The (Finite) Haunt of Horror Mags thread

10 posts in this topic

Welcome to the finite 5 issue run of “The Haunt of Horror”. I know there were 2 digests but will cover them later.

The first issue sports a neat Bob Larkin werewolf cover. This title started out rather generic until issue # 2 that started Gabriel the Devil Hunter and Satana the Devil’s Daughter.

Issue # 2 has a nice Earl Norem cover that sets the mood for this series. Intro Gabriel and Satana, two occult figures that Marvel figured might pay off due to the overwhelming success of the movie “The Exorcist”.

The title page has a nice Pablo Marcos Gabriel to start off the issue.

Gabriel looks as if he is a blend of Father Damien Karras and Nick Fury and fights/exorcizes demons from issue to issue in the vein of the movie.

Satana (originally to be drawn by Estaban Maroto had been replaced by Enrique Badia Romero who does quite nicely and draws some great artwork) also begins here.

Issue # 3 has a great cover by JAD but the issue itself is just decent at best story wise. Marvel again really seemed to be banking on the “Exorcist” fan base as these issues covered the movie with their “Exorcist Tapes” pictorial and interview section.

The back cover has yet another nice Satana by Pablo Marcos.

Issue # 4 with an intense Bob Larkin cover depicting (what else) an exorcism!

Some more of Romero’s art on Satana.

This was a surprise!

I tried to piece this inside front and back cover pin-up by Neal Adams best I could.

Issue # 5’s cover I thought at first was a Neal Adam’s turned out to be rendered by Giordano.

Another Marcos’ splash (inside front cover).

This final issue seemed to try to deal with racial issues as in Gabriel’s story where he helps a black woman deal with her demon possessed child. The dialogue gets harsh at times but maybe for the reason a demon is saying it, it is OK’ed by the publisher.

The back cover leads us to believe issue # 6 will be coming our way with the following teasers but alas ‘tis not to be.

Here’s the first of the two digests that actually came out a year (1973) before the magazine. I started with the mags though since it is the appropriate thread. The first issue has a really nice Gray Morrow cover.

As one would assume, the inside contains text stories accompanied by spot illustrations. As you can tell from the list of authors on the cover the book includes stories by Harlan Ellison and Robert E. Howard. The spot illus. inside included some unidentified art and some nice surprises as in the following examples:

Brunner

BWS (?) Just guessing here

Ploog

As for the second issue I’m afraid I don’t possess one. mad.gif So until a copy comes my way or someone could post a copy for review we will have to wait… sorry.gif
