ASM 151 - 9.2?

Just purchased as a 9.2. Spine is nearly flawless. Thumb crease and small tear on right edge Is this acceptable in a 9.2?

Well, I like to audit myself once in a while to make sure I'm not getting too strict.

 

What grade do you think it is?

You would need pretty big thumbs to leave a thumb crease that long...

 

With the crease and the tear I'd have to say 7.5/8.0 range, tops. I could see 8.5 if the crease were much smaller, but it looks pretty significant.

I've lived this post. I've tried a few times now to get a nice 9.2/9.4 151, and thus far the best I've managed is a strong 8.5/weak 9.0.

I paid guide for a 9.2. Obviously, it's going back.

 

When I pulled it out of the box I was thrilled for about 15 seconds... spine is nearly perfect, good corners... I'm thinking it may have been undergraded and possibly a 9.4.

 

Then I saw the right edge.

Yep, I sure know that sinking feeling you describe. I guess we all do!

We sure do. I would say 7.5 at best. I can't see it going 8.0 with a major defect like that.

Thanks for posting this book Zipper. It is representive of several books that I have that are 9.4 ish, but with one area of defect way out of character with that grade, such as a tear, fold, etc.

I tend to grade those books as 7.5....this thread sort of confirms that thinking

Yup... I would have personally graded it a 7.5 / 8.0. And if that's what I wanted, I could get one of those on ebay for $10 - $15.
