To Be A Gerber "9" Or Not To Be, That Is The Question!

116 posts in this topic

Ken,

Nice tribute to Gerber, but something about this line just doesn't sound right...

I explained to him that it was his PJs that prompted me

Didn't Bruce Wayne say the same thing about Grayson?

Ya know... Carey made an off-handed remark about some intimate knowledge of YOUR PJs, but I never brought THAT up before! That's for calling me out, Richard... :baiting:

Are you saying you have a problem with Mariah and I? (shrug)

She liked my PJs (for the short time I was wearing them).

i heard she put madeline kahn to shame when she hit that note on "sweet mystery of life, at last i've FOUND YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU."

Nice Jumbos; I agree probably not a Gerber 9 but if everyone on these boards posts their copy we can get a better idea if it's a Gerber 7 (my opinion) or rates as perhaps an 8. I know Ronaldo has one too, right Steve!!!

Here's another one:

100_4073.jpg

This copy I purchased from Ronaldo who bought it from the boardie in question who had several copies. One was coverless and he sold a 2.0 on eBay last year.

When I was debating whether or not to buy this one, I did a mental calculation of all the Jumbo 31s I figured existed:

1. JJBEE's coverless

2. JJBEE's 2.0

3. Mine (nee Ronaldo's)

4. Mile High?

5. Detroit Trolley

6. Bangzoom?

7. Brian Peets

and now:

8. Esquire

9. Sacentaur

(unless one of those two is the Detroit Trolley.)

So by my calculations, if I can find 9, there has to be quite a few others out there.

Great detective work Seank, this is what we need here.

I remember JJBEE's coverless copy (it's slabbed by the way, I was once interested in purchasing his copy), but I don't really count coverless books since to me they are incomplete, and I think only complete copies should count in a census.

It would be interesting to see how many we could count.

Jumbo 31 is a very cool book, but not a "9" IMHO (a Boardie had 3 or 4 copies last year, IIRC).

Oh by the way, JJBEE has the coverless copy only now. He sold all the other copies he had (at least when I was going for his © copy that's what he had left (about 6 months ago).

P.S.- Is there a Rockford copy of this book??? Anyone know!!!

I believe mine is JJBEE's 2.0, unless he has another one.

I believe you're right. So that puts us at:

1. JJBEE's coverless

2. Esquire's (nee JJBEE's 2.0) (unrestored IIRC)

3. Mine (nee Ronaldo's) (PGX 5.5, now cracked, minor color touch per PGX, I can't find it)

4. Mile High? (presumed to exist, I haven't researched)

5. Sacentaur's (nee Detroit Trolley)

6. Bangzoom? (presumed to exist and I'm sure it's a 9.6 beauty with florescent pages)

7. Brian Peets (he says Fine, so probably 7.0)

There's a 4.0 in the census that I don't think is any of the above, so:

8. Mystery 4.0

The PGX census accounts for 1, 2, and 3. Any others?

Actually I believe my copy is slight restoration (tape, spine seals).

Flying Donut is a big Jumbo collector.

(tsk) It isn't nice to comment on a fellow collector's girth.

There was a destroyed one on eBay last year, and the same Finnish seller that had the Fight 31 had a Jumbo 31 earlier this year. Its tough, but not a 9.

Here's one tho, that I think people have missed - the "giveaway" version of WDCS 4, that Overstreet says only has 5 copies. I think that number might be about right.

What about pedigree copies??

I have a MH list but it's only the CGC'd copies, and it's not on the list.

Also have a Reilly list but it's incomplete and has no Jumbo's on it.

Rick is sending me the Lost Valley list, so I'll see if it's on that list.

Anyone else have any lists they could check. It's a start!!!

By the way if you check the scan on GCD you'll see the copy listed is Mark's copy with a little added artwork to the cover. Check it out!!!

edit: Wrong about that it is NOT mark's copy.

Just picked this up recently. Thank you very much to forum member DarrenSmith for alerting me to the sale!!!! (thumbs u :applause:

This is a really interesting "book". It is, actually, a wealth of treasure 1 1/2" thick, so to speak, of 16 comics bound together in a 1948 hardback book version.

Listed as "rare" by Overstreet and a Gerber "9".

Anyone else have a copy or know of any for sale?

Never seen this book before!!! Hardback version??? The comics bound together don't have covers of any kind, or is this like the St. John 100 pagers, just bigger???

Also would like to see more cover scans if anybody else has a copy!!!

Inquiring minds want to know!!!! hm
