Zap comics?

9 posts in this topic

I ran across a Zap Comics #3 today and thought it was cool. When I came home, I took a look in my Overstreet but didn't see it anywhere in the price guide although there is a picture of Zap Comics #1 on page 307 in the Modern Age introduction. Though that was odd... There are books on eBay but is there anyone out there who can give me an idea about them?

Why does Overstreet mention them in the preamble to the price guide but not list them in the price guide? Are they listed somewhere else?

Because they have what some people call pornographic images in them, Overstreet does not list them.

Undergrounds are very complicated to guide as well. There are miniscule differences between printings of some books (eg. Zap 0 1st & 2nd printings) and the records of some print runs have been lost. One thing's for sure, they're fun to collect!! goodevil.gif

There is a squarebound J Kennedy Underground Comix Pr Guide that came out late 70s. The 2nd edition of Jerry Weist's Comic Bk Original Art Pr Guide also has an updated section on undergrounds but is not as complete as the J Kennedy book. UGs contained tall tales of sex, drugs & avoiding the police.

The J Kennedy guide is now a collector's item itself commanding a nice chunk of change.

The folks at Hippy Comix are putting together a new underground comix price guide as well.

We've pictured that ZAP in the Modern Age intro for historic purposes to accompany its mention in the piece, but Bob has never listed undergrounds in the Guide section itself.

As odin88 points out, the best source to determine printing variations for underground comics like Zap Comix is the New Wave and Underground Price Guide by Jay Kennedy. They pop on ebay from time to time, and might run you between US 35-65 depending on condition.

The importance of determining printing variations is to establish whether you want to just collect for reading purposes, or for investment purposes. First printings are worth a lot more than later printings. Being informed about how to distinguish printing variations will protect you from the opportunitistic dealer or collector who automatically labels every underground a "first printing."

If you ever need any advise, feel free to PM me.

BTW: a first printing Zap Comix #3 in NM shape can be worth several hundred dollars.
