Seth Green & Hugh Sterbakov Freshmen Signing at Atomic Comics!

Popular Duo Appear at Mainstay Arizona Chain on December 13th!

November 27, 2006

For additional information:

Jim McLauchlin, 310-477-8882

Seth Green (Family Guy, Robot Chicken) and Hugh Sterbakov (Freshmen, Robot Chicken) will be appearing at Atomic Comics Chandler Fashion Center on Wednesday, December 13th 2006 from 5PM to 7:30PM. The popular duo will be appearing at the legendary comic book retail chain to promote the release of their new series Freshmen II, which Green and Sterbakov co-created together. The event will coincide with the release of Freshmen II #2, which will debut in comic shops across the country that day.

Freshmen II continues the story begun in the original Freshmen mini-series published by Top Cow Productions Inc. in 2005. Cast out of the main dorms and forced to live in temporary housing in the Boughl Science Building, 14 members of the freshmen class of Freese College have been imbued with miraculous superpowers by the explosion of a mysterious device called the Ax-Cell-Erator! Now, the second series picks up where the first left off and is back with an all-new adventure that will quickly teach the Freshmen what's at stake when you put on a costume! Wannabe, the powerless team leader who has always dreamed of being a superhero, is having visions of the eccentric Mr. Fiddlesticks, a character from a series of childrens' books. But what does it mean? Is Mr. Fiddlesticks warning Norrin of danger, or bringing it himself? Freshmen is an uproarious combination of superpowers and college…with a talking beaver!

Atomic Comics, the World's Greatest Comic Superstores, is a four store chain in Arizona. Atomic is a leader in the retail comic industry, well known for its innovative events and high profile signings over the course of its 20+ year history. Fans and industry followers may recall Atomic Comics was hit hard last month when a young couple drove their car through the front window of the chain's flagship location, the Mesa Superstore. The damage was greatly increased due to the car hitting a water main in the shopping complex, which dumped several 100,000 gallons of water into the comic store. Owner, Mike Malve, and his dedicated staff are working diligently with their insurance company to inventory the damage and hope to re-open a revamped and improved Mesa Superstore in mid-December. The Green and Sterbakov signing, originally planned to take place at the Mesa store, was quickly moved to the Chandler location.

“Atomic Comics has been a vocal supporter of Freshmen since the beginning of our first series, and we're thrilled to finally get our rumps out there to support them in turn”, said co-creator and writer, Hugh Sterbakov, “We really enjoy checking out comic stores run by folks who love comics, and nobody loves comics more than Mike Malve and his crew at Atomic”.

“Freshmen is a very personal project for Hugh and me. We love the opportunity to meet fans face-to-face and share in their personal experience”, added an excited Seth Green, “We're coming to Arizona, we've got wrist braces and a whole sack of Sharpies”!

“We're very fortunate we have four stores and are able to pick up an event like this and relocate. It's been a crazy time, but it's been fairly easy with Seth, Hugh, and Top Cow being so accommodating and willing to change up details on the fly. We've hosted some of the biggest talent in comics in our 20-plus years and we expect this to be one of our best events yet”, commented Mike Malve, owner of Atomic Comics.

Copies of Freshmen Vol 1 TP, Freshmen II #1, and Freshmen II #2 will be available for purchase at the signing. For additional details on the signing and directions to the Chandler location as well as an interview with Green and Sterbakov, fans can go to www.atomiccomics.com. The official Freshmen comic website is www.freshmencomic.com and additional information on the series can be found at www.topcow.com. Freshmen #1 is currently available for free at www.drunkduck.com/Freshmen.

Steve,

Is this just a press release you are forwarding? If so,there should be a mechanism so it doesn't appear to be from you.

Whats the Hero Iniatiative have to do with this?Is it a charity signing, because that is not mentioned anywhere.

I posted this because, not only is it a "comic event", but because Mike is a great guy and does a lot for the H.I. as well as other things for our hobby and is going through a financially hard time at the moment as stated in the post:

He is also getting a real hard time from his insurance company as they do not understand that books with mold will not sell for the same price as books without mold. makepoint.gif

As to the posting, I could have another posting name such as Hero Initiative when posting for charity and such, but some forum members might have a problem with it as I would be a "shill" confused.gif. Maybe the boards could vote on it........

Isn't mold a health hazard too? What an insurance company...

Because the President of an unbiased third party grading company shouldn't be picking and choosing which events it promotes.Kind of gives the impression its not exactly unbiased. I can understand promting charity events, but nowhere in the press release is there any mention of this being a charity event.

I completely disagree. I think the President of an unbiased third party grading company can pick and choose whatever events he wants so long as it has nothing to with THIRD PARTY GRADING. CGC won't be at this event. CGC is not mentioned in this release.

Certainly Steve is a figure in the comics community beyond Third Party Grading, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Hero Initiative he posts items related to the Hero Initiative, and he acts, with the permision of the company, in promoting that worthy charity because it doesn't have anything directly to do with 3rd party grading. Even though this release came from the head of that charity, this is not a charity related item.

No, what's happening here is that Steve Borock, member of the comics community, relayed information to the forum community that had not been previously posted that might be of interest to this community.

Well,Kev. You are entitled to your opinion, and I'll keep mine.

When I see the head of a charity, one which I support strongly, issueing a press release for an event,it gives me the impression that it is related to his charity, hence something I would be very interested in.

I hope Jim and Steve don't start promoting every little event that comes along,as it will dilute the effectiveness of the HI events, imo.

You disagree. Thats fine. thumbsup2.gif

Actually, Jim McLauchlin is not only the head of the Hero Initiative, but he's also the current editor-in-chief of Platinum Studios, and the former EIC of Top Cow, and a former employee of Wizard. He maintains a role as an advisor to Top Cow, and he writes articles for non-comics related publications. Seth Green and Hugh Sterbakov produce a comic book called Freshmen for Top Cow that he developed for Top Cow when he was EIC.

Jim sends out a lot of press releases not related to the Hero Initiative via his e-mail account, while the Hero Initiative press releases come directly from the Hero Initiative (contact person Janine Bielski), not Jim.
