I'm thinking the accumulation of defects (Most notably the upper right front corner and the various spine ticks on the back) means it can't go higher than 9.0

I think you're right. Soft URC, and just a bit of spine wear visible on the back. 8.5/9.0 range, leaning 9.0.

Ditto. The stress line on the back is a little large for a 9.0 in light of the URC of the front cover, but it has a shot.
