Back in the day,I bought comics off spinner racks...it was tough to find nice copy.

 

Ditto - they were treated with contempt by most newsagents in North London back in 1972 / 1973, when I first started getting into U.S. comics. All dogeared even before you took 'em to the counter...

It could be difficult to find decent condition copies here too, not that to start with I was terribly obsessive about that. As well as storing comics in racks, the bus station newsagent was also exposed to the elements and so the books could occasionally get slightly dampened, especially if they had been held over for another month rather than returned unsold.

 

When I started collecting properly, became grade conscious and discovered other sources, not too surprising that I stopped going there.

There are still some LCS using them that can't understand why I don't buy.
