CGC Census Numbers - Anything, Everything, what do YOU want to know?

182 posts in this topic

Well... my degree in computer science (and my patience this weekend)

has finally paid off!

No, not in my "real job"... but right here in my hobby!

I now have the current CGC census numbers downloaded from the website.

Since I've just been given permission by Steve Borock to share these numbers,

my question to you is... what do you want to know?

Let's start with the basics (CGC census, 7/17/2003 release):

Comic books (issues) in the database: 37,382

CGC graded comic books in the census: 325,389

Universal CGC grades in the census: 310,197

CGC Universal grade breakdown:

10.0 -- 331

9.9 -- 1,641

9.8 -- 43,882

9.6 -- 62,153

9.4 -- 50,180

9.2 -- 31,211

9.0 -- 25,067

8.5 -- 18,858

8.0 -- 16,503

...

1.0 -- 282

0.5 -- 337

Ok, so who's first? grin.gif

EXCELLENT!!!

Feel like sharing how you captured it? I never thought about doing it by scraping the site; I figured I'd ask Architect to run a query to a spreadsheet if I really wanted it. How long does your program take to get all the data?

Anyway, things I can think of that would be interesting include (20 data points or so would be minimum to be included in these results):

- Comics most frequently restored

- Top 50 submitted comics grouped by age (most submitted Silver book, Bronze book, etc)

- Top 10 titles with the highest average grades grouped by age (highest-grading Silver, Bronze, etc)

- More as they occur to me smile.gif

I assume you have this data in a database...I could help with the SQL if you need it, although if you wrote the page-scraping code, I doubt you need the help.

Ahhh... an assignment. smile.gif

Well, it will take a little while to get some of these answers...

(especially since I'm currently sitting at my desk at work at 5pm)

but I'll get to them ASAP.

I'm sure that there's a much easier way to compile all the data

than my "one page at a time" reader. It's automated, but very slow...

which is why it took all weekend.

The results, however, were definitely worth waiting for.

- Comics most frequently restored

COMICS MOST FREQUENTLY RESTORED:

Amazing Spider-Man 1=159

Amazing Fantasy 15=156

X-Men 94=129

X-Men 1=125

Fantastic Four 1=101

Daredevil 1 =84

Amazing Spider-Man 14=74

- Top 10 titles with the highest average grades grouped by age (highest-grading Silver, Bronze, etc)

What do you think should be the minimum number of books graded (cut-off)?

WOW! VERY interesting list! It initially surprised me that there wasn't any Golden Age on there, and then I realized it's because the total submission counts are so low.

How about most restored comics as a percentage of total submitted assuming a minimum of 20 submissions? I assume Golden Age would rise to the top of that heap.

What do you think should be the minimum number of books graded (cut-off)?

I dunno...maybe 20, 25, or 50, not sure which one of those.

No Golden Age and no DC. That's kind of intereting! It would be interesting to see the top number of DC restored.

Wait, I just realized you don't have any way to associate titles with ages (Silver, Bronze, etc) unless you have another table that does it for you, which is something you wouldn't have gotten from the web site. Ah well. If I come across a table containing titles with an accompanying field for age I'll let you know. smile.gif

It's interesting how the lists are driven by value. The books with the most value are at the top. Not that I expected anything much else. What would be the point of submitting a book that would have no value, other than novelty.
