CGC Census Numbers - Anything, Everything, what do YOU want to know?

182 posts in this topic

Amazingly great stuff here!!!

I noticed from your publisher's breakdown that Archie Publications has ONLY 236 unique issues slabbed by CGC. What is the total number of Archie Publication books which have been graded by CGC? I noticed that your list stops at 515 copies with DC/Wildstorm. I assume this means that Archie Publications must be lower than this number. This appears to be an awfully low number for a major publisher which has been around continuously since the 1940's.

Would you have a breakdown by decade and the number of copies which grade CGC 9.0 and higher? Any bets this is an extremely low number which goes to show that Archies are probably quite tough to find in high grade and probably quite undervalued in the marketplace.

Thanks for any help which you can provide. smile.gif

Valiantman you rule!!! Ive got a question: tell us a little about how you went about this. It seems you wrote a program that went into every book on the CGC census an dextracted all the grade info into a spreadsheet. And from there it was fairly easy (for a genius!) to sort it out into any query you want.

But did you really crunch the info one screen at a time as I guessed?

Well, I borrowed some code from some software developer friends

that's used to gather data from websites and adjusted it to work for CGC.

(It's normally used to mine public records like marriages, court records, etc.)

It runs from the command line (yep, it runs from DOS)... and opens

the connection to the website like a browser, but instead of displaying the results

it reads them one line at a time. I strip off all the html tags and create a

delimited record for myself. It's not a perfect format for every record,

so I made several adjustments in Microsoft Access to correct the problems.

Yes, it literally reads the pages one at a time.

They take about 5 seconds each... and I split the work into 3 screens,

so I am able to read about 2,000 pages per hour.

about 18 hours later... all 37,000+ are done!

Obviously, this is not as easy as just downloading a copy of the database file,

but since that doesn't seem to be an option at this point...I'm pretty happy with the results!

It's inteseting how there have been more higher graded submissions of DC Comics over Marvel Comics from the 1960's.

As Drbanner said, only in the early 1960's. This makes perfect sense because FF#1 doesn't come out until 1961, and the majority of the Marvel Super-Heroes aren't around till at least 1963. Once the "Marvel Universe" began, there is no question that there are many more high grade copies from Marvel than DC.

What I thought was VERY INTERESTING, is that it appears that around 1/3 of all books graded so far are MODERNS.

I think that is a bad trend for CGC in the future. In my opinion, there is no real financial benefit to getting most MODERNS slabbed. As time goes on, and the census shows thousands of copies of a Modern book being slabbed, prices will contiune to fall. Then even getting a 9.8 or above will not justify the cost of getting the book slabbed.

Then again, once we run out of high grade vintage books to slab, what's left for cgc to do?? Moderns have to be part of model. They just need to drop the submission fees! smile.gif

Valiantman, a well deserved five stars. However, you seem to be stuck on three stars still! Hopefully the next fiver will push you over the top. sumo.gif

What is the total number of Archie Publication books which have been graded by CGC?

236 unique issues are credited to "Archie Publications", totalling 410 submissions.

(401 universal submissions)

There are also 15 issues of "Archie" titles credited to MLJ Magazines,

with 30 submissions (26 universal submissions)

Books that aren't published by "Archie Publications" and don't have "Archie"

in the title aren't included. (Pep, etc.)

Would you have a breakdown by decade and the number of copies which grade CGC 9.0 and higher?

For Archie books?

These include all "Archie Publications" and any

MLJ Magazines comic with "Archie" in the title.

(Also includes 3 "Bell Comics" Canadian issues)

1940s - 23 Archie issues - 42 universals, 5 graded CGC 9.0 or higher

1950s - 65 Archie issues - 102 universals, 23 graded CGC 9.0 or higher

1960s - 99 Archie issues - 144 universals, 88 graded CGC 9.0 or higher

1970s - 20 Archie issues - 67 universals, 59 graded CGC 9.0 or higher

1980s - 26 Archie issues - 27 universals, 26 graded CGC 9.0 or higher

1990s - 21 Archie issues - 51 universals, 48 graded CGC 9.0 or higher

2000s - 2 Archie issues - 2 universals, 2 graded CGC 9.0 or higher

But how far can they drop the fees and still make it worthwhile (profitable) to grade these Modern books?

And as I said before, once there are 100-1,000's of 9.8 copies of the same issue, will there be enough premium to justify the grading cost?

Could you look up which publishers had the least submits. Say less than 30. Thanks again. smile.gif

162 different publishers have only 1 submission.

476 different publishers have 30 submissions or less.

I actually had a similar conversation with Steve about this at the Philly Forum Dinner and basically what he said (which I agree with) is that ther is always going to be a "hot" book that people will want to get slabbed. I predict that since Teen Titans sold out in like a day, that in 4 weeks that will be all over ebay in 9.6/9.8 thanks to prescreens. I'm sure that Steve and the boys have also seen more copies of Trouble in the last week than they ever wanted to . . .

Point being - as long as there are "hot" books people will want the stuff certified. After all, when they started this gig everyone was aware of the finite supply of BA/SA/GA books.

Thoughts?

I tend to believe that huge certifications of "HOT BOOKS" will invariably cut down the number of "HOT BOOKS" and the legnth of time a book is hot.

Thereby, disproving the old saying "Better Late Than Never". Eventually, if you send in a hot book two weeks after it came out, by the time you get the book back it won'tt be "Hot" anymore (regardless of the grade).

While I am in no way saying CGC won't be around for many years to come, there is no guarantee that they will contiunue to get as many books submitted as they do now.

ValiantMan- Is it possible for you to run a report showing:

1) Total Marvel Books graded from 1966-1975

2) Of the total amount of books graded, how many are VF+ (8.5) or better and how many are VF (8.0) or lower.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I ask this question because:

Other than a few key issues during this time, it almost makes no financial sense to have books grade VF or lower during this time period. I have a feeling that everyone will be surprised how many books were certified that never should have been (from a financial point of view). And as time goes on, people will realize "more and more" which books should be certified and which books shouldn't.

Thanks, that was fast.

I hope you're not that fast with your wife? Of course it might explain why you have time to run these reports. Just Kidding. 27_laughing.gif

This kind of proved my point that probably over 1/4 of Marvel books from the time period of 1966-1975 should never have been graded in the first place. And the truth is that probably most VF/NM or lower books from 1968 on should not have been graded.

I just think that over time, collectors will realize that it doesn't make a lot of sense to pay $25 (or more) to get many of these books graded.
