Investment Question.

8 posts in this topic

The nostalgia factor has been a big factor in the increase of art prices over the last few years so in general I would say that investing in published pages would be the way to go. The good thing about published pieces is that there is usually a track record of what other pages from a particular issue or run have gone for in the past (although the desirability of one page to another differs).

If a commission or unpublished piece is a spectacular image, it can also be a good investment, but typically only the creme of the crop rise to the top. If an artist can always make more, that will keep the price down to the level that the artist is charging for a commission.

When u say original character art, do u mean original newspaper strip daily or Sunday art? Syndicated originals are generally more expensive upfront because more people read them in the USA or Canada.

The key is to buy what u like, not what others are hyping. If u like the art, someone else will too in the future when u sell -- assuming u have "good taste." cool.gif

Buy the covers of everything, and select artists doing the character starring, like batman, spidey, etc. in the page and not just a filler page. Alot of times you can buy from the artists at shows. that's the coolest. Don't forget to protect them though too - alot of people have for instance the single greatest collection of spider-man original art pages from Romita and didn't protect them for the longest time. Risky if you ask me. And all the Jonah Hex art too
