Odd back cover "shading"

4 posts in this topic

I recently bought this comic from Polyphemus in one of his DC Superpacks and was very happy to find the condition of the book. Two of the three had odd shading on their back covers which I have never seen. They seem more white on the outside edge of the books than they do on the inside. Here is one of them...

Has anyone seen anthing like this before? I think that it's odd that the outside is very very white while the inside has some tanning. How do you think it will affect a grade from CGC?

I know you'll need to see the front cover to decide on a grade so here it is...

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

And, if you're interested in books in probably similar condition, here's the thread where he listed his Superpacks...

It's called a "halo" or "transfer stain". I've never heard the exact science behind it, but rationale would lead me to think that it's due to transfer of the inks from the pages to the cover. You see it a lot with Atlas books.

I had 4 of those once that were all no less than 9.4. I have no idea where they are now. frown.gif

More specifically, it's the transfer of the oil from the ink on the interior page to the cover. When books are subjected to frequent changes in humidity, it alters the viscosity of the oil in the ink and causes it to seep into the cover. Tracey Heft taught me all that.
