Newstand vs Direct cover differences

I don't recall noticing a difference between direct and newstand issues like this before. The direct cover completely loses the UPC box, and also there's a change in the price bullet at the top right.

The US price only on the newstand version suggest that this version wasn't sold outside the US. The direct version probably had broader distribution because it has US, UK, and Canadian prices.

Is this variation between the two versions typical? Is it also the rule that newstand versions are typically distributed in the US only, and direct editions are sold both inside/outside the US?

Yes, in the mid 80s, there were 3 versions of most Marvels and DCs. Direct Market, Newsstand, and Canadian Newsstand. Eventually it became just Direct and Newsstand, which are almost identical (in most cases) except for the differences in the UPC box.
