Here is a unique comic/game store problem...

57 posts in this topic

Back when I had my store in the early 80s,my comics would arrive on Saturdays, after my store was already open for business. With several people already waiting for the new books, there simply was no way to check each book for content before putting them out.Quite a few books got out that never should have.

Thankfully, the distributors soon switched to air-frieght and my books started arriving late Thursdays, letting me scan them before opening on Friday.

1st - In regards to the crazy lady giving you grief; As a business owner you may refuse to allow anyone you don't want to serve in to your establishment. It's your business, so kindly ask her to leave the moment she comes in next time. She has no right to be in a privately owned place of business.

2nd - In regards to the issue of nudity in comics; I agree that comics that depict sexual activities should not be sold without strictly adhered to guidelines. No one under 18, bagged, separated from the other comics, prominent signage stating policies, etc. However - a naked breast does not constitute pornography or obscenity. If people are going to freak out over an exposed breast or nipple, then how would they react to a visit to an art museum? It's an odd and unfortunate paradox that no one seems to get upset at a comic full of head splattering gun play and gore, but if a woman shows a naked breast the hammer of the religious conservatives comes crashing down. Baffling...

Thanks guys for the input! My brother is definitely going with Moondog's advice that communication is key. He is putting up a RPG Q&A flyer from the Game Manufacturers Association linky , and will be keeping a closer eye on the comics/TPBs. He also is having lunch with his lawyer today - wonder who will pick up the check? 893scratchchin-thumb.gifgrin.gif

He is also planning on doing some community-oriented things too, such as sponsoring a Little League team and maybe doing some area clean-up. Many of his loyal customers want to volunteer thumbsup2.gif

She needs a kick in the....

These people need to realize that these games and novels are all fiction and make belive. Evil is in peoples mind not in these games and books. Do they influence peoples thinking maybe but so do a lot of other stuff. Even the bible has passages about people doing evil.

You would think someone so educated would be more open minded. For a laugh tell your brother to give her a free copy of the new Goon book insane.gif

Back in the 80's and 90's the independents were terrible about featuring nudity on a consistent basis. Books that never had bare breasts would suddenly have a nude scene. We couldn't trust any of them. The last thing you want to have happen is a mom checks her 12-year-olds books and sees bare breasts in what appears to be a harmless title. Take the time to make sure you don't get sub-marined.

Yep, my friend who owned an LCS had to go through that because he really had a family shop. mothers would come in with their 10 year olds and baby sibling in a stroller. one issue of savage dragon with a shower sex scene really ticked him off and he had to pull all of them off the rack. even located on one of the most liberal neighborhoods in the country, the upper west side in manhattan, there would definitely be a mother or ten (or father) who would find this highly inappropriate and he'd be out a customer. not worth it.

As for your wack job psychologist, why not report her to the licensing authorities? she is exhibiting some bizarre behavior.

Tell your brother to star wearing his "I love Satan" shirt again.

"Cthulhu lives"! headbang.gifgrin.gif

Actually, I have a shirt around here I was given at a game convention that has the Pimp Slap card on it from a game called Lunch Money. The card has a cute little girl on it on a playground, and she says "Jesus hates you, and so do I." grin.gif

Drice:

Your brother can't go wrong by getting involved in the community. I sponsored little league teams and soccer teams (and always had free comics for the players at the end of the season pizza party). Just showing that you're a good citizen can asuage some nervousness that may exist withing the community.

Good luck!

Oh, come to find out she is a local child psychiatrist.

What do you think? confused-smiley-013.gif

Long lost descendant of Wertham? confused-smiley-013.gifpoke2.gif Sorry to hear this. i hope this doesn't go the same way that case in Texas went with the comic shop owner there accused of peddling "risque" material/pornography to minors and specifically targetting them.

seems like this person thinks D&D is satanic, she's not after the risque stuff, maybe.

not much law enforcement can/will do about D&D. it's silly, sure, there's "magic", which these types consider satanic and what not, but don't they know that D&D, at least the D&D I used to play in about 1979, involved good (the players) slaughtering "evil"

Does she go into the local Blockbuster muttering "evil" every time she passes the Harry Potter display?

Well, anyway, it seems like your bro will need to double check everything in the store, no potential porn for the kiddies and what not. as moondog and others, it's a good thing to do anyway.
