My Top 50

Reboot of an earlier journal....

After years of trying to collect every comic I could find, I once owned 100,000 comics (most of them almost worthless).  By selling, trading, and buying; I transformed my collection to just 50 comics.  I previously created a journal picturing those 50 comics.  Late last year I parted with half of my books to buy a childhood grail of mine.  I have slowly been adding comics to get back to 50.  I tried to edit my last journal, but I was unable to change my initial 50 entries.  So, I have decided to start fresh with a new journal.  I will update the list when new comics arrive, as well as explain why I got the book and/or kicked out the old ones.  This serves for a digital library for me to enjoy my books while they sit in safe storage.  It is mostly for my entertainment, but feel free to comment if you wish!

#26  No collection can be complete without a classic  "Underground" comic. I am not a fan of Crumb, so I went with a rare comic with a cool 1st appearance.  Welcome in Cherry Poptart!

#27  This is a weird one for me. I love the early Spectre covers, except for this one. I'm glad it's labeled a "Classic Cover", but I find most of the other ones from this era better.

#28  I am not a huge fan of Syd Shores, but this is my favorite of his covers.  I like that it has a Stan Lee story!

#30  Variant comics are not my thing!  Having said that, I think Bronze Age price variants are pretty cool. This is the only 9.8!

#32   I have had other cool Romance Comics, but this is the one I didn't want to part with.  Not quite a classic cover, but very appealing.

#34  The "I am Curious Black" cover.  This book was hard to find in high grade!  I always thought I get a 9.6+ copy, but the market has surpassed the price I was willing to pay.

#38  This is my oldest CGC book. It is not a standard pulp, not a comic, not a magazine. It is comic book sized and very cool. It was added to my Top 50, because I don't have anything better.

#40  I really only wanted one price variant in my collection, so this will eventually be move on. I think it is the single highest graded.

#41  This was the 1st "back issue" I ever owned.  I traded for it in 1975 at the age of 10 (obviously not this copy). I have always wanted a 9.8, but I haven't found one that looked as good as this one.  I will keep looking!  By the way, this is also my favorite Silver Age Daredevil cover.

#43  I wanted to include one Stan Lee Signature Series book in my collection.  Instead of a key issue, I went with something a little more obscure. I am very happy with this one. It is the only Copper Age book that I own.

#44 This was one of the 1st comics I ever owned. I am not sure how I got it, but I have vague memories of it being sold at my elementary school in Foster City California. It seems like it was offered with other kid's magazines such as Dynamite. I couldn't resist when I had a chance to buy the best copy out there!

#46  The adding of a Promise Collection comic was a must!  I had my eye on about 100 candidates.  This was not one of them.  Prices were just too high for me to get a high grade mainstream Timely or DC issue.  I changed my approach and bid on anything I thought was both cool and priced fairly.  Still I had no luck.  In the long run, I settled for buying a nice book at 1.5 times the price I thought  was fair. Oh well, at least I have one.

#47  Bronze Age Neal Adams' covers are the best!  When it came down to choosing between this one and #251, I just couldn't let either go.  So, I kept them both.

#48  I bought this one because I thought the book was undervalued.  Someday, I hope to see this one get labeled as a Classic Batgirl Cover.  I had intentions of buying up all the high grade copies I could find.  Then, somebody spent over $15,000.00 on a 9.8 copy.   It is no longer underappreciated.

#50  When I first started buying CGC comics, I built an entire run of ASM. Sadly, this is the only one that I kept.  I really wish I still had my 7.0 copy of #1 and my 4.0 copy of Amazing Fantasy #15!
