  1. I'm going to yield my rights to the ASM 23 to LordRahl.
  2. yes, there's a beautiful 5.0 with no marvel chipping listed on greg reece's site for $44k that I'm sure could go around $40k. There's a 5.0 with slight marvel chipping on bob's site that could go around 40 or a little less. A 4.5 sig series on ebay, with a best offer and no real bites it looks like at $44k. Great for the consignor that it sold for that price, but not a market barometer really. Who knows what drove it, but I think it would be very very difficult to replicate given how many copies are available.
  3. the extra white didn't bother me at all. the image was awesome on that splash.
  4. You're probably right that it will look better in a few years -- but I think the other side of that is that multiple dealers bid in HA and if it were 30% off I'd have assumed a little more bidding. But -- I did want it as a collector and did think of continuing to push it, but then I guess I also didn't feel the need for 24 pages from this book and owning a complete book didn't have the same allure for me as I thought it might. Then again, I'm sure if I hadn't already won something I'd have been pushing harder on that complete book for sure. If I had gotten it at 45 or even 50 I probably would have been satisfied as a collector.
  5. It's not a question of whether you could make money on it, it's when and how much. I'm stating that I personally didn't want to put 45 or 50 in to win it and then have to break up the book sell it etc. I just don't see it as all that great to do that.
  6. There's no doubt they will make money on it for sure, but I think it's investing $40k and then what's the return, I mean it could be huge upside but I'm not sure when and for how much. I did not want to push up from where it was around 40k or so... I actually liked a couple of those panel pages quite a bit.
  7. I should be clear. I love Murphy Anderson work. I'd buy up more Hawkman pages, but I don't love it enough to pay numbers that are huge. A dealer likely bought it to break it up, and there were some spectacular pages. But does someone want to pay $15 or $20k for a good splash now when you could have had the other 23 pages for another $20k. I don't know, but I feel like if you were a serious Murphy fan you saw this, considered it, passed on it. I do think he's a great artist and one of my faves. There's just too much Hawkman around though.
  8. I bid on the Anderson Hawkman stuff as well, but the estate has let a glut out on to the market over the years I feel. I thought there were some great pages in the 24 page complete story, but really am not interested enough in Hawkman period at those prices. I got one page from a dealer and feel satisfied I won't be buying anymore Murphy Anderson Hawkman stuff unless at lower end prices. I'm guessing some folks felt similar to me on those pieces. The SA cover was sort of meh. Things that don't have known characters or by classic artists don't seem to fetch the same level. To me those covers were sort of meh, and DC sci fi just doesn't have the same following of folks clamoring to buy it.
  9. I went very strong for that page but lost, did not want to cross over $20k all in to get that page. The problem is that there are so many other things you can buy for $20k which have better visual images or full on splashes or covers. the power and dynamics of the piece are what drew me I just couldn't go to that final bid or two.
  10. Well -- the challenge of DCs is finding them in grade and/or with page quality. So the desirability around BB 28 or show 22 is finding the depth of the color strike, nice PQ and the technical grade structure. I'd wager to say that a really nice looking Show 22 in 9.2 or the 9.4 would go bonkers. I agree with your assessment, 9.0, could even be an 8.5. Is it a curve? I don't know, I've had 7.5s and 8.0s that I think had better eye appeal and I'm not so sure they were that far off on the technical flaws. When you move that far up in price you expect the book to look reasonably like the grade. For me, the curve is fine if you want to be a little soft because of scarcity, but at $100k plus I want to be sure I'm getting what I paid for. As tth has pointed out several times, you can literally pick up the phone and throw money at just about every marvel to obtain it. You can't do that with DCs. On top of that, I think there's a different style and aesthetic to DCs. I happen to like that, but more people prefer the power and dynamic action that the early Marvels have.
  11. We can go 50/50 on the business model and rate them together.
  12. You know, I agree with you on the Doctor Strange 49 cover -- a number of folks told me that they thought it was a subpar cover and that Rogers wasn't as desirable for a lot of folks. I took a longer look at the image, and while I still love it, the hands and forearms do a look a bit of proportion, and when it crept up I sort of backed off on it. That said, it's an awesome image and you're probably right about it.
  13. it's an ugly, ugly, ugly 9.2 -- the 8.5 didn't perform much better at $36k. I think a better example of an 8.5 would perform much better. I would absolutely have been a buyer on a high grade show 22 -- but neither copy was attractive for the price point.
  14. There was a lot of art that I really liked in this auction but of the super pieces I was only able to score the Starlin piece, which I really liked. I bid on some others but had the kicked out of me on most stuff.
  15. Alex and Austin now run the business. Greg is involved, but the boys are in charge now.
