  1. I fully agree with Malvin - I just got some 1418R snugs from Gerber, had some large pieces, and the snugs are great even for smaller 11" x 17" pieces (they don't seem to move in the Mylar) - it's 4 mil Mylar D (99% anti-UV, although my Mylar-bagged pieces are in my Profolio and never see daylight ;-) http://www.egerber.com/category.asp?CategoryID=450&SubcategoryID=559
  2. It's not that easy to find my old threads after the migration, I think I'll bump this one
  3. Just saw the movie X-Men: Apocalypse and this Astonishing X-Men cover with a nuclear blast in the background reminded me of the movie - or maybe I just like "giant skull" covers I won the original art cover a few hours ago The original art can be seen here: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1379831 Maybe I'll add an overlay with the title someday
  4. Awesome cover alignment and no miswrap, it's rare to see on #19 books - as goes for all the books you just posted, you've got a great eye for comic books! Personally it took me ages to find my #19
  5. Thanks, it was a tough choice, I could have gotten some nice art instead, but I'm a great fan of Mary Jane and really like this book - But I'm not fond of paying more than $2 per Registry point
  6. You're lucky - I had to sleep on my phone to get up 3:30 AM Had to give a lecture 8:30 AM I just love collecting comics
  7. Got this one, had to bleed much more than I hoped for, but she's a beauty
  8. Awesome books and great work I simply had to show your photos to my wife. My wife is very concerned that she'll outlive me and be left with tons of stuff to get rid of. Thus it was great to show her the photos and say: "Look, you really have no worries, my dear - but Mike's wife may have reasons to be worried, though" - Sorry for the bad humor
  9. It feels like Christmas today - I got two pieces back framed behind Museum Glass. I thought that Garfield needed something else than the usual black frame, so I went for a golden frame and whitish passepartout/mat: King Conan also got the golden treatment, but this is a painted cover where I normally wouldn't choose a black frame and black mat (black frames and mats are great for inked pieces): Close-up: King Conan is already on the wall in the kids' gaming room - I hope that the piece may inspire them when playing role-playng computer games More info about the pieces: Garfield: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1363400 King Conan: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1363396
  10. I've been trying to fight my urge to bag all books, since it seems to decrease my - and the kids - motivation for reading the books (the hassle of unbagging books ). I can see you're ahead of me, maybe I should just give up and start bagging tonight, sigh You've got a great view from your nook window! And I'd love to visit Hard Water someday
  11. I'd also like to thank Brian & Bill for a fun, inspiring and interesting competition Furthermore, I'm happy for the 13 votes given to my new Garfield strip - thanks! It was nice to see my covers getting a few votes too - getting votes in the published covers category seems like quite a different ballgame than getting votes in the comic strip category Best, Rune
  12. I still remember this famous quote from the movie "Conan the Barbarian" (1982): Mongol General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life? Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair. Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life? Conan: Crush your enemies. See them driven before you. Hear the lamentations of their women. And then win the CAF Lowry Published/Unpublished Covers competition. Mongol General: That is good! That is good!
  13. +1 I'd even suggest that if Frazetta, Kirby or Ditko etc. draws a horse on a napkin for a grandchild, and the napkin later is sold on for example HA, then that drawing should not be posted on CAF. If a piece isn't directly related to a comic book it simply does not belong on CAF (and if I ask Jim Davis to draw Galactus, and Davis does just that, then I'm also not sure that such a piece should be part of CAF - but that's another discussion )
  14. Maybe Mollie can help, if she finds the time and agrees with the suggestions above
  15. Nighthawk 2016, thank you - I just bought this book, but cannot add it to my collection Sincerely, Rune
  16. Not to defend anyone, but I found a nice published cover in the recent PedigreeComics auction. I realized immediately I've seen the piece before, and it was from the Donnelly’s. The piece did not sell possibly due to a high reserve price - but I didn't think the reserve price was that high. I contacted Steve and he offered me the piece at the reserve price, and that was fine with me. Maybe the reserve price was 30 % higher than FMV, but probably not higher, compared to recent auction prices on HA.com for similar covers. Steve arranged for FedEx shipping, even though he doesn't usually use FedEx and Steve only billed me exact costs for shipping (which was expensive, more than $100, it was an international shipment). He (actually his brother Rich) shipped the piece a few days after receiving my payment. Payment was sent to "friends and family" using PayPal (Steve required this), I was slightly nervous about this, but everything worked out fine. Before buying the piece I did ask Burkey (Romitaman.com) for his opinion about the piece, and he didn't find anything wrong or suspicious about the piece. In short, I had a positive experience, I don't think I paid much above FMV, shipping was fast and packaging great - but I did pay what Steve asked - and I bought a published cover (for example unpublished pieces and commissions may be harder to investigate for added pieces etc.) After receiving the piece I asked if Steve could remove the piece from his site including CAF - and he did that in minutes, quote from his email reply: "It has been removed from all galleries on our site. Please let me know whenever you see anything else on our web site that you like??? Best, Steve coollinesartwork - new listings http://coollinesart.com/newgalleryroom.asp COOL LINES ARTWORK www.coollinesartwork.com Comic book and newspaper strip artwork... bought sold and traded http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=3563 email valnstevez@aol.com" Actually I never had trouble getting e-mail replies from Steve, typically he wrote back in a few hours or a day - again I know other collectors have had different experiences; this post is just to inform about my experience buying from Steve in October 2016.
  17. In the early 1980s - when I was 10 or 11 years old - I started reading Garfield, and for long I've been searching for a comic strip from 1978 to 1982 (the early Garfield years). I'm happy to finally get this strip from August 1980, it's also signed by Jim Davis: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1363400 My 8-year-old son really likes this painted King Conan cover - I think it's great too - and I just added it to my CAF collection: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1363396 Published cover: Wonder if the new King Conan/Arnold movie will be done in 2017
  18. Amazing If I remember correctly the art sold in 2012 or 2013 for about the same amount I spent in total on my Conan the Barbarian #1 9.8, Spidey #48 9.8 and Spidey #40 9.6 back then - so it's a massive investment. I sometimes wonder if collectors will appreciate these books and art in 30 years, or if we are some of the last persons to truly care for such items, we'll see
  19. It's fun to see that you've got that book, congrats Actually it's a reprint (published in 1990) of the original Danish book containing the Spidey #121 story. In the 1960s to 1980s we weren't far behind over here, so in June 1973 (I think) the American Spidey #121 was published, and the Danish Spidey book containing #121 was already published in March 1974 - here it is (unfortunately with an big ugly sticker on the cover): And thanks for all your great photos - especially the one of your kids, hope some of them appreciate the effort you've put into your collections I do like to read about your bargains - great value doesn't always have to be expensive! In these CGC forums the most expensive items get a lot of attention, but the constant effort chasing expensive and rare books and/or art can be exhausting - and may consume way too much time and money. It's all about balance, and it looks like you've found a great one! Best, Rune
  20. @Rune - I sure did! I'll just wait a few days to see if anyone prefers one over the other before I change the set, FYI. More than one year has now passed, still close to no one collects TPBs - at least in the sets I monitor. Are there still plans to remove these horrible TPB infections from our beloved original sets? Best, Rune
  21. Just bought this Jonah Hex cover by Ross Andru - it's a Bronze Age cover from June 1983 and one of the funniest Hex covers IMHO, well if you're into this sort of humor :-) http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1352497 If this cover was given a title I think it should be: "A perfect farewell to an enemy" After checking out all Jonah Hex covers #73 was one of my favorites. See all the published Jonah Hex covers here: http://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/jonah-hex - I really love the Hex covers, and the #73 cover perfectly depicts the emotion "distress" BTW did you know that Hex has defeated both Batman and Superman?
  22. It's still available here: http://www.coollinesartwork.com/featured.asp?Piece=303458 I'm wondering if such pieces ever were sent to PedigreeComics or if they all still are at Coollinesartwork. The scan looks identical on both websites. When buying from HA or CLink I think they always had the pieces in their hands, so they're able to check and investige the pieces if necessary. If most of the pieces are still at the consignors, then PedigreeComics can do little to evaluate the pieces before the auction is over. I've always thought that the good thing about HA or CLink was that their art experts provided some security if there's something odd about a piece. If you're sure Ron Lim didn't draw anything on this piece, then to me there's a serious error in the listing on Pedigreecomics - it directly states that Ron Lim is the primary artist of this particular piece. On a side note over the years I've bought a few books from Doug, never had any trouble and I didn't pay more than usual compared to GPA prices - and Doug was very helpful.
