Aren't PLODs still reviled? I wouldn't bid on a PLOD.

I don't think perceptions of brittle pages will change. Dust will never be that collectible.

Eventually every book -- and every collector -- turns to dust.

A lessening of PLOD hate would save some books from turning to dust sooner than they have to, if collectors restore the pages or reinforce them. And it might be a disincentive to s.c.u.m. aka "sellers of cut up material" (not my term) if marrying pages designed to improve a book would stop being reviled more than the deliberate destruction of books.

(I get dizzy from the irony that pages which were trimmed with the INTENT of making a book appear better was deemed so repugnant that it was deemed necessary to put any and all things that were trimmed in a "restored" label even if the trimming was very clearly not done with the intent of making it better  and even very clearly makes the book or page appear worse.  And you can now get bright blue labels on pages that have been cut from otherwise intact wraps -- meaning collectors are being rewarded for having the clear INTENT of deliberately destroying it).

    What books? Just curious.

I guess the way to get deals is to put in low-ball bids on a bunch of books and hope that other bidders don't show up on one or two of them. The chances of getting a deal aren't great if you target a particular book. I just paid $4,850 plus tax and shipping for this one—3.7 times guide. I wanted a Novick cover in 8.0 or above for my artist type set, so I can live with the price. I'm sure the consignor was happy. I don't think the book would have gone for much more on Heritage, and the commission would have been bigger.

ETA: I guess this comic predicted the future. The woman is about to become an unwilling cornea donor for the benefit of a rich old man, and there have been many reports worldwide of poor people and political prisoners in developing countries being killed in order to supply organ transplants for rich people.

    https://brighterworld.mcmaster.ca/articles/analysis-killing-prisoners-for-transplants-forced-organ-harvesting-in-china/

The blind man's wearing a "help the blind" placard which implies that he's been begging for money.  So did he get so much in donations that he was able to hire criminal doctors to kidnap and dismember that pretty brunette?  And, if so, did his donors know that's what the money was going for?

  3. Tried to bid on a couple personal copies yesterday but hadn't recently tried to bid in the last seconds on comiclink and forgot how clunky it is.  You start your bid and a new screen comes up asking you to confirm but the screen has no clock or bid count.  So you don't know how much time you have or whether the bid you're contemplating has already been exceeded.  And if you make a bid that falls short you can't just quickly place another bid.  You have to react and then hit the effing back button, let it load, move your mouse to the appropriate spot and type in a new number (and again, you have nothing showing you how much time is left and what the current bid is)

Not many GA sales of these. You have some characters on the bay listing them for a 10x premium that will never sell Like this one

Bur what actually is a fair premium? There have been some Jerry Robinson/Stan Lee/Bob Kane file copies I’ve seen, but not in recent memory.

Lots of these types of books coming up on CL this weekend but the prices are so wonky and unpredictable to the point it’s impossible to set a bidding strategy with a limited budget.

    Any help is appreciated

Overstreet used to say provenance made a copy's value 2x - 5x.  I don't know if it's still saying so.

Aside from that, whenever you're looking to value something it always depends on who you're talking to and whether they are

    1) buying or

    2) selling, or if

    3) they have things like it and want to keep the values up or

    4) they don't have things like it and want to get some cheap, or

    5) they don't want items like it and don't want other people to want them.

Final caveat: people in one category may sometimes switch to another

Well, not really a joke since it happened very often.

If you ever want to buy a copy of any "Famous First Edition", make sure that the original cover is still with the book (the wrap after the cover). I have copies where the 2nd wrap is missing because I didn't think to check this - the things one has to keep in mind when buying books ...

What I would like to see is one of those hardcover editions from Lyle Stuart, Inc., just to find out how they differ from the DC copy. And naturally, if the Famous First Edition F-5 HC (Batman #1) does exist ...

If you wanna see somebody trying to sell the FFE reprints as originals, just look on ebay and it won't be long before one appears.

Also, the CGC's job isn't to save books from collectors who "would probably damage books further."

Their job is to provide consistent and accurate grading Giving some books a pass for minor color touch and glue isn't fair, consistent, or accurate. Sure, it's noted on the blue label, but it's just as easy to note it on the purple.

Restoration is restoration and should be clearly noted as such. I don't care if minor color touch and glue is common on Golden Age books. It belongs in a purple label. :sumo:

Way I remember hearing it, the Purist Old Timer's demanded there be a purple label specifically to disincentivize restoration to books because it was "desecration" (not imagining the use of that word; it's an actual quote from a grader).  Arguably that has led to books being destroyed to remove dots of color touch because a dot of ink on a corner is seen by the POTs as less offensive than having the entire corner torn off.  And it's led to people attempting to divine what was in the mind of a former owner -- was the mark accidental or designed to deceive?  A mustache on a hero's face or a giant name or code written that defaces the cover? Much less offensive that a spot of black on top of a crease. That same mindset has led to people literally cutting books into pieces if the complete book cannot get a blue label

I did a comparison between the different versions of Detective Comics # 27 as well. Here you can see first the original 1939 edition, then the 1974 Famous First edition, and finally the 1990 (Theakstonized) Archives edition. Does this mean that the Famous First Edition of Detective Comics # 27 was not redrawn like the Action Comics # 1 but based on original stats? In my eyes it does look as if it was at least partially redrawn.

I don't know if it was redrawn for the FFE or not.  I just know that some stats on aged newsprint appeared on the market a few years ago, which might have been related to a reprint of the first batman story in an anniversary issue in the late 60s (which, I guess would be 1969, for the 30th?).  It would be interesting to compare the original to that reprint.  I think the stats should be searchable as well.  IIRC Heritage sold them.

Probably 'art' from DC Famous First Edition (ffe) Action #1 or Superman #1 reprinting Action 1 pages. I still own the artboard to cover of FFE Superman 1, Whiz #2 (1) front cover and All-Star 3(?) front and back cover artboards in my storage.

To clarify the FFE pieces are not stats but actual drawn art.  Just not the original 1930s art;  They meticulously recreate the original art because they apparently did not have original stats for the Superman pages.  IIRC DC have stats (or dupes of OA stats) from the interior of Detective 27 which they used in making a reprint in the 60s, prior to the FFEs, so they most likely still had stats for use of reprinting that book among the FFEs (and maybe they had others as well, just not the Supes). So it's new art that was either created via lightbox or drawn directly on top of washed out silverprints.

  9. I guess I must've experienced misrepresentation because I've seen a piece or two described as being primarily the work of lesser artists (when I owned them), only to see the same pieces, described by the same people, as being primarily the work of greater artists (after I sold them).  Gotta figure one description or the other was off.

For 100k they could have bought Chipotle stock, AI or diabetes weight loss stocks, heck,  even high yield savings account for 5 APY. A questionable investment when it has been announced that Norrin Radd the Silver Surfer will not be in the movie, but a alternative Silver Surfer version will be in it.

If the market wasn't a factor and I was offered a choice between one of the 9.8 books and this, I would prefer the lower grade with provenance copy every time.
