  1. Welcome to the boards once again, Danny...........it's been awhile, but certainly good to see you back here.
  2. Ah........the classic McFarlane signature with the glossy silver ink. I remember getting him to sign one of my Spidey 300's at one of the local con's here before he made it big and starting charging money for his signatures. I guess CGC will now consider these unverified signatures as a scrawled defacement defect and downgrade severely for them. Especially since this runs counter to their verified signature service where they can pull in a ton of additional revenue even though the 2 signatures looks exactly the same.
  3. Well, they probably figured that if the CGC 4.0 graded copy can fetch $11,400 or almost 23X condition guide, than an entry level CGC 1.8 graded copy should be worth at least that same shocking multiple of condition guide. BTW: Is there even such a thing as a First Print Edition of this book or does Overstreet simply have it wrong in terms of having an April/May 1945 copy listed in his guide? Both the CGC census population report and the GCD does not indicate the existence of such a book as they only have a listing for the Fall 1945 edition of this book.
  4. Well, it looks like both of these books haven't moved up by even a single dollar since it passed the $100K mark and the restored Action 1 is now in the top spot by a long shot. I guess everybody is probably waiting until the last week before throwing in some more bids on these books here.
  5. Who knows? A few boardies here may indeed have performed a valuable public service. Somehow, I strongly doubt that the 2 power players in this whole collectibles field of ours, namely Ivy and Halperin, would tend to agree with your rather negative market deflating point of view here.
  6. Toss them in the trash. It’s a plastic bag! Yikes!!! I've got all my BA era books which I cherry picked off the shelves of the LCS in the mid-70's still shoved away into those old sticky yellowing poly bags. Are you saying that I should toss them all in the trash can even though they still look minty fresh the last time I took some of them out several years ago?
  7. Hey Robot Man; It looks like we either have a great love for the underdog or we just got tired of seeing the same old same old GGA books being hyped in the Overstreet from as far back as the early 70's. I also prefer the Blue Beetle 52 with the gorgeous colors over the long acknowledged BB 54. As for Seven Seas 4, I remember first trying to chase down a Seven Seas 6 and had to settle for a SS 4 instead as consolation since that was the only one which the dealer had at the time. As for Phantom Lady's, I guess I must also once again be in the minority as I prefer the PL 23 over the PL 17.
  8. If I remember correctly, some board members thought at the time this particular book might have gone for an even higher price point considering the only other one close to it in grade was only a single CGC 9.0 graded copy.
  9. Great book and one that is extremely hard to find, especially in mid-grade or better, congrats. The jungle themed pre-hero DCs seem to be in very high demand lately. Personally, I've always found these particular pre-hero books extremely hard to find and have always been in much higher demand as compared to their other neighboring issues. Although this particular hippo issue is at the top of the list, others favorites of mine would also include Adventure 34, 36, and even books like More Fun 47 and 48 with the dinosaur cover. I am actually surprised that Overstreet still hasn't bother to break out some of these books to a much greater extent since there is a definite and significant difference in price between some of these issues.
  10. Another example being this copy of Star Trek 1 which I initially thought had gone for a pretty strong price at $20,400: Then again, maybe not so much as the Heritage Archives indicates the Twin Cities copy in equivalent grade selling for $22,705 way back in 2012 and I also remember CC successfully auctioning their highest graded copy for over $40K quite a few years ago.
  11. May I be the first to congratulate you on those books! You definitely must have me confused with somebody else here who has much deeper pockets than myself. Being the old school type of collector, I am used to paying much closer to guide (preferably a discount to guide ) and a book would have to hit quite a few targets before I would be willing to pay a huge premium, let along multiples of guide for a particular book. Posted these 2 books as just a sign that it's nice to see the strength of the comic book marketplace spread beyond the traditional heroes who likes to wear their undies on the outside and into genres that have traditionally been in kind of a deep freeze.
  12. Great book and one that is extremely hard to find, especially in mid-grade or better, congrats. The jungle themed pre-hero DCs seem to be in very high demand lately. Well, I am glad that I didn't win this turd of a book in the end then. Hey Electron: If you brought this book based upon HA's incorrect auction lot descripton write-up attributing the cover artwork to Flessel instead of reading the CGC label, I will consider taking this book off your hands for half the price just to help you out here.
  13. Congrats on this beautiful pickup as I was in there, but obviously not willing to match the bid which you was willing to go up to. An extremely HTF book that very seldom ever comes to market in this type of condition. Also an absolutely beautiful cover image used on the Double Action book which was featured as the frontispiece illustration for Volume 2 of the Gerber PhotoJournal, similar to how the cover of Suspense 3 was used for Volume 1. Definitely saying a lot for this classic cover artwork by Flessel.
  14. I'm confused. I don't believe the grade itself is impacted by the page quality, that's separate. Say you had two books that were somehow identical sans page quality. One could be a 6.0 white, while the other is a 6.0 brittle. Are you stating you thought the brittle one would be say a 5.0 instead of a 6? I believe you might actually be correct here with your statement in general for almost all books. Since CGC doesn't disclose their grading standards though for so-called proprietary reasons , I do believe they take the PQ into account and downgrade accordingly once a book starts to get into the Slightly Brittle category or worse.
  15. Well, who's to say that this wasn't a CGC 8.0 quality condition book that was then downgraded to CGC 6.0 to account for the Slightly Brittle pages.
  16. Yes, they did way back in April of 2013: https://www.cgccomics.com/news/article/3327/CGC-Modifies-Stance-on-Grading-Submissions-with-Tape/ So basically, CGC will now grade the book as if the tape was not there which means they will downgrade accordingly for the flaw that the tape is masking.
  17. Unfortunately at the shallow end of the pool where many of us swim in, it'll almost assuredly be the FRONT cover that's missing.
  18. Although the old traditional GGA cover books have been super red hot in this current marketplace, it looks like the new wave of GGA cover books must be even hotter wne a book like this with the much dreaded and usual absolute price killer of having Slightly BRITTLE Pages can still managed to fetch $12K or close to 15X condition guide: I never ever knew that GGA (i.e. Good Guy Art ) cover art was so super red hot!!! Looks like the Seven Seas 4 girl is going to have to do a bit of fast swimming to catch up to this rather dapper looking gent here.
  19. Being a long term collector myself, I've never quite understood the mentality for buyers to put some of their books back out to market so soon after paying what most likely amounts to top dollar for their book: Especially when the chance of losing money is quite high after paying top of market like this Wings 90 which sold on one of the CC Event Auctions last year for $4K, but only able to fetch $3K on this go round with Heritage. Okay, in this day and age of CPR and flipping, I guess an entire year must seem like a lifetime, but still.
  20. I believe it would have sold north of 2 million if it were a newly discovered 9.4 You never know what might have happened if it wasn't flagged here on the boards as a previously lower graded copy, which I am sure Heritage should have known about right from the start. At least, we didn't get a long extended video from them claiming it to be another one of these "cedar chest" finds that had been locked away for decades, and of course filtering out key details of the book at the same time. Or did some bad boardies cut them off at the pass before they got a chance to release this promo video.
  21. Most were private buys. Great bunch of books. My favorite GGA run in the golden age with a nod to Phantom Lady of course. Most definitely a great GGA run of books in terms of the Junior's. I thought one of the names of the game with private buys is that you should hopefully be able to get a slightly better price as compared to public auctions where competing bidders would be out there in force running the price up on you. On the other hand, I guess the other name of the game with private buys is that it gives you ACCESS to the books where others would not have, and with in-demand hot books, this usually comes at a price. Of course, the key being that you get all the books in the end.
  22. Yes indeed, as it was certainly nice to see some long out of favor genres or publishers like Dell with their Four Color run be able to fetch strong prices: Even a book like this (albeit a pedigree copy and the highest graded copy) being able to sell for multiples to guide at $2,880 along with a few other Popeye's. Or even some of the Four Color Western books which have never seen much steam at all for multi-decades: Love these uber HG Dell File Copies such as this one here which sold for multiple top of guide at $1,080. Okay, I might be stretching it a bit with the Westerns here since books since although virtually all of them sold at a healthy premium to guide, you still got the odd ones like Rocky Lane #1 which managed to go at only a big discount to guide.
  23. That was a surprise to me as well. At the end of the day I broke just above even on the Junior and Sunny runs. Definitely awesome books and I hope some boardies got some of them. If you pretty much broke even on the Junior set of books, I assume you must not have picked them up from Heritage then since their archives indicate that all of these prices were the highest they had ever recorded for any of their Junior books? I took a half-hearted stab at Junior's 11 and 13, came close, but still no cigar.
  24. That’s fair, but part of me feels that if the book was not a “tortured 9.4”, it would’ve sold for even more money. Needless to say, you are definitely not the only one as Heritage changed their pre-auction estimate for this book from $2M down to only $1M after it was outed by a couple board members here as being a CGC 8.5 graded copy which was then regraded as a CGC 9.0 copy before acheiving its current CGC 9.4 grade. Some boardies here seem to believe this initial $2M figure was really nothing more than a typo on Heritage's part, but I find that kind of hard to believe they would make a mistake like that twice in their initial hype and promotion for the book.
  25. All I can say is that this is an absolutely shockingly strong price for a copy of All Top 16 in CGC 8.5: Although it's one of the 2 highest graded copies, it's still only a CGC 8.5. Or are they possibly hoping for Seven Seas 4 mentality to come into play when they look at this cover.
