  1. I wonder if you and I are the only Golden Age collectors in Newport. Could be, I know others in Orange County, but none here in Newport Beach. Is Billy's at the Beach Restaurant still in business at Newport Beach? The original owner there used to have some GA books, but that was 25 years ago when I was down there for my first SD Convention. Pretty sure he doesn't have any more now since he had to open his restaurant.
  2. Why is that copy of Fantastic 3 coming in only at a CGC grade of 0.5 Poor? I assume the book must be missing something that is not obvious from just a front cover scan since it presents much better than a 0.5 Poor copy. No BC - I can live with that. For a classic cover book like this, it would be much harder to live without a front cover.

  4. Since you are the acknowledged expert when it comes to the Fox books, would the early Fox books from 1939 & early 1940 be easier to find than these later Fox books from 1941 to '42?
  5. There were some scans and discussions but they probably 'disappeared'. No, not referring to the damaged wavy GA books which were encased in the bad new holder as we saw lots of those. I am referring to the latest new case holder with the inner well which is supposed to do away with both the Newton rings and the waviness. I have seen lots of books in these latest modified case holders, but to this point in time, not a single one from the GA with the larger and thicker books.
  6. No scans of GA books in the modified new CGC case holders? Just asking since I have not yet seen a single scan anywhere of a GA book in the new case. I am wondering how the larger thicker books would fit into this case or would their be issues with the sizing of the book to the inner well and finally to the outer case.
  7. I thought Adventure 283 has already moved up quite a bit in the marketplace. Even in Overstreet which is usually dead slow, the book is listed for $900 at top of guide.
  8. Twenty years ago, I used to say that it were the early Archie books. Well, I can definitely no longer say that as the market prices on the early Archie's have gone up like a rocket over the past several years. Another one which I have mentioned before and which I still feel is undervalued are the second issues of the 2 big iconic characters from DC. From my point of view both Action 2 and especially Detective 28 are extremely undervalued given how early these issues are. Yes, I know that they do not feature the main character on their covers, but come on, they are the second appearances for both Superman and Batman. And in the case of Detective 28, probably the scarcest of all the pre-Robin Detective books.
  9. Would any of your copies be free of those notorious spine ticks which seems to show up on every single copy of Cerebus 1 that I have seen so far? Since these spine ticks appears to be a production issue with this particular book, does CGC discount for this flaw since they seem to do it for other production related flaws on other books?
  10. So, you are saying after you got your first PL 17, it confirmed for you that PL 23 was indeed the better cover.
  11. Absolutely stunning copy!!!! +1 Actually, you need the grease pencil mark there. Otherwise, how in the world would anybody know that was issue #23.
  12. I guess this must be the version that Mitch has been patiently waiting for as opposed to the PG rated theatrical version that was released.
  13. Didn't know that you was missing the Funny Picture Stories on the left. Never really thought it was that hard to get relative to other Centaurs since I had picked one up from Harley several years ago. Hope you find your last 2 to finish up your Centaur collection.
  14. Now, there's somebody with a spicy and saucy taste! That must be one of the most classic lingerie covers of all time. Almost picked up a real killer years ago, but apparently somebody else had called in a few hours earlier and beat me to it. Probably turned out for the best since it was from Mark Wilson, so it most likely would have come back as a PLOD. As for the debate between PL 17 and PL 23, I have always unsuccessfully gone after the 23, but this was just because I knew that 17 was way past my budget. If price was not a factor, it would still probably be a toss-up between the two of them. Some days, the full frontal shot of PL 17 looks nicer, and on other days, the close up on PL 23 looks nicer.
  15. Would this book still be a PLOD if there was no color touch on the cover, BUT if it did have the 4 pieces of tape on the interior of the cover? Or would it be a GLOD?
  16. Nope. Dr. Occult was first. He had a cape? Don't think so. Yes he did in More Fun issues 14-17, which were published in 1936 - 1937. Your are correct, sir ... so let me rephrase: More Fun 31 was the first printed look at Superman ... ever! Well, if you are talking about Dr. Occult, then how about going all the way back to January of 1933 for Science Fiction #3 where Siegel & Shuster had their Reign of the Superman story. Ok, he did look more like Lex Luthor there as opposed to Superman.
  17. Those dates would seem to make sense since they fall on a Tuesday and Thursday which were the 2 days for newsstand distribution where I lived during the 1960's and 70's. Not sure about the 1930's though, but it would surprised me if they were the same 2 days.
  18. Ronaldo, nice to hear from you! Where have you been? Yes, it's almost been 9 months since your last posting. BTW: Thanks again for that nice copy of Star Spangled 45.
  19. Though NA 24 is my favorite, NA 25, 26, 27, and 28 are indeed rarer. How rare is NA 13 in comparison since it is designated as Rare by Overstreet and is also given a SI rating of 10 by Gerber in his Photojournal? No doubt those watery theme adventure covers are just so much better such as NA 25, 27, 30, 31, etc.
  20. OH MY GOODNESS Have the inside front cover shot of this. Does that count.? WHOA!!! Undervalued I agree 100% Is it not the More Fun 31 that should be more important since it apparently came out about a week or so before this Detective 15? Not sure about the release date for New Adventure 26 since it is supposedly so rare that this is one of the few books that Overstreet does not even have a valuation for in his price guide, although I still prefer the cover for NA 27 a lot more.
  21. Wow, I was not even aware that CGC would grade books from the Victorian Age. Can't even seem to find it under the Victorian Age listings in the Overstreet guide. That must be one of the earliest graded books out there since it is from 1899.
  22. from the prolific mister magik woo collection - it's such a nice copy. Yes, it would appear that Magik is sticking pretty firm to his initial plan of auctioning off his books over the next few summers. Only problem is that what was once the highest graded copy of a particular issue may not necessarily retain this title by the time they hit the auction block. Especially when it comes to some of these early SA Marvel books where some private collectors still have uber HG copies sitting in their collections just waiting to be graded and sold when the time comes.
  23. Looks closer to an 7.5 to 8.0 with the upper left corner and center wear. Still a gorgeous copy of a famous icon. Pages look sweet. 100k sale? Yes, back cover definitely looks a lot sharper than the front cover on this particular copy here. Like you said, still a gorgeous copy on the whole though.
  24. I just picked up a 7.5 for less than 70K for a customer...so I "doubt" it is a real sale... R, I texted the guy and got the same story. Could be real. The 9.0 Spidey 1 he has sure is pretty. well, there is a sucker born every day, so who knows Under 70K for a 7.5 yes, 110K for a 7.5 I call NPB. Any guesses from the wise board members as to what the 8.5 graded copy in the upcoming HA auction in August will go for?
  25. Is this Phantom book not from early 1939? If you are looking for a pre-June 1938 Phantom book, you should probably go to his first comic book appearance in Ace Comics #11 which had a cover date of February 1938.
