  1. yep. might be the same copy as rockman's but I think it is a different one if he has had his copy since 07-08...I think the .5 copy Terry obtained last year was from a local collector (SoCal), so probably a different copy..

I bought most of the run in 07-08. The deal with Yannis was the last one in 09.

  2. Terry O'Neil offered me a CGC .5 o/w Tec 31 last year before I bought my copy...it was sold to someone in NY and Yannis finally got it...not sure if this is the same copy Rockman, but Terry had offered it to me for $5500...

That sounds about right. Yannis gave me a great deal, accepting cash plus comics. My records show it was sold by amerweb on eBay (4/21/2008) with a Buy It Now of $4K. The slab went to a buyer on the West Coast who sold it to Terry's Comics. Terry sold it to someone on the East Coast. It fell off the back of a truck. (kidding) Yannis picked it up, bought it, sold it to me. Now it's back on the West Coast again.

If only this slab can talk, there might be a movie: The Brotherhood of the Traveling Comic Book.

  3. Very, VERY impressive!

I'm sure you can't wait to see the #29 when you get it back.

I also really like your #31, reminds me of my #33 due to the solid PQ and the missing the back-cover. Out of curiosity, what do you think the FMV on the #31 would be?

Good question. I'm not sure what is the current FMV for a 31...nor do I follow trends. I guess I'm what you call a value investor, looking to profit from a long term hold. For the entire run (including Bat 1), my upfront costs didn't go above 15K...and most of the books were bought in 2007-2008.

  4. Here's my run in no particular order. I've been very lucky in acquiring affordable, low-grade pre-Robins before the prices skyrocketed. Not displayed below, are a Tec 29 (currently being restored by Ken) and a Bat 1 (shown elsewhere). I also used to own a Tec 37, now in the collection of Alex.

  5. What the price of a low grade Tec #31? hm

The last CGC 2.5 sold for $14,000 earlier this year.

Well, that book won't be in my collection (Can't save that much cash :( )

It is pricey. But they all are.

That is, until you meet someone named Helen on eBay. :baiting:

Sorry, buddy. I just can't help it. lol

  6. where did you find more pictures of beerbohm in his warehouse, and with glue and applier in hand? and who knew he and hoffman were scrapbooking buddies?

Beerbohm? Where is Bob? I was gonna tell him instead of fussing with the cow gum, scotch tape, and tack iron in putting together Jerry's All Star 8, he ought to go the opposite. Pull it apart and sell each individual wrap slabbed. The recent phenomenon with the Action 1 shows that money can be made in a jiffy.

It's economics. It's Sun Tzu. When everybody expects you to ying, you gotta yang.

    :jokealert:

  7. Does he sell on Ebay?

He used to, a lot - the IRS identified him as a PowerSeller and he opened up a second ebay account, but mailed a package with his exact same address to an acquaintance of mine, who tipped me off.

Here is my personal experience: I used to consider Dave Anderson a friend - I would call him every year after San Diego to provide a report and even rec'd an invite to view the books at his bank vault, so I flew across country to do so. I spent a lot of money with him, and still have the checks from the transactions.

But then I suddenly learned how he had been cheating me - and so many others - for many, many years by not disclosing restoration (this included restored Mile Highs bought on the cheap and then peddled for more multiples without any disclosure. For example, Mile High Green Lantern #1 anyone?).

Now we know how 'The Dentist' acquired the very best comic books in the world - on the backs of his many victims.

So he's a comic book villain?
    :roflmao:

He might make a great movie villain.

  8. . . . . I am impressed with the legacy Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Jerry Robinson, and MANY GHOSTS ARTISTS AND WRITERS left behind with these glorious early adventures.
Gardner Fox deserves more than an honorable mention in that list.

+1 In those early pre-Robin adventures there weren't that many ghost writers and artists. Apart from Finger, Gardner Fox wrote the stories in #29-34 (except for the origin in #33 by Finger).

As for artists, the DC bullpen originally helped out to correct for Kane's rather weak art; for instance Guardineer in 28, Moldoff in 33-35. #36 onwards the studio team of Kane, Robinson and Roussos is more dominant.

  9. I have several copies of each issue and every girl, I ever dated including my wife was asked to read the Watchmen and tell me what they thought about it. I asked them to read it because it was that important to me... to have them read IMHO one of the greatest stories of all time.

    Uh yeah.

I love comics and have read/collected them since I was about 5, but I've never felt it necessary to ask my women to read them. ???

I do ask her to accept them being in the house.. but read them? :roflmao: Let's not get greedy here people!

Whenever the latest issue of Walking Dead comes out, I withhold sex from my girlfriend until she's read it. :gossip:

I guess that counts as a "double win" for her when she refuses.

  10. my understanding is that john approached alex (bat-man) and offered the book if alex could paypal right away (because john/yannis) needed the money right then for some medical emergency...

again, I really don't see any valid excuse for john not at least contacting matt first, and I told this to john in a pM.... john screwed up if he wants to repair the damage, he can come here and try to repair, matt got screwed for sure, but for anyone to "assume" anything about alex's silence on the matter is just speaking out their "you know where"... apparently alex has pm'd matt and conversed (right?-maybe dan or surfer can confirm, or maybe they have knowledge of the PM and I would say that only they have the right to make a comment about alex, if they have first hand knowledge)...

but, this witch hunt mentality of "assumptions" , unless you know the facts, is so juvenile and ludicrous, it makes me want to vomit

But i had the money long before alex did and all i said to alex was i know you have the book and told him the story. to his reply was i had no idea he (yannis) was doing this and im sorry thats it

This is where Yannis needs to speak up. From what he has pm'ed, I get the sense there was some bad history in another transaction between you two...

There's more story here that we haven't heard. It might be best to step back and get Yannis's side and understand why he thought dealing with you was gonna be unreliable...why it was his best course to change horses in midstream, so to speak. I think what Yannis has done to you is basically unfair. But I really want to hear the reasoning.

BTW Matt, it might help clarify your story if you were to attach dates, instead of saying "this Wednesday" or "that Saturday." I'm totally confused as to your time line of events.

  11. If he's the sneaky under-cutting bounder that everyone makes him out to be, why would he want to display the controversial Tec 37

    Well - bingo?

:( You still don't get it. If X was guilty, why go through the trouble of painting a scarlet letter in X's sigline indicating that X was the other buyer in the first place?

Exactly...because he didn't know about the previous transaction when he made the purchase.

Clearly when he removed the book from his sig, he likely didn't want to draw additional attention to himself but from what I recall a few days ago, he was proud to show off his pre-Robin Tec collection within his sig.

If he knew that there was an agreed transaction with another buyer previously, he wouldn't have displayed that very book with pride for all of us members to see.

You have provided a plausible theory. But this isn't fact. It's also plausible he put it in his sig line because he was happy he acquired a grail, and didn't expect Matt (a relatively non-active forum member) to know about his sig line.

Further, why hasn't BatMan used any of the last 24 hours to say he didn't know?

If I was in BatMan's shoes, my first post would go like this:

It was ME who bought the book. Matt, I'm so sorry - I didn't know you already had an agreement to buy it from Yannis. Yannis didn't tell me!

From what I understand, that's more or less what Bat-Man has pm'ed to Matt.

Why he doesn't want to speak here, is his business. Some people don't believe in public confessionals. Or maybe he senses this thread is becoming a kangaroo court...? You really ought to be ashamed of yourself for accusations without having all the facts.

    I do get it.

What you are referring to is that he put it up in the first place.

What I'm referring to is that he took it down.

    :screwy:

Why he took it down absolutely has nothing to do with what happened between Yannis and Matt.

It's definitely not an admission of guilt on Bat-Man's part.

  14. What I don't understand is that both Yannis and Bat-man have had the time to PM board members but have not had the common courtesy to post in the thread with their side of the story.

While I would not hold Bat-man to blame for any of this, his silence on this matter speaks volumes.

It is my sense that believe Bat-Man knew he was undercutting someone else. His behavior has been secretive and guilt-ridden.

If it was ME who inadvertently undercut someone else, I'd be all over this thread in a minute proclaiming that I didn't know, and I'd show the scan up close for everyone to see, confirming I was the "innocent" buyer.

What I wouldn't do is remove the scan and pretend not to know about the thread by not posting.

Think about it. His name is being dragged through the mud. If he bought it without guile, why wouldn't he defend his innocence?

I sense Yannis told him someone else had already put down a down-payment (wouldn't you?), but Bat-Man just convinced Yannis to sell it to him.

Bat-Man is a stand up guy. If he's the sneaky under-cutting bounder that everyone makes him out to be, why would he want to display the controversial Tec 37 in his sig line to get this kind of grief? He really didn't know about other deals made.

  15. i'm not sure I like how some of these comments are coming about.

    which ones?

some I'm reading about how yannis may have thought that my boyfriend and Matt would go there to beat him up just stuff like that doesn't sit right with me. I know Matt very well and he would never, NEVER do anything of the sort

I'm not accusing Matt of being a thug. lol I don't know Matt and he's probably one of the nicest persons on this forum. :foryou: What I'm posing is a hypothetical in how some folks think before they meet with strangers to pass an expensive transaction in person.

  16. The idea less money was taken should be disregarded unless some sort of proof is offered, no? (shrug)

The idea "less money" is an issue is because it sets up the back drop there were extenuating circumstances for accepting less money; i.e., the seller was under pressure to accept less money.

I've spoken enough, and I'm not even directly involved. (shrug) I hope yannis and maybe bat-man can join in and provide some insight.

  17. [quote name=rockman2008A deal is a deal 2c [/quote]This goes back to why he sold to bat-man over mt1000. The former paid all in one shot compared to Matt who was planning on dividing time payments into who knows how long (? it's still unclear the time line agreed between mt1000 and yannis).

According to Dan, they were actually going to drive over there, pick the book up in person and finalize the deal on Saturday.

    DRX

Which would you prefer? Payment by electronic means that's guaranteed all at once.

Or would you rather wait for some stranger who may or may not show up with his friend at your door step after a four-hour drive? And if they do show up, wouldn't you be concerned about the possibility of being beaten up and robbed? The logistics for setting this up is a pain compared to the ease of a quick electronic payment. No?

Good god man, you are defending his actions?

And why are you so quick to conclude the obvious?? I think there's a lot of scenarios that can occur. I'm playing devil's advocate. It doesn't make sense why someone would accept less money unless there was a reason.
