  1. Hi. I just received this little three issue series in the mail today. This 3rd issue of Web Of Horror is what Overstreet says is the first published cover by Wrightson, published in 1970. Nice little series that I had never even heard of before seeing this set listed by Calm-mix.

  2. Hi, let me start by saying that I have been looking at alot of the posts on these message boards for quite awhile now, but have not posted until now. I am glad that everyone thinks that the price I paid for the Witching Hour #3 from strongside on ebay was insane. Last time I checked it was none of your business. I have been collecting for the better part of 30 years and have been building a high grade collection for some time now, and this book is one I have wanted. As you can check, the census shows that there are only 5 9.4's and 3 9.6's. I have dealt with Marty for quite awhile now and I will say that some of his books are some of the nicest in my collection. I asked for supersize scans on all the books I bought from him, and communicated for the entire week about the books. We have spoken on the phone before about certain books. I have no doubt that the book will grade at the least a 9.4 and possibly a 9.6. I realize that the price I paid was high, but when it grades, and it will, it will not look that bad. I have compared some of the books I have bought from Marty with graded books from Jason Ewert's auctions on ebay, and I'm sorry, but my copies are nicer. I have no hesitation in stating that the House of Secrets 106, Phantom Stranger 19, House of Secrets 94, Witching Hour 18 and 19 that I have bought from Marty are 9.6's. The day I choose to have them graded, which might be never, you will see them on the census. Before anyone says to show us the books, let me say that I no longer own a scanner. My other one went on the blink, and have not seen about replacing it. I am not some yahoo, but sometimes you pay more for something of quality. The nm and nm/m books I bought from Marty yesterday were just that, quality.

Well that makes more sense, I was a little confused as to how a book with no description and a 33.3% scan gets that kind of hammer price. I think there is a bit of a double standard, as a lot of collectors moan about the lack of nice raw stuff available and then are 893whatthe.gif when a raw book sells for big dollars. Personally hey man more power to you, buy what you want its your money. Personally I think that raw HG copies can be had far cheaper and that very few books from the late SA and BA are rare, but if you're happy with the book so much the better.

  3. I've seen him pay WAY OVER guide. I'm talking wacko prices......... screwy.gif

    That's more like it. grin.gifforeheadslap.gif

Thats just boggles my mind. Unless he asked for larger scans how can you pull the trigger on that book at that price with that crappy scan, I copied and pasted it into Adobe and it was so blurry at 200% and even then there is no way you can assess condition from that scan. Unless it actually is a 9.4 or a 9.6 that would be a flamed.gif

  4. Thanks Sterling - I think that was brought on more by the fact that most of the transactions I have had that are positive have been with board members - both buying and selling. If a lot more sellers put a little more effort into it there would be a lot more happy people out there.

Granted some ppl are shady by nature, but it astounds me some of these guys that sell 1000s of books with crappy scans. I mean my scanner cost me $100 - photbucket is $25 a year makepoint.gif

Actually screw those guys, just buy my books. yay.gif

Where are the good books? poke2.gif

I'm waiting until your Auctions finish to list the rest of the DCs hi.gif

  5. Back to the slabs, with another PC book with incredible structure and QP. Hard to believe this book didn't grade NM (more evidence that CGC has entered an especially strict period), and I suspect that there is not a dealer in the country who would have listed it raw as anything lower:

  7. Although I believe it to be of collection status it is worth recognising that CGC place the words "Mile High II" in the area reserved for Pedigree'd books. If it was viewed by CGC as a collection the words "Mile High II" should be placed in the same location as with other collections like "Nic Cage" & Dallas Stephens" 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I have heard that CGC recognise it as a pedigree but other groups eg: GPAnalisys do not recognise it as a pedigree and will not list the words "MHII" on the sales data. (George, If I have this wrong please correct me.) confused-smiley-013.gif

Hi Russell - I think CGC puts the Nic Cage/Dallas Stephens notation on the label, but they are certainly NOT pedigrees, or recognized as such (not in the classic definition of pedigree anyway).

Initially we did note MH2 sales, even though this was not originally noted on the CGC label. And more recently the MH2 has appeared on the labels. They usually bring in a higher result and hence why we originally noted the MH2s.

I don't think the NC/DS books have generally brought in a higher sale price, but I'm in categorization so I can't say for sure. It's something for George or Simon to report on as they are closer to the market reports.

    Cheers

    Rich

893scratchchin-thumb.gif Thanks for the info, but the issues of Pedigree was skirted. MH2 IS NOT A PEDIGREE makepoint.gif I Own 5 of them (see have a cigar for the most recent 2) with all apologies to the fab books you posted I would Never post them here.

If I ever do slab them (which I doubt) I will NOT BE INCLUDING THE CERTIFICATE, or in any way, shape, or form alerting CGC that they are MH2. This is the only way I see on righting this glaring injustice to all the other Peds. If I had enough cash I would buy every MH2 I could and start a bonfire on the Beach with the COAs - Alan you could fly out and toast marshmellows grin.gif

They are great books - but a warehouse find and not original owner off the stand purchases. makepoint.gifmakepoint.gifmakepoint.gifmakepoint.gifnews.gifnews.gif

Is nothing 893censored-thumb.gif sacred in this hobby anymore. sumo.gif

  8. Just bugging you Pov, I was super impressed with the haul you got seeing how LATE you hit the show floor devil.gif By picky I meant 2 things - one I only collect HOM and HOS and a few select covers in the other BA books - two I've been into BA horror for a few more years IE when you were still shelling out the $$$ for that PreCode stuff (ya I'm jealous). So I don't need as many BA Horror books having sewed up my copy of this and that book long ago. I was really impressed with some of the Horror crossover stuff you got. thumbsup2.gif

  9. Well I know that Pov was a little less picky that I was, but he still got some reall nice books - mostly since I don't collect Ghosts, or Witching Hour wink.gif and pointed him toward a few dealers that had the goods.

Perosnally I took 25 books all HOM, HOS WWBN, TOD everybook was 9.2 or better. The price scale went like this in terms of sticker to % of guide.

    1. TOD

    2. HOM

    3. HOS

    4 WWBN

  10. Ya just to follow up on the availability of BA Horror.

You have to look for it, collecting BA Horror is not for the lazy person. This is evident by checking out the wal books of most dealers, of which maybe and I mean maybe 5% is BA horror, more like 1-3%. Its all Spiderman, FF, Batman, X-men,Superman etc etc, plus whatever movie hype books are in Vogue.

I mean ppl give greggy a lot of slack, rightly so hi.gif but I'm pretty sure the DC's he turns up don't just fall from the sky - he has to go dig around a little and find them. In that respect collecting BA Horror is a bit like being a variant collector, not to the extreme that those wackos go but its got the same stature in the Hobby - IE outside the mainstream.

There is a little bit of exposure flying BA horror's way over the past year, culminated by Doug Sulipa's article in the OS - but even that article is a little self serving as Doug has a lot of BA Horror makepoint.gif The competition is starting to warm up a bit and the bandwagon a little less spacious, still in terms of the amount of general BA Horror books (outside the keys) that get slabbed, get mentioned as having broken a price record etc etc, still not a lot of activity relative to the mainstream titles.

The truth is out there - make sure you look for it and don't overpay.
  11. Every single larger Con I've been to recently and I'm not even talking about San Diego, has BA Horror in HG. You have to look because they are still thought of as an genre and obscure, though that is slightly changing but they are there.

Put it this way, at WonderCon I know for a fact that Pov - BassG and myself were going to specifically target these books and thats just three ppl I know personally. With that in mind all three of us still got at least 30 books in HG, heck I think Pov had close to 100. I too have noticed Ebay competition stiffening for BA horror, but at the last 3 major conventions I went to it was easy to find on the show floor - most ppl at the Cons still have superheroitis, are Marvel Zombies, or both.

  12. I actually bought a lot of books this week - 10 HG WWBN's 3 of the X-Men reprints I have been looking for and of course a few DC Horror book, but the one I liked the best was this copy of Crisis #1 I snagged for $5 at the LCS, my LCS rarely ever gets in any new books, but I was shooting the 893censored-thumb.gif with the owner about artists etc, they know I'm a big Perez fan so he tells me he got a few crisis books in - I have a look, the number 1 was - well Ill let the scan speak for itself cloud9.gif
