I finally got a HG copy of HOM 284 for starters

Hey Rip were you at the dinner, I wasn't even aware you were at Wonder, too bad would have been nice to chat about horror books, I know that Pov Sid and I had some cool conversations.

Well they are tough to find above VF and worse they are notoriously over graded by dealers. Though I do have a question because I've never subbed one, is CGC a little more lenient on the 100 pagers, I've heard it said that they are on magazines and was wondering if this extended to other larger squarebounds?

A special thank you to Pov & Sid for helping to dispel the myth that these are hard to find. A little patience & digging in the boxes is all it takes. Chronic overpayers like Greggy must be kicking themselves.

I agree with this BOC, except the 100 pagers, those are tough in HG, I didnt see all of Sid's haul, but I didnt see a HG 100 pager BA horror book in Pov's possession, I know I didnt get one. Between the 3 of us, I'm pretty sure we scoured the show floor pretty thouroughly for BA horror. Unless Ewert nabbed em on Thursday, or they changed hands between dealers.

I haven't done damage to one of my comics myself. Here's as close as I come...

I lent my best friend my brand new copy of Richie Rich Gold & Silver #1.

 

The next day I accidently broke his Green Ghost game. He got back at me by ripping the Richie Rich into tiny pieces and depositing them in my mailbox.

 

A few weeks ago, a 9.8 copy sold on eBay for over $500.

 

Should I bill him?

Botched tape removal attempt. Amazing Adventures #1. no, not the Bronze Age one. The OTHER one. It was a long time ago. It had tape on it and I tried to remove it. I learned the hard way that it's best to leave it on there. And looking back, I have no idea WHY I tried to remove it. I have other books with tape and didn't try to remove them.

 

Aaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh. Ah well. Live and learn.

Ya Tape removal definitely falls under the category of professionals attempt only. Please more stories to lessen my sob story. That Spidey 50 was a 9.0 cadidate prior to the TP.

Some tape pulls are hardly noticable.....

Can you say Tape Pull = Cover skin tear. I won't mention the book, still too painful. Yes FBB I know Thank you may I have another. I was transfering it to Mylar in the early 90s..........

I knew I would draw some heat for the post, but thats ok. I still think, if you remove your personal emotions on the issue Horror comics place in the comics heirarchy is easily apparent. Look I would love to say, Horror is the next huge thing, just like reality Television its going to be all-Horror all the time.

I'm also not argueing that Horror comics are going anywhere, they will always be there. I would love nothing more than to see Horror books Vault to the top of the OS Investment tables for SA and BA en mass, I own a lot of those books.

While its true super heros in the Atomic Age were secondary, that was a small blip on the radar. If you look at the discussion on these boards its pretty indicative of horror's place in Comicdom. There are numerous thread over this and that aspect of Superman, Batman, Wolverine, Avengers ETC ETC. Then there is the BA Horror thread. It is one of the longest and biggest single threads and I might add argueably the top pure collecting and information, scan posting all in one thread EVER. However, its still one tree in the Wilderness.

Look at WonderCon Pov and I will probably sit down and talk about Horror books for hours on end, or at least I hope so. I just think that the topic related to the how much potential, or legs the BA Horror stuff has can be a tad inflated around here. Many times on Ebay a lot of us bid against each other etc etc. So I still feel that Horror is a niche in the Comic lanscape, I happen to love the niche very much, but I have no illusions over it.

Ok, I'll take the other side of the fence on this one. I like the horror books as much as anyone and have a pretty decent run of HOM, HOS, TOD and WWBN. I bought my HOM #50 in VF when I was 17 and it was my favorite book for a long time. HOWEVER

Lets be realistic, horror comics are a sub-set to in the collecting marketplace. Some things to consider -

- Currently, Vertigo aside, there are no high profile horror books being published on a regular basis.

- HOM, HOS, TOD and WWBN argueably the most recognized BA horror books have been cancelled for like 20 + years. I don't think we are going to see a revamp of any one of these titles with a sustained commitment from the big 2.

- The lack of continuity problem. At least with the DC stuff there is / was no central character - sure you can argue the narrators (IE C & A) however and part of the reason I liked the stories so much was the single solid beginning / end format. But this aspect does limit or hinder the ability to attract new audiences.

- The rarity lessened. Pre-Code has a prepetual sustaining aspect tied to rarity. There are simply few books to collectors. So even though very very few new collectors may be attracted to Pre-Code the ratio will always remain in scarcitites favor.

All of these and I'm sure there are more factors limit the potential financial lucrative nature of the books. I think that horror especially the BA stuff has been overlooked for a number of years and that has been rectifying itself. HOWEVER, I do not think the margin for reconciliation is a large as many on this thread believe and that is of course tied to my and others affinity for the books.

A small example, consider the BA keys list that was hashed out again recently. How many horror books were on there? I think it was 3 and a lot of that has to do with an anomoly called Blade. All in all I think that the supply of BA horror - at least for the next decade will have absolutely no problem filling the demand. The only small caveat to that is the dark inks and abundance of darker coves which make certain issues tougher in uber HG. Hey I love the genre, but I also am careful to leave my rose colors on this thread when buying.

Now I'm starting to understand the Greggy animosity around here Man that sucker has awesome QP you bast.....

And as an aside, I have been a bit absent from the BA Horror as well but I love the latest crop of books. I am whetting my fangs for Wondercon!

Been on the look out for a bit

Ya, I'm a big fan of Bolland, Kaluta, Rogers and Englehart. The mini-hoard grows by 1-2 a year. It is a lot tougher than you think though, with the black cover and getting bounced around in the quarter bins. Plus this book is almost 25 years old.

Ya'll can take me to task for pulling the trigger on this and overpaying, but I love this book and wanted a HG example:

I need to upgrade my bought at a garage sale copy its the childhood reader and scared the bejeezes out of me when I was a kid - of course i read it often for that very reason.

I went to Dallas with two main books on my want list.

Well Hellblazer would start at the end of Copper, but for my money the creative teams from the first 200 issues (I have them all) rival anything that came out during the same time frame. Of course look at my Avatar but nonetheless for consistently great art and story JC Hellblazer is the way to go - just don't me off and talk about the thing coming out next year with what his face for the Matrix, I can't even say it. Set in LA - Oh the Horror (and not in a good way) of it all.

Shrunk and some of the other Pre-Code guys got me thinking of something. It kind of leads to the initial post on the difference betweeen Pre and BA Horror.

I went to 2 cons this year and witnessed the same exact scenerio at each - I will use WonderCon because the principles are know to us. Its mid afternoon on Saturday and a few of the forum members are sitting around the food court talking about the show and the forum dinner taking place that evening. I know that Garh, Pov and I were there for sure because that is the bulk of the conversation I was involved in - I think Supa was lurking .

So from my perspective it was a great show, I had a lot of books and good leads on some larger deals for Sunday - coincidentaly I has seen the HOM 174 Northland change hands and thought seriously about seeing if it would change hands again (this book recently sold on Ebay - the buyer will be happy as its a beautiful book, the seller should be over joyed at the price difference in 6 mo.) I had bought about 25 BA Horror books at this point and would Tally almost 40 for the weekend.

On the other hand Pov and Garth were talking about the lack of selection and how the show had gotten bigger but basically only 25% of their warchest came onto the floor- why, well because they collect PreCode and Barks / Disney from the AA respectively. Or that is the primary focus.

So from each perspective WonderCon varied in appeal greatly and I think this phenomenon is not isolated. Maybe its that the Pre-Coders have ventured into the BA realm, for if nothing else something to look forward to and collect while they wait for Pre-Code to turn up. So I guess we will have to welcome more of our PC brethern to the Dark Side of CCA Horror collecting, c'mon its not that bad.
