  1. Ha! I stand corrected.

$700+ for the Starr AND JESSE page that just ended on eBay.

Any guesses on the three CLink pages? Two feature Jesse, and the old one (issue 6) is particularly nice:

    Fixed that for you lol

Pretty strong result for that page, IMO. Maybe Starr is getting the respect he deserves (dare I say demands  ).

Not predictions on the CLink auction results, but I do predict a page a week on eBay like the good old days. This time around the starting prices aren't going to be $79.95, however, but $799.50

  2. That's silly. Of course he would sell his John Byrne cover (or whatever) for $10 mil.

We're talking about people within the hobby, getting the kind of offers that people within the hobby would realistically make.

If someone has a page worth $300 and he turns down $2k for it because he "doesn't sell his stuff," well that sounds like pretty close to a black hole to me.

  3. Man, that's a monster of a frame!

possible translation: "Good god, man! You are overwhelming the master's work with all that ornate golden gaudiness"

In this case, it's about how it looks in context. The prelim is pretty small, and I wanted to give it more weight on a busy wall. I'm very happy with how it's turning out. Will post a pic when its hung.

  4. It's all subjective and a matter of opinion to what "A level" is, in the eye of the beholder.

    Typically A Level would be:

    1) A Cover page

    2) A Double Page Splash page

    3) A Splash Page

    4) Feature a 1st appearance of a recurring character

    5) Feature one or more of the main characters

    6) Be a part of an important storyline, be it a turning point, death, revelation, etc.

...and for others the "A-Level" might be influenced by price, if getting a piece at a bargain, or the less collected "dialogue" factor.

This was a spinoff to an earlier thread regarding general pricing for "A-Level panel pages" from various series. In many cases a first appearance page might be considered A+, depending of course on the character and how good the page was.

  5. Here's one I won from Heritage a couple of years ago. Cursing, comedy, the word and the hero being heroic.

Moreso, I love the editorial notes (two places) instructing the letterer to make sure a certain expletive is written out on one line. It's the kind of not-published gem that makes OA special.

An "A" page? For me it is.

  6. Situation does slightly remind me of when Sal took over selling Sienkiewicz' artwork all those years back (any idea? Mitch?).

Prices tripled overnight from the market value for all the inventory he took from Bill (Stray Toasters pages, leftover New Mutants pages...) which had been sitting untouched for a while (Elektra pages were long gone).

People laughed and scoffed and said he would be stuck with them forever. I have to say though, I think the New Mutants pages he has sitting there are finally worth (ballpark) what he priced them at way back at the time.

  7. I think part of the reason people's jaws are dropping is that many fans from the 90s know him as the guy who took over drawing Spawn when McFarlane left. Fair or not, he gets lumped in with Klaus Janson (DD), Erik Larsen (ASM), Art Thibert, Whilce Portico (X-Men), Sal Buscema (Thor) as 'replacement artists' fans got stuck with after the fan-favorite left a historic run (Miller, McFarlane, Lee, Simonson)

  8. On the other hand, I tend to think that a digital overlay of word bubbles would be perfectly fine if you want to enhance a digital-bubble page.

On anything costing over a grand, this is an easy no-brainer solution. Have your cake and eat it too :)

Those are good points. (I'm used to these things being >$300 pages)

  9. In my opinion, the big thing Preacher has going for it is the word balloons.

Preacher, Fables, Y... none are books with fan-favorite artists. Prices are escalating because of the stories/writers, not because Steve Dillon or Pia Guerra drew them.

Same actually goes for Dave Gibbons. If you just want something he did a great job of drawing, you can find a page for a couple hundred bucks. Want a nice page from Watchmen or the Superman story? Multiply that couple hundred bucks X 100.

Which brings us back to Preacher: I think the fact that the pages all have their balloons on them directly translates to increased nostalgia for the moments depicted, which of course means they will do better over the long run than Y or Fables.

    (just my 2¢ of course)
