As you hunt for the right copy to spend thousand of dollars on, what comic book flaws are most problematic? If it is a 7.0 grade then isn’t it the same as the next 7.0 grade? I’m certain the answer is “no”, but I need time to learn about such pros and cons. The below article was helpful. Curious if others care to comment about this issue. https://artfulinvestments.com/comic-book-grading/

It’s all personal preference, the same technical grade can have vastly varying degrees of eye appeal. For example a 7.0, would you prefer a big 1 inch visible crease vs an accumulation of tiny spine ticks? Or a barely visible stain on the back cover vs a tear on the inside?…

An interesting book with a great cover; but I've never been too interested in buying what is basically a reprint book at the substantial price it brings. I'm a Barks guy and this issue doesn't do too much for me. Early WDC&S are more appealing to me in the non-Barks realm due to the variety of work in those issues and oft times relative affordability. Good luck in the search though.

    I’m an OCD completist 😭

@dikran1 I agree with your first one. I don't use GPA (GC guy) and I have no interest in the registry. I can be involved in the chat boards without using CGC (well, technically, I'd be using CGC, but you know what I mean). Got anything else?

I think number 1 is pretty much all that matters… but once the gap starts to close all bets are off. I honestly don’t know why GPA doesn’t track sales of the other grading companies but it remains the closest thing to determining a “fair market value”. The registry is pretty much a throwback to when this hobby was about collecting runs rather than just keys, I enjoy seeing some of the insane collections. Flex, before it was a thing on YouTube 😂

Ahhh census numbers. So huge for some books. How many raw copies of these books are still out there? The prints runs on books from late 60s on were enormous, and only increased before that bubble almost popped for good in the 90s.

Incredible Hulk 181 (1974)-15,262 slabbed copies total, 2851 with the number grade 9.0-9.6, 144 in 9.8 and above.

Werewolf By Night 32 (1975)-4422 slabbed copies total, 957 in 9.0-9.6, 19 in 9.8 and above.

    Amazing Spider-Man 300 (1988)-28,149 slabbed copies total, 16,790 in 9.0-9.6, 1526 in 9.8 and above.

New Mutants 98 (1991)-22,848 slabbed copies total, 14,532 in 9.0-9.6, 4253 in 9.8 and above.

My point is that paying increasing amounts of nosebleed money for a number that represents a subjective grade on a comic holder is not going to have a good ending. How many ticks on a cover separate a 9.0 from a 9.8.? How many "should be"  9.4s do you see graded as 9.8s? Then throw in the spec rumors firing up any given first appearance of any tier 5 character/villain that noone gave two FFs about the week before, with all copies of said book disappearing overnight from ebay and other vendors. Rinse. Repeat. Insanity. [My opinion-spend your time and money any way you like if it lets you enjoy the hobby] :)

I’m just saying the “9.8” game is a whole lot different nowadays than the “readily available in high grade” game. Am I gonna spend time (almost a year at CGC) and money to buy and submit 10, 20, 30, 100 (???) raw copies of a book before I get my coveted 9.8? That’s the mentality when high end collectors or speculators/investors enter our hobby. Is it here to stay? Probably not, but all I can say is we do us and let them do them. If someone wants to pay me 4-5 digits for one of my run filler SA/BA 9.8s I picked up for peanuts 15 years ago, who am I to complain?

7.5 that crease on the back along with all the spine nicks to me drops it below an 8 unfortunately ..but who knows!

Yeah, I was debating between 7.0 - 7.5 - 8.0... had the crease been an inch long I'd be firmly in the 7.5 with the spine ticks. But we shall see... Kinda tough to set an FMV when there aren't too many sales. Guess I'll send it Express tier with a press and hope for an 8.5

I've been using GoCollect. In 2020 3 FF52s (9.2) were purchased for over $13k. Those purchases must have driven up the avg? Is GoCollect legit??? I'm sure 9.2 grades are hard to come by. Some of the other buyer sources have current higher grades (9.0 and above) priced way more than $5k.  It seems the are only a hundred or so books graded higher than 9.0. So I'm certainly not aiming so high. But... it's ok to dream a little! It feels like I need to get better at researching price and sourcing. Still learning!

If you are serious about the pricing aspect, I would strongly suggest getting a GPA subscription. It’s not perfect by any means but will give you a lot of up to the minute info on sales from lots of sources: Heritage, eBay, Metropolis, Mycomicshop... Just not from Comiclink…

True story right here: I took my son, Chase, to his golf lessons while watching a YouTube focused on FF keys (he was holding the phone). Chase really likes Black Panther and FF 52 was being reviewed w/ favor. It’s now on my list! Now to my point: 10 minutes ago I spoke w/ my eldest daughter, Tessa, and she is a big Loki fan: Thanks to your post JIM 85 is now on my list too! I’ve joined GoCollect and find myself tooling through a Key Collector app, but your post was timely!

Either the budget for this effort will increase or I’ll settle for the lower grades. I’m not ready to pull triggers just yet as confidence is not yet there. Getting there though.

doh! »Forgot all about FF52 :roflmao:
