Heritage making a killing, the sellers not so much…

The FC 178 9.6 sold again for 90k… so assuming the book hadn’t been sold privately in between auctions, HA made 45,000$ on the same book and the seller lost 22,500$… How does one go about opening an auction house?… 🤔

If a dealer bought inventory in the last couple years even at 30-40% of 2020-1 “FMV”, he’s probably underwater right now in terms of current auction prices on those books. As many dealers have told me, you can pay me a little more right now or go battle it out with 50 other people on the auction sites and hope you win.

I’m all for steady yearly growth like in the coin market, but we need new readers who turn into collectors who turn into investors in the future and if kids today are buying books at 4$ cover prices with no hope any of them will be collectible in the future, what’s the point?

Well, what else would drive demand for a comic nowadays if not for other media?… You can make the, I don’t know… Serpent Society the big bad in the next big Marvel crossover event and no one would care but if there’s movie/TV buzz, hang on to your hats cuz the YouTubers and the Key Collectors will be all over it…

I'm pretty much done with CGC (and slabbing in general) have 4 Economy orders in limbo and once I get those back in 2023-4, it's time to liquidate and retire. I've gotten so many random 7.5 - 8.5 moderns with some imperceptible stain or crease visible only through full spectrum lighting that I've given up the 9.8 lottery. Better to sell raw as an ''eBay NM''

Way things are going for comics & the MCU, you should hope he never makes it to the MCU...

He took a bath on a few on his Disney Duck books though, a market I follow very closely. A few upgrades didn’t pan out so well for him.

Some more big Duck books coming in Heritage auctions in the next couple weeks, FC 178 8.5 & 9.6 are the ones I’m most interested in result-wise.

So now that movies seem to negatively impact comics (Sub-Mariner, Riri...) and all the sports card and crypto bros have cashed out, what is the next catalyst that will positively impact comics?

No clue how people can sleep at night with so much cash tied up in comic books... Glad I don't play in that rarified air anymore...

It’s my actual name, which is a common Armenian first name. Had to add the 1 after some Board update in 2017 but I’ve been on here since ‘07. As for the bad?… Buying comics today is essentially like buying a new car, you lose 40-50% of the value as soon as the auction ends…

Basically what I meant was are we all not comic collectors? We pretty much know who the A-B list characters are and where they first appeared. Their relevance shouldn’t be effected by whether or not they appear in a show or video game but rather their relevance within the hobby itself. Literally NO ONE who isn’t already in the hobby is seeing these movies and saying “darn it, I need to get me whatever that Thor guy’s first comic is”… right? So who exactly is this “movie hype” for if not just ourselves?… just utter nonsense…

Maybe it’s just me but I still don’t see the logic of a movie or other media increasing the price of a comic… movies and TV shows about these characters have existed long before most of us were born, it’s all nonsense.
