  1. Okay time to give the Conan thread its periodic Well, as everyone knows, the first Conan prototype in comics was the Starr the Slayer story by BWS in Chamber of Darkness 4 (April 1970)..... or was it? Two decades earlier, in June 1950, Avon published a one-shot SF/fantasy comic called Out of This World. This is a tough book to find, a Gerber 8, but it is notable for containing what OSPG considers the first "sword and sorcery" story in comics. This story is a none-too-subtle knock-off of Conan called "Crom the Barbarian." It is drawn by Frazetta mentor John Giunta and written by none other than Gardner F. Fox, who must have been a reader of REH's stories in Weird Tales. I posted this story in thw GA forum a couple of years ago, but I thought some of you in General might like to read it as well. Enjoy!
  2. BB and Scrooge, you guys have been posting some great books!

  6. what is that? First REH Weird Tales? First appearance of Conan (in "The Phoenix on the Sword") Grail of Grails for a Conan/REH collector You know I haven't seen a comprehensive list anywhere of all of REH's publications. I'll try and put one together and post it in this thread - it would be useful for me as well. The Weird Tales stories are faily easy to list, but some of his work in other pulps like Oriental Stories, Golden Fleece, Fight Stories, etc. might be more difficult. Skull-Face and Others was published by Arkham House in 1946. It's the first REH book that is actually accessible to collectors. A Gent from Bear Creek was published in book form in the UK in late 30s, but only 5 or 6 copies are known to exist, and half of those are in library collections. Edit: Here is useful article originally published in Firsts magazine on collecting Howard first editions: http://www.donherron.com/collect_reh.html
  7. No kidding? That's cool! These are a little late for the GA forum, but this seems like an appropriate place to put them. A couple of British digests from 1961-62 with Elric stories. The 47 is the first appearance of Elric in print. And here is the first Elric book from 1962, UK true first edition, first state, unclipped dj.
  8. Later in 1962, the first Elric book The Stealer of Souls was released. This is the true UK first edition. The unsold copies of this print run were shipped to the US with the shilling price clipped from the dj and replaced with a price sticker in US$ and the name of the US publisher stamped on the title page. Because of this, the original unstamped, unclipped UK version is fairly scarce.
  9. Earlier in this thread we had an fun Elric/Moorcock discussion so I thought I'd post a few cool recent Elric related arrivals. Elric first appeared in print in 1961 in issue 47 of the British digest Science Fantasy: Another early Elric cover/story from early 1962:
  10. Wow! That is an incredible copy! That red spine is sweet!
  11. Pulps definitely seem to bring in more on the auction sites as opposed to ebay. A much nicer copy than this one went for $500-600 a few months ago on ebay and I really wish I had gone after it, but I was tapped at the time. This issue and other key pulps have really done well at heritage the last few years. It's great to see Clink getting in on the pulp action. On a related note, I was surprised to see that 1927 Amazing Stories Annual didn't make reserve. That is a super rare book.
  12. Great run! And welcome to the boards! (thumbs u Jeff
  13. Nice pick up! I did put in what I thought was a conservative but realistic bid on the Weird Tales, but got beat out by a good margin. I was surprised at what it went for actually, with the tape and trimming.
  14. Still getting caught up in this thread after being gone for a few weeks. Love the Oriental Stories and Magic Carpets! I'm just now on the Superman letter and the link to the lawsuit documents - this looks like it's going to be good!
  15. I've never heard of these either - looks like a fun book. Is it science fiction?
