  1. Keep looking. I spotted this one almost by accident.
  2. Another DC war bonds cover. DC, Fawcett and Dell were the biggest supporters of the bonds drives on their covers.
  3. You all need to get out more. Here's another newly-arrived DC war bonds book to play 'spot the defect' on. From the Esquire Comics More Fun collection, now cracked free of its tomb.
  4. Already done. I hadn't noticed it until I posted the scan. I changed the scan above so no-one will know what Duffman is on about.
  5. On an otherwise pretty unedifying day, this landed on my desk yesterday. I've wanted this book for my war bonds collection for a very long time. If I had to nominate 'classic war bonds covers', this one and Batman #17 would be on the shortlist. A big thank you to Jamie from SoCal Comics.
  6. I've wanted one of these for a very long time but never found the right $/eye appeal ratio - until now.
  7. Meanwhile, deep in the state of denial... I am going to press on as if nothing happened today. Ed Doe also sent me this gem, beautifully packed and presented as always. The arrival of this book brought to an end a quest that began in June 2008 with the purchase of Weird Fantasy #17. This is #14(2). Group shot to follow some time on the weekend. Thanks Ed!
  8. OK, let me get this one out of the way. The Inner Completist has been at me again, this time to finish off the Mad 1-23 run, which meant I had to buy this: I know this book has an important role in the development of comic art, being the inspiration for a young Robert Crumb (who I do have time for). But to me it's a case of 'a Wolverton drawing of an ugly woman!' To be fair, there's some fun stuff in Mad #11 (even if there are six - count 'em - more pages of Wolverton charicatures in there as well). Wood's Flesh Garden is my favourite: The seller*, who knew my opinion of the Mad cover and is obviously a sadist, decided to include a freebie with the purchase. What did he choose...? You guessed it - a book with TWO Wolverton ugly women on the cover. OK, I deserved that. There were also a few books from the same source that I was much more excited about. Next time for those. *I'll let him be anonymous. Let's just call him 'Ed Doe', or perhaps 'John Owens'.
  9. Great guy to sell a book to - paid fast and communicated clearly.
  10. Friday was a good day - not only did it foreshadow the weekend, but a big box o' comicy goodness landed on my desk during the day. A big shout out to Point Five for this - he has allowed comics I've bought from States based sellers to accumulate at his place all year, then bundled them up and sent them in one wonderful package. Thanks Jon - you're good people! Let me start slowly with this one. The last of the Gyro Four Colors (stricly this is a 'missing' Four Color, but the indicia shows that it's #1329): Much more to follow ...
  11. Duffman: overthinking comic books on the boards since 2006. Tell you what: I'll read the story tonight and let you know what's going on.
  12. This one is only barely out of register, but it makes me feel like looking for my glasses...
  13. Another day, another Australian Fiction House reprint. This one features a (probably locally drawn) cover with... err... I'm not entirely sure, but it has a helicopter and nude dude on a zebra, so there's that. I can't wait to read this one and find out WTH is going on there! Like the amps in Spinal Tap, the Australian run of Wings went to 11, though #11 seems to have been a straight reprint of #8! That's not too unusual for Australian comics of the time - seems to have been a case of 'grab what's handy and print it'!
  14. Agreed Harry, that issue hasn't got a lot going for it. But there's an interesting oddity on the cover. I've always wondered how that mortar shell going down the tube the wrong way turned out...
  15. MCS has 25c and 30c variants in stock. They list the 30c much higher in value ($57 vs $11 in 2.0).
  16. OK, back to the Australian Golden Age comics now. Until three weeks ago I didn't know there was at least one Australian issue of Captain Science. It doesn't appear on the Oz reprints site, and I can't recall ever seeing one. This one is via eBay Canada. This is #1, with the cover from the US #2. I'm coming to appreciate the black and white interiors, especially in the oversize issues. The art work is easier to appreciate without the often muddy four colours of the time.
  17. Also wouldn't look out of place on a Grateful Dead album!
  18. I'm not sure if the Gladstone Snow White book is the same one. I'll pull mine out and have a look later. My memory is that it has some lovely artwork in it. Edit: it reprints Four Color #49
  19. Great stuff Harry. I really like your approach to your journal. I'll admit to not being a big fan of the FF, but you made me want to read this one!
  20. That's a really nicely composed splash panel.
  21. Did somebody say 'nice copy of DD 26'?
  22. Here's a couple: Gyro Gearloose in WDC&S 140 (and his lightbulb helper in Uncle Scrooge 15) Gladstone Gander in WDC&S 88 You can find all of the Disney first appearences at the Inducks site!
