  1. There's a list of previous issues at the back of each. The HRN is simply the highest number in that list. Let's say you have Ivanhoe (Book #2) and the list on the back goes up to 136. Lord Jim, then you have Ivanhoe #2, HRN 136. i.e. this book.
  2. I took a deep breath and paid what I thought was 'top dollar +' for these from worldwide Comics. I needn't have worried - these are lovely books, conservatively graded and I couldn't be happier with them. With these I'm getting near to finishing off the 15 issue run. Davis, Wood, Toth and Evans - what's not to like?
  3. Check out the pulps thread in the GA section. Lots of knowledgeable folk there.
  4. Maybe not 'high grade' but that copy has tons of eye appeal.
  5. Love that Earth Man on Venus cover - great book! Here's a very nice copy of an Australian reprint of Tracy I picked up recently.
  6. Something a bit different - here's an Australian Fiction House reprint. Like many Australian comics of the time, it's an odd mix of material - two stories reprinted from Jungle Comics (one Kaanga story) and a story from Jet Aces #4. Looking at the cover art, I think it was either traced from an internal panel or redrawn by a local artist. It's not the cover from any FH Kaanga or Jungle. Again that's not too unusual. No date on this one but the jet Aces story says 1954 or later. Finally, I have no idea why it's a 'special'. It has the standard 24 pages and b&w interior.
  7. I don't usually quote images, but I'll make an exception for the first Barks in WDC&S.
  8. While we're in the Atom Age, here's a new one of mine:
  9. Got a couple of new Wings in, courtesy of Alanna (and my wallet):
  10. Thanks, and I'm watching it now, but I have to say that 'buy the book, not the label' might apply on this one. I have 6.0s with much better eye appeal.
  11. hey, tb, I cost you some extra $$ on that WDC&S #40 - I was the underbidder. I was out having coffee with my wife and didn't get back in time for the live auction (Sunday morning here), only to find I'd been 'sniped'. Good luck to you - but if you see a nice 6.0 or 7.0 on your travels, let me know. (thumbs u
  12. I find the number of different ways to approach collecting fascinating. I'll upgrade from a 4.0 to an 8.0, but I can't imagine ever seeing upgrading an already high-grade book to an even higher one to be more attractive than buying another book I don't have. Other collectors would stick with the 4.0 and buy something else. The beauty of it of course is that it means there's something for us all to chase. P.S. It's awfully hard to argue with tb's choice - those are some lovely books.
  13. The hand is right because we're looking at the back of it. I think the problem is the elbow bend. Try putting your arm in that pose - it's possible but not something you'd do naturally. (Well, not if you have my right elbow anyway.)
  14. Picked this up in today's Heritage auction. I'll post it again once it arrives and has been released from its tomb.
  15. Welcome aboard Bart! As a long time aviation geek and model builder, one of the things I find interesting about Wings is the range of accuracy with which the aircraft are drawn. Some are pretty mediocre - the Avenger torpedo bomber on one of your others, for example. But sometimes they are really well done. This drawing of the back end of a B-17 is one of my favourites. The P-51 with the bird feathers is also pretty good (if you ignore the paintwork ).
  16. Since tb mentioned the 'over 100' issues, I thought I'd post these - just for fun. A fun cover by Kelly and a classic Barks: I hadn't looked at these for a while, so thanks for the prompt tb.
  17. Thanks tb. I already have nice copies of a few of those. 108 is one of my absolute favorites and I bought one a few years back. I have toyed with the idea of 'up to the end of Walt Kelly'. I plan to live for a while yet, so we'll see.
  18. Back from the stratosphere that is the tb collection, here's a very presentable WDC&S #100 I picked up on eBay for an agreeable price. It is now safe to take off your sunglasses. With this one I have #66 - #100 complete. If I can find 64 and 65 I'll have #55 up done with only a couple under Fine. Gettin' there...
  19. Thank you so much for all those titles, but what i meant to say was,any books on Carl Barks himself and his work at Disney ? Reading comprehension fail. There's a lot of good background material, interviews etc. in the Another Rainbow Carl Barks Library hardcovers. Of course, a 30 volume set is probably not the place to start. Barrier's book (title escapes me right now) isn't too bad either, although half of it is a checklist.
