  1. That's no lady, that's.... oh, never mind. OK, what's with the 'fan in the groin'?
  2. Scrooge is asking and answering his own esoterica questions now. But that is one weird image to make its way to the cover of a comic book. Seriously, what's with the 'fan where his *spoon* should be'?
  3. Congrats Mark, nice looking copy for the grade. +1 - and what a thrill it is to get a book you've wanted for so long. When I was 8 years old I loved the Australian editions of the Barks Scrooge comics. I was 25 when I found my first Dell copy (#12) in Lee's comics in Palo Alto. I was so excited to buy it, so I know how you feel.
  4. Worth watching. Interesting that he mentions Frank Miller Dark Knight #1 being worth $30 back then as a good investment. Does anybody know what the book value of it is now? $65 in NM, according to OS. Or just over $36 in 1986 money. Score!
  5. If you only bought one of each it would go faster. Only kidding - what a lovely group of comics!
  6. I got these recently from boardies - great stuff. (And thanks guys!)
  7. Montrealfilmguy: Your Dell books just look to have an uneven factory cut. It isn't unusual for the top edge to be a bit higher or lower than 'usual' due to printing. Here's a fun Four Color I picked up recently. I like the single bold colour with relatively simple artwork that a lot of Dells had: I'd love to find nice copies of the other Dell Peanuts issues if anyone has a lead on some.
  8. An eBay VF. It's still a pretty nice book (and I didn't even pay the VG price, so all's good).
  9. Finally joined a club I've wanted in on for some time... That's right - covers with P-40s on them.
  10. That Captain Midnight is really nice Speedy.
  11. I tried to make the Star Trek reference back on page 2, but either no one got it, or it wasn't funny. I'm guessing the latter. I got it, and thought it was funny. But there were forty more posts by the time I saw it. You were just before your time.
  12. Here's a 1947 Australian edition of Four Color #29: and here it is beside a normal Dell issue for a size comparison:
  13. Flickus flackus fumdeedledum, which means 'to the true collector goes the nicest books'.
  14. Allow me to be the first. I love my Uncle Scrooge #60 signed by the good duck artist.
  15. One of my wife's favourites. She calls it the 'OMG cover'.
  16. Mine has a similar but smaller tear:
  17. Sure, here's the inside front cover spread: The Dell has a poster advertising 'three big stories' on the inside cover. This edition doesn't have the 'too many pets' story, and includes a couple of Taliafero dailies instead. And here's the centrefold (which, like colour, is also mispelled ): A couple of odd things. Comparing the page with the Barks Library, the last panel is missing the text 'But that night the wind dies and for hours the boat drifts helplessly back down the river'. The box in panel three should have the text 'No one tends the rudder while they gape at ruins along the bank'. There's no reason for those changes, and no other text in the comic is missing - I think this was just a mistake. Sometimes Australian editions had changes of text for local audiences (dollars to pounds, or rutabagas to swedes or turnips - I don't recall which - in the dinosaur valley story). Sometimes one or more pages were removed to fit the local format, requiring a bit of rewriting. And I have some books where an extra 'u' was literally cut and pasted into words like 'neighbour' to turn them into English. I haven't looked inside this book for three years now, and at the time I noted 'rust on staple with some migration - monitor this'. At the time I wasn't sure what I thought of conservation and restoration. I am now, and this staple will be coming out for cleaning and either returned (my preference) or replaced.
  18. You utter trollop. Nice one Peter - great book!
  19. I've posted this scan before to show off this very cool 1947 Australian edition: But I realise I haven't posted anything that shows the size of it, which is its coolest aspect. So, by popular demand (I was asked once, which is all the encouragement I need), here's a shot with a standard size Dell:
  20. With these ones I have 10 of the 15 in this fabulous run.
  21. I posted a WTB listing - I'm in the market for a midgrade Batman 30, or a Batman 17 or Action 58 at the right combination of price and eye appeal for my War Bonds collection.
