  1. I agree. It looks good, but the comics didn't work for me.
  2. That's true. It wasn't the best decade for comics, but it wasn't all bad.
  3. I don’t think there’s much artwork that I actively ‘hate’. There’s quite a bit out there that I really couldn’t care less about, though, and Liefeld’s style simply doesn’t do anything for me. Served cold in my case, I guess.
  4. I'll be honest, I never did either at the time. But, I gave up paying any real attention after X-Force 1.
  5. Heavily armoured protection, I believe. Sure I’ve seen ricochets in the comics.
  6. Thanks for showing me that. It gives me a better understanding about why the process appealed to some readers but not to others, like myself. "More colourful, brighter", in my case, translates to "too loud". I tend to prefer a more subdued presentation than you got with flexography, a bit like my TV settings.
  7. Very saddened to see a really excellent comic artist, John Paul Leon, died of cancer, at 49. Always liked his work, right from his early days on Milestone's Static series, and then Earth X, Challengers of the Unknown, and X-Men. A year ago, completely missed this.
  8. Tales of the Unexpected 16, 1957 Venus 6, first Marvel Loki, 1949
  9. I wouldn’t be happy seeing an Uncanny Valley version of him, as with Princess Leia in that same film. Even worse than the Grand Moff.
  10. Cyborg FOOM Wolverine vs the Legion of Super-Heroes’ Timber Wolf. As far as influence goes, no real contest.
  11. I apologise. Anyone could see immediately from the results of the Flexographic process, from a single comic book, that it looked absolutely hideous compared to conventional printing, and it’s hard to see why they bothered with it for so long.
  12. Looking back, the newsprint quality in the late 70s was quite poor; dull, grey, and didn’t do justice to the artwork, which often looks much, much better in recent, remastered form.
  13. The time of the horrible experiment with garish Flexographic printing.
  14. I'd find it very hard to single out just one Golden Age Spirit Section "cover" / first page, as Eisner created so many with such inspired design sense, and then there are some equally impressive Warren magazine covers to account for as well. I give up. He was a comic book genius.
  15. That would've been the other choice for me, but I don't like EC's cover layout, and the way Williamson's art has been compressed. Great books.
  16. The problem with the Flash Gordon covers is that, as superbly drawn as some of them are, they follow much the same formula, with similar embellishments to his classic work on EC’s “Food for Thought” story.
  17. Mac Raboy Love the intimidating, militarised "V" in the background. Simple, but brilliantly effective.
  18. Al Williamson Inked by Frazetta, but it's clearly Williamson, and one of his best.
  19. I agree. Under-appreciated gem of a series.
  20. I believe so. Poorly-managed Type 1 Diabetes.
  21. Very sad news. I completely missed that.
