Again, I don't have a lot of mine scanned yet, but here are a few. I absolutely LOVE this run of covers. I consider these books to be the pinnacle of the early Golden Age.
Win that is a beautiful #24. The pages look bone white. Is it a pedigree?
-
Very interesting article, Jon. Chesler books are truly unique, having some of the most grotesque and risque covers of the era. Someone should start a Chesler thread . . .

Well, let's see (putting detective cap on)...Berk owns the Mile High, a buddy of mine has the Larson, I own the Nova Scotia so it's...it's....Allentown?
(OK I cheated, I see the Allntwn in the image code).
She's a real beauty...
STEVE Got Larson?
Darn image codes.

Steve, all I can say is WOW!!

Another Centaur not seen very often (not that any of them are...)
STEVE
Got Larson?
You're right, I have not seen that one before. Very nice.
-
It looks like the very same girl with the same expression as the girl on the cover of SeanK's #8.
-
Congratulations tb. That's a one-of-a-kind beauty!

From Comiclink
That's a beautiful book. Whoever did the restoration did a nice job.

This is my favorite of the Maurice Whitman Fiction House covers.

That is a GREAT Golden Age cover!

Neat book. I've never seen it before either. Looks better than an 8.0.
-
You're not selling these books are you?
Unfortunately, I am. Except for the FC 178, which I`m keeping.
Tim, are you getting out of the hobby??
Outstanding group of duck books by the way.

What is the "More Fun Collection"? Can you provide some background on that Centaurman?

Hi Rarehighgrade, just my 2 cents worth, but the Tech 19 cover does look like a dead ringer for Flessel. Look at those buildings in the background, the heavy shadowing in the artwork.
Thanks for your thoughts steelhelmet. I have always wondered about the #19 because it has a "noire" feel to it that is different from Flessel's other covers. If anyone else has any info/opinion about this, I would love to hear it.
Here is Detective #19, for those who are not familiar with it:
-
You are right Jon, those are great covers. I have never really noticed or appreciated them before now.
-
The article states:
"Following Sullivan's pencils and inks of Chin Lung for cover 1, Creig Flessel became regular cover artist for the subsequent eighteen issues."
Does this mean that Flessel did the cover to Detective #19? The GCD is uncertain as to the artist for that cover, questioning whether it could be O'Mealia.
-
Adam, when you are done using your time machine, can I borrow it?
-
Someone should start a thread that focuses on early Fox covers. I don't think we've had one like that yet.
-
Did Disney censor Bark's "Race to the South Seas" (March of Comics #41) in subsequent reprints? I thought they only censored "Darkest Africa" (March of Comics #20).
-
Bat-Hound, your Detective group shot reminds me of the Metropolis booth at conventions: multiple copies of key and scarce books, making them all seem common.
-
Its all about Detective 1, 12 and 15
Jbud, I like #12 too, but haven't heard many people single it out. Tell us what it is about that cover that makes it one of your favorites.
-
Jon,
Did you ever ask Flessel about Detective Comics #18? I know you own the recreation of the cover by Flessel, but GCD has O'Mealia listed as the artist for some reason. I know this seems like a silly question when you've got the Flessel recreation, but can you confirm that Detective Comics #18 is in fact a Flessel cover?
Scott, I am fairly certain that Detective #18 is, in fact, O'Mealia. The character is from one of O'Mealia's strips, the detailed art is definitely O'Mealia's style, and O'Mealia did several of the subsequent pre-hero Tec covers. But then again, maybe we will find out from Jon that this was Flessel aping O'Mealia.

The first six issues of New Comics, like the first few issues of More/New Fun, are on unglossed paper stock. Therefore, they all have a greater tendency to fade. It is rare to find one with rich colors like your More Fun #7. For some reason, the #5 experiences more fading/discoloring than any other issue. I don't know why.
