  1. Maybe this high price may bring a few more 5.0's or 6.0's out. I think $15000-20000 for the 8.0 Mound City copy looks reasonable now. Define "reasonable"! This book is currently driven by supply and demand. Collectors now recognizes that SC 22 page quality is normally crm/ow. This particular 5.5 has off-white pages, and as detective27kid said " On sc22 pq is a big deal if you are looking for a separating quality over other copies". This copy deserves a premium...but $3803.64??? Regarding the Mound City 8.0, this is the only publicly high grade copy available for sale and the rest is tucked away in collections. Below are examples of other notable Silver Age keys sales which I have mentioned before. Let's use BB 28 and Avengers 1 as a comparison. The 3rd highest graded BB 28 (which there is five) sold in Comiclink for $21000. Also, let's use Avengers 1 as a comparison. A 8.0 (5th highest and 23 copies) sold in CL for $26000 and a 9.0 (4th highest and ten copies) for $20000 again in CL. Showcase 22 is in high demand and there are less high grade copies available compare to their counterparts. I wouldn't argue that the price is unreasonable given the market. I'm just saying that the market is not being driven by reason, or at least by anything reasonable related to appreciation of comics. Call it irrational exhuberance! I would say that prices are being driven by demand, not supply. The supply a year or two ago was the same as it is today (actually less, because copies are coming out of the woodwork now). So why is the price suddenly going up? Because demand has gone crazy. And why has demand gone crazy? Because of pure speculation. People want to get a copy to invest in hoped for profits down the road (or maybe next week). I do agree...it's irrational exuberance! This SC 22 5.5 sold for double what a BB28 in 5.5 and one and a half time a Avengers 1 in 5.5. At this rate it is the second most valued DC Silver Age comic and this is not based on OSPG prices. Also, the data that Peewee22, the help with others, and I collected confirms the supply and the scarcity of higher grade copies. (thumbs u SC #22 should is the second most important DC SA key behind #4 in my opinion. B&B #28 is nice, but it is basically an earlier version of Avengers #1.
  2. Wow....that is high to me....Rick, (Detective27) what do you think? I have a strong "feeling" as to where the price both "should" go, and "might" end up... however, I have found from past experience that when I am an active participant , I should keep my cards "close to me" I'll say this much. I think this book, and this book alone, will be the preamble for HG 22s to come over the years... Uh oh, if Rick is in the house then the rest of us might as well forget about chasing it.
  3. Descent reading copy. Can't just own only one copy...some members in this club have a second copy...third copy...fourth copy so far. Some of us peon collectors only have ONE copy... I guess it's the definition of quantities or qualities. It's nice to have more than one copy, but attaining a high grade copy will be satisfying for most people. (thumbs u peewee22 has a very nice copy now, I believe. (thumbs u
  4. In case anyone is wondering about the CGC 5.5 copy on eBay, I asked the seller whether it had been pressed and here is his response: "Not to my knowledge, I purchased it already graded and in the CGC case. I would be happy to send you whatever angle/picture you would like. Or let me know if there is something you would like me to look for in particular and I will."
  5. Descent reading copy. Can't just own only one copy...some members in this club have a second copy...third copy...fourth copy so far. Some of us peon collectors only have ONE copy... It really doesn't count if you only have one copy............
  6. lots of time left in that auction...it should break $3k... i know i havent bid in a few days...just waiting.... I am not as certain now as I was after the first 24 hours. While it is a hot book, if you look at GPA prices (last 5.5 was $1434 in Nov 2008) and the last noted 6.0 going for $3500 (or something like that) then the market for 5.5s might not be at that level, yet. It will be there next year provided the economy does not tank again (a small pull back would be okay), but here's hoping the prices stay down until next summer so we can load up on a few more copies. (thumbs u BTW, it was interesting to note that a friend who works at my LCS last night (he is a GL collector as well) mentioned that the movie delay/$$ troubles might hamper demand for GL books a bit right now. I wonder if this will have any impact or not. Although none of us are experts in the field of crystal-balling, we've been awake in this biz long enough to safely say that a nice SC 22 is a great long term investment and more important, fun to own. I'm 48 and (had) been chasing one since the 70s. The census report that Rich did confirms this: it's rare, a major character intro, a '59 issue, and low qual PQ. There are 9.2 - 9.6s of the other SA keys available. Some of the Boardies own these (wish I were one). There is no KNOWN copy > 9.0 of S22. It is the rarest SA key. I'll rack up all I can get (within financial reason and whatever Rick leaves for scraps). The 5.5 on ebay is just a tad short of what we call the nice ones (6.0 and up). But it is nice. The movie, to me, helps 22s surface that normally would not. (thumbs u Showcase 22's 50th birthday this month. Happy Birthday Hal Jordan!!! Err - I once had a Showcase #22 with a July date stamp - so a little late on the Birthday wishes. Thanks for pointing this out. You are right, I have done research and found some date stamp copies with July on it. SC 22 was release in 07/59. If we use the date listed on the first page of the comic which is 9-10/59, then it will be the 50th. Heck! Let's celebrate it for the whole 2009. Green Lantern Hal Jordan high lights for this year: Ryan Reynolds cast as GL Green Lantern First Flight release Green Lantern major comic story line Record price for CGC 7.5 $10500 Record price for CGC 5.5 Mound City CGC 8.0 surface Mound City CGC 8.0 sets record price for 8.0??? will a CGC 9.2 surface??? GL movie looses financing GL movie canceled Surplus of Showcase #22's and decrease in demand in the marketplace causes price to tank. Updated that for ya! I used Rip Hunter's time maching to look few months into the future... How many NM copies of SC #22 did you snag off the stand while you were there?
  7. The price of this 5.5 definitely will have an impact on the 5.0s, 4.0s. Again, this 5.5 has nice off white pages. BTW, very nice GL1. Thanks. This was the copy of GL #1 that Rick had up for sale here in July. Too bad I was not smart enough to snag his last SC #22 5.0 for $1500 instead. Another nice one will come your way. Just a missed opportunity. Not at that price unless I can find it raw locally............or Rick is kind enough to use July 2009 pricing on his new copies that are being slabbed
  8. I do have a few new HG slabbed and raw early GLs to add to the sig line when they arrive shortly as well. (thumbs u
  9. Wow, $2900 already with lots of time to go. It looks like I will just have to be content with two copies (5.0 and 4.0 old label to be resubbed soon) unless I can scare some up locally. If this one hits $4K, does that put 5.0s at $3K and 4.0s at $2K already?
  10. It is probably too pricey as is right now to see much of a jump. Didn't a 5.5 go for $60K in the last Clink auction?
  11. Which is why the 5.5 on ebay is REALLY looking good! No, it is 6.0 AND ABOVE that everyone should focus on. Don't waste your time with low grade 5.0 and 5.5 copies. BTW, I am no longer the high bidder. Which one of you popped my $2300 cherry after I posted it here.

This has long been an undervalued book (along with a handful of other SA DC keys). That being said, I am certain that we will eventually see 9.2+ copies on the market for the simple fact that there are a lot of collections yet to surface over the coming 20 years as long time collectors (or their heirs) sell off. After talking to a few dealers about other books at the SDCC, I am certain there are more HG SC #22s out there that will eventually come to light. FWIW, I wonder if this 5.5 has 6.0 potential? If it was a Clink auction at least we would know based on the action and final price.

  14. I think you're in for a bargain....that is, unless I decide to push up the bidding Go ahead and pop it. My max right now is $2300. I put it in as a stink bid to see what happens and am very surprised it has lasted this long, to be honest.
  15. Interesting. My bid is currently the highest on the 5.5 SC #22 on eBay. It looks like the book has stalled a bit. I wonder if it will break $3K now, or if it is a bit to soon for those lofty heights?
  16. Now, someone show me any other SA (key) census whereas you have only 7 copies > 7.5 and "zero..zilch...goose-eggo" > 9.0. Let's compare it to the other top two notable DC Silver Age: Brave and the Bold 28 has 18 copies above 7.5 and Showcase 4 has 12 copies above 7.5. Which makes SC 22 scarce in high grade. Who will be the first two score the 9.2 SC 22??? Whoever presses their 9.0 first?
  17. Provided there are no stains or edge tears, or issues on the back cover, probably 5.5/6.0.
  18. Any early issues of GL or JLA? The Earliest GL I see is #24 and the JLA starts at #40. (thumbs u Thanks. I saw that. Do you still have the Showcase #22 or GL #1, 7, 8 and 9? Just curious as these are hot books, and I would not mind a chance at nice copies of them. Unfourtunatly we never had copies of these books. The 8 and 9 have already been sold. Sorry, stay tuned though I have some news that may cheer you up. (thumbs u You have secured a Showcase #22 from another source? Looking forward to seeing the new list of books.

  20. As I a recall, these all the top high grade holders of CGC Showcase 22: 9.0 Heritage auction 9.0 Comic Link auction 8.5 Metropolis Comics/Comic Connect 8.5 Doc Joe form thread 8.0 Rick made a private offer for $12500 8.0 Metropolis Comics private sale or Rick's offer to Private collector 8.0 Private collector I know 7.5 Peewee from thread 7.5 ? I saw this on the thread somewhere Anybody else has additions to add on this list? The 9.0 CL auction copy is owned by a board member. No, not me. The CL one is the nicer of the two 9.0s, right? I think it is and I have been told it won't be sold despite the mania. Yes, the CL copy is in good hands right now. (thumbs u
  21. I have seen the scan of one of the 9.0s recently, and if I recall correctly it was the Clink copy. Wasn't there a comment here a while back (or maybe it was a pm I received) that it was nicer than the Heritage copy but went for less?

  23. You gotta tell us the grades and PQ....so we'll all know how these nice puppies impact the #22 censuses. This is Palamas undercopy. http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3312284&fpart=2 Yup, that is the one that kryptospidey was selling in a package with GL #35 in 9.6 for $1700. I passed since I had already snagged a 5.0 from Brian/foolkiller that week, but my gut instinct was screaming to buy it. Good thing I was rational and passed.
  24. You gotta tell us the grades and PQ....so we'll all know how these nice puppies impact the #22 censuses. If I recall correctly, one of them is a 5.0 that kryptospidey had for sale way back when in July.
  25. Don't remind me. I was holding off on all of the 5.0s in that price range last year waiting for a FN and then happened to miss the couple of nicer copies that were auctioned.
