  1. Based on the Marvel key experience, I don't think Showcase #22 will drop back to 2008 or early 2009 prices once the movie hype dies down. Most of the Marvel keys ran up, pulled back a bit and then plateaued, but they did not pull back to anywhere near the pre-movie run up prices. Look at X-Men #1. I can remember buying nice VG to VG/FN copies for $500 before the first movie was a (relatively speaking) success. Same thing with ASM #1/AF #15, FF #1, and TOS #39. These books ran up and even if they dropped it is still well above pre-hype levels.
  2. Come on folks - this is a relatively common key with low demand that noone else should be chasing now...........................
  3. If anyone is looking for a presentable low grade Showcase #22, Joe Verenault will have a 2.5/3.0 (Rick and I both felt it was 2.5) in Chicago. He is asking $695 but was willing to go down a bit on it.
  4. very nice pick up Showcase #22 was the hot book at the SDCC. Yes it was! I didn't see anymore CGC graded copies when I got there, but did see about 5 raw copies that were overgraded and overpriced There was one raw copy at the end of the con that I was considering. Metro sold all of their copies, including the PR one, with the most expensive being a GD/VG for $575. I believe that Rick sold all of his copies as well. Looking at the prices on the books that sold, there were probably new GPA highs set across the board in all grades.
  5. Here is my recent acquisition:
  6. Looks like the Showcase #22 club is fairly small on these boards. I will post my newly acquired copy tonight.
  7. That is a sweet copy of SC #22. Looking at the damage on the front and back cover (looks like there is a chip out of the tip of the top left corner on the back), I would put it in the 6.0 range provided there are no other spots/stains (there is one in the L in "Lantern"). I'm confused. If you're looking at the same #22 that I'm looking at, it's > 6.0 !!! Don't get me wrong - structurally it is a very sweet book but I would say 6.0, maybe 6.5, when you take the defects into account. Here is what I notice in the scan (remember, it does not show NCB bends/creases): - the corner chip on the back cover should drop it to an 8.0/8.5 to start with. - small chip middle of top edge back cover - a few tiny edge tears/nicks along top of back cover (?) - looks like there is also an edge bend along the left side of the top edge on the back cover (next to the chip) - light soiling and possible perimeter tanning on the back cover - multiple spine creases - light corner crease top right front cover - appears to be a light impact ding and bend bottom left corner/bottom of spine. - small stain in L of title (which CGC is hammering right now, along with dust shadows) - I am also considering the fact that the scans will not show NCB bends/light creases that could be on the book as well. Since it is a big key, I guess it could be get a bump depending on how CGC feels that day (this would be a given if it were a Marvel), but I would give it a 6.0, maybe 6.5, based on what I can see.

However, the corner chip should drop it to an 8.0/8.5 to start with. Add in the spine wear, small stain (which CGC is hammering right now, along with dust shadows, as I have recently had the displeasure of finding out ) and taking the fact that a scan will not show NCB bends/light creases it looks like a 6.0/6.5 range book to me.

  10. I also think that part of the problem is that GL was a not a first tier character for so long that collectors did not pay much attention to SC #22. Outside of the fantastic O'Neill/Adams run in the early 70s, the character languished until the outstanding current run by Geoff Johns and the movie announcement. Add lower desirability for a long time to a lower print run to start with, and you have a key book that a lot of collectors did not really pay attention to and preserve. I have been looking for a nice copy for several years now, but did not make it a top priority until now even though I am a GL fanboy. My attitude was that it would always be an "affordable" key due to low/moderate demand so there was no hurry to get one. Great assumption on my part.
  11. Nice. I was considering grabbing that one for a second copy as well. (thumbs u
  12. My copy does not arrive for a few more days, but I am curious to see how many board members have copies of Showcase #22 and what condition they are in. MY guess is that it is a tough book in FN or better, but maybe this thread will prove otherwise. Please post away.
  13. If he can act, then it might not be a bad idea. This would bring a lot of hype to the movie.........and run up prices on the keys.
  14. There might be, but I don't think that we are quite there yet.
  15. I talked to Calvin Slobodian at the Calgary Comic & Toy Expo a couple of weeks back about pre-Robin Tecs. He said he has#28-#37 (plus a bunch after that) in FNish or a bit better (he said his copy of #31 is FN/VF) condition. They are in his personal collection, though, and I don't believe they are for sale. He did have a great selection of GA books at the show, with a nice early Batman run starting at #4 I believe. There were also some Tecs in the 40s and 50s on the wall as well, and a few nice Timelys scattered around.
