  1. I would like to hear more about Forest City Coins. I was walking by them about two years ago, saw old comics among all the other stuff they have, and went inside. But I was, shall we say, "dismissed" by staff telling me they only did email auctions and internet sales on comics. If that has changed, I will happily return.
  2. Ironically, I saw the bound book of these pin ups for the very first time last week at my LHS. I had never before heard of its existence. The copy I saw was heavily water damaged though. In answer to the question about who drew the Avengers pin up, it appears to be a cut and paste of various images by a variety of artists. The Beast for example is by Gail Kane, but Giant Man is by John Buscema.
  3. "GCD says there's very little, if any, Jack Kirtby in these covers. It's too bad the King didn't continue on the title except for a couple more covers. " Some have speculated that X-Men become a third tier title for Marvel specifically because Stan and Jack both left after only about 15 issues. There was nothing magical about Roy Thomas and Werner Roth.
  4. Metropolis' grading is extremely consistent with CGC. They are a pleasure to order from.
  5. Clark and Lois. Bruce Wayne and Talia. Did Aquaman and Mera have a child that died young? Hulk fathered Skaar (sp?).
  6. Yes, if you collect older comics, check out your want list vs Metropolis' online inventory. Order the particular books you want, and then set a time to pick them up at their offices. Metropolis does not have a store front; you can only get in by appointment but I am told the art on their walls is breathtaking.
  7. THIS. Listen to Michelangelo. Way too many people are slabbing modern books that are not worth $18 even if they are 9.9. Oh, you say you have a slabbed 9.8 copy of last month's Batman? Fascinating. There are a dozen more just like it in the back issue bin...
  8. I'm still using the same clipboard and paper sheets that I started back in the 1980s.
  9. As others have pointed out, don't do it. I know a dealer who does part of his business buying stock from failing comic stores. He says that business is brisker than ever before, and he expects many LCS closures soon. If you must...go online, and research how to develop a business plan. This has nothing specific to do with an LCS, but it is a vital thing for anybody to do before starting a new business. For some people, when they come to business plan questions they cannot answer, that is a big warning flag that the proposed venture will not go well. Get a location within walking distance of a middle school or high school. Do NOT blare offensive music inside the store. I have cut short my own visits to stores that play acid rock, liquid metal, cop killer rap, etc. Imagine how fast a mom shopping with her 10 year old will leave, and never come back. You will need to decide if you focused on just new stuff, ie., you are just making a percentage on whatever your customers pre-order from Diamond; or if you will buy back issues. It seems there are ever fewer stores that deal in back issues, so that could be a differentiator. If you buy back issues, tell yourself you do NOT need to buy everything that is offered to you. There is little or no market for many back issues, particularly in low grade. Good retailers figure out soon that product must move out the door. Everybody makes a bad purchase sometimes, and ends up with 100 copies of X-Force #1, poly bagged, platinum edition. It doesn't matter that you paid $5 each for them. If the market price is $1 each, sell them for that, and get rid of them. If you wait for them to come back up to $5, they will out-live you, and take up valuable space for years. Staff (including you) need to have the same level of courtesy and grooming as anybody else in retail. Way too many owners and staff treat working at a comic store as a hobby. A new customer should be able to tell at a glance the difference between staff and other customers. Lanyards with staff's names in large print can be nice. Similarly, your store is a place of business, not a clubhouse for any unemployed buddies to hang out all day talking your ear off. If they want to hangout, you and they can do that at someone's house after work. But here and now is WORK. Good luck.
  10. What was Aquaman's last appearance before Adventure 260? How many years was he absent from comics?
  11. A cocky Swordsman not really doing anything by Kirby, plus floating Avengers heads with zero emotion by Heck. Not the best cover design from the House of Ideas! Nice book though, and it will soon be on my want list.
  12. Purple guy is the Imperious Leader from Battlestar Galactica. Carded figure looks like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/191805702317?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true
  13. 1. I don't think there is any vantage point in space where you would be able to see the entire Earth, and yet have the moon as big as it is in this drawing. 2. We can see the entire Earth, but only see North America and a hint of South America. If we can see the entire Earth, then we should see all of both of those two continents.
  14. that was a steal It was... The converse were marked $4, looked like a 1 so I asked, they said 4. Bought a few things, then came back to buy a couple more games. They piped up and said I could have them for $1... winning... I almost forgot, I got this with the plastic wrap still on it, for $2 at another thrift sale. . Helping children learn to read by throwing in words like "Moauv".....priceless.....
  15. Easy question from a DC war comic beginner. During the period of 1965-1975, for which war books did Joe Kubert usually draw interior pencils?
  16. Suddenly the seller's 13K asking price seems entirely reasonable.
  17. #29 is indeed the earliest non flame cover, I believe. "It Happened on Yancy Street"
  18. Johnny is still on fire for the cover of #2; he is drawn normally, but then with fire outlining him. Johnny is indeed not on fire on the cover of 50. To my surprise, he is not on fire on the cover of 48 or 49 either! Perhaps to emphasize how powerless the FF is against Galactus and the Silver Surfer? But there is one earlier cover with zero flames...
  19. The cover I had in mind when I made up the question was #97, the Creature from the Lost Lagoon, with the FF at the beach and the monster coming up out of the water behind them. But upon looking it up, Johnny's hand is on fire. I stumped myself! We are looking for the first FF cover with Johnny not on fire AT ALL. And it does happen in the Silver Age. Twice actually.
  20. If I looked like Johnny on that cover, I would say I was on fire. So no, it is not #8.
  21. Without looking, name the first FF cover that shows Johnny Storm NOT ON FIRE.
  22. The stories are 1960s DC sci fi cornball. I am a big GL fan ( I only need six more issues to compete my silver age run) but the first 30 or so issues are not very good. After that Gil Kane finally found his style and the books at least looked better, but they were never all that well written until the Neal Adams run.
