  1. Most people don't realize there's no express right to privacy in the Constitution. We were a country for well over 100 years before court cases even hinted that there might be a right to be divined through cobbling pieces of the document together, but there's still nothing there that expressly gives us the right to privacy. It wasn't until the mid-60's that the supreme court came up with a way to say that married couples could use contraception in the privacy of their own home. The ninth amendment begs to differ: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

  3. or PM has been the rule used by most sellers for quite a while now. trumps all puts alot of pressure on a seller to get the taken by PM up before someone else can post Negotiations via PM have been used to sell a lot of books for the benefit of buyers and sellers. Like it or not, if a book sells by PM we are just going to have to take the seller's word for it. If you want different rules for your own sales thread that's fine but I don't think a rule change for everyone would do more harm than good.
  4. I just sold a book on ebay that I posted less than 48 hours ago. it was an NYX 3 CGC 9.8. I had six offers on the book within the first couple hours. If a book is priced too low it is not hard to believe that someone (or more than one person) will pounce quickly.
  5. Given the time frame (three minutes) I am not sure it is reasonable to expect the seller to post the sold via PM that quickly. If the buyer were OK with going public this would be easy to clear up. Having sold books here I know some buyers don't want their business made public if they buy the book by PM. If I were going to put a book up on ebay I wouldn't want the world to know if I got it for less than asking price.

  7. This is the stance taken by the post office. You could try to tell them you are simply mailing books but if they open the package to inspect it they may send it back to you or with postage due to the recipient. You could roll the dice to save money on shipping but there is a risk. I have no idea what percentage of media mail gets checked.
  8. At the end of the day I made a couple sales threads attempting to sell some books here. I did sell some books but not as many as I hoped. I will take any lessons learned with me the next time I decide to set up a new thread. I did my best to follow the rules and made sure that my threads conformed to them. I believe it is reasonable to expect that others should follow the rules as well. While I had some ideas that I wanted to try out it is unfortunate that not everyone liked all of them as much as I had hoped. I received a lot of feedback regarding the threads and some of it was even positive. Most people were grown up enough to post there feedback by PM, in this thread, in the sales announcement thread, or even in the moderation threads. While I think the negative posts may discourage some potential buyers the feedback has been helpful. I just have a problem with posts in the threads themselves that crossed the line from friendly suggestions to outright criticism. I would much rather have people looking at my books than snide comments. You can dress it up however you like but there is no excuse for thread crapping. As for the feedback I have received, it has not been ignored. I did make some changes to the first thread (the modern thread) and scaled back the gifs, etc. even further in the more recent G/S/B age thread. I may let these threads play out a bit but the next time I set up a sales thread it will probably look a lot more like most of the other threads I have seen here. Please keep in mind though that the hyperlinks, the index, and the links in the signature are there for a reason. I have sold here before and seen other sales threads and am attempting to make it easier for the people that do want to buy books from me to find them. As a buyer here I have seen threads that start out with listings of the individual books (interrupted by posts from people other than the seller) and a series of recap pages that are not always so easy to find. With over 1,000 books to sell, an index at the beginning of the thread with links to the individual listings seems like a good idea to me. I understand that it may not be so easy to peruse the thread with a smart phone but with so many books listed, my expectation was that people would prefer to look at the thread when they had the time to sit down at a computer and go through it. I never expected that anyone would see a thread title with over 1,000 books and think "hey I have three minutes until my train comes let's look at that thread now" instead of waiting to check it out when they got home. While I have made some mistakes I will learn from them and do better next time. Meanwhile I think that some of you are missing out on some great books just because you do not like the way I have presented them. Due to a recent rule change since my last sales thread here my initial attempt to create the thread went poof along with any announcements regarding initial sales. I did make some modifications to the modern thread based upon early feedback but at the onset the thread was successful which why I gave some (bad?) ideas more time to play out. Thanks again for your purchase and support. My signature contains links to my other threads, my feedback (kudos here and ebay), and other books available for combined shipping. You have a point about the gif banner in the signature. It may be distracting. I only added it recently but could just as easily get rid of it if it is a problem.
  9. Fair enough. However people may feel about the sales presentation, that is a matter of opinion, and your thread is otherwise conform to the rules. There were some good natured and constructive posts, but some were definitely neither and I agree with you that those negative posts should be removed. As one of the negative posters, let me set the record straight. My post was over an hour after the first (and at that time only) post in the thread. The post was wordy, visually distracting and confusing as to where the books for sale were, and the only link took me to a list of moderns. As it happens, the OP was coming back with the moving parts required to turn it into a G/S/B sales thread later, but that wasn't obvious at the time - I thought 'work in progress' meant 'more books to be added'. As others later suggested, he could have used the test thread to build it. For my part I'm sorry if Dr Chaos took offence, but it was fair criticism at the time - and a mod could easily have decided to poof his first post if he'd come across it at the same time I did. The link was clearly marked under construction. I used the modern thread to copy the format for the links (hence they were directed to that thread). Until the post with the listings was created there was nowhere for the link to go. I believe the thread took less than two hours to build so it is not like you really waited for me to flesh things out before pouncing. Would it have killed you to send me a PM or to post your criticism in this thread instead of cluttering what is essentially my store front with your post which clearly did nothing to help me sell any comics?
  10. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism. We all learn something new every day. With that being said why is it that with this thread and PMs available for such things that thread crapping seems to be the go to move for so many? It was bad enough that people were criticizing my gold / silver / age sales thread before I even finished putting the listings up (despite warnings in the OP that the thread and links were under construction at the time) but now someone decides to quote one of these posts. Since some people seem to be unable to help themselves I would appreciate if one of the mods can make this latest post in my thread go poof.

  12. Yup. Several times. The last one, the USPS mail man faked my signature confirmation by scanning his fingertips. They're not all nice guys unfortunately. If the book is CGC graded, look for it on Craigslist and ebay. I had a package with tracking sent to me. The post office left it on my doorstep where it had been stolen. I never recovered the raw books but I found the CGC book from the shipment on ebay and discovered that the thieves had sold it to a local comic books store where I was able to get it back from the store owner. If your package is in the wrong hands, chances are that whoever has them will attempt to sell them.
  13. For $200 or up I would get signature confirmation but usually wouldn't bother with insurance. Earlier this week I made a $1,000+ sale on ebay. For that one I am going with insurance.
  14. Let's just say that a seller has a thread with a large quantity of books with no pictures. Who has been harmed exactly? If a buyer wants to see pictures before making a purchase is it so hard for them to PM the seller and ask? Even if a buyer buys books from a seller they do not know with no pictures and a stated no return policy they still have Paypal to protect them. The current rules call for a description of the item including its condition and / or pictures. Seems fair enough.

  17. There is a board rule prohibiting sellers from soliciting personal Paypal payments. I am not sure what responsibility, if any CGC and the board administrators should have beyond that. Ebay / Paypal is a very large corporation with their own lawyers. Why should anyone here have to be the police when it comes to Paypal?
  18. Probably because if PP finds out a seller is abusing personal in this way, they will get shut down. Maybe they have a limit in how many "friends" they allow you to have. Are we talking Facebook friends or people that you see at least once a week?
  19. As an analogy...shoplifting is stealing, period. Right? The police can't say...well, if you only shoplift infrequently, it's not illegal, but if you shoplift frequently, it's illegal. Enforcement is a different matter, but the act of shoplifting is either illegal or it's not....it's clearly illegal. PayPal either permits you to use Personal to buy goods from a friend, or they don't. Enforcement is another matter...but as a matter of stated policy, it's either allowed behavior (whether I do it 1 time or 10,000 times), or it's not allowed. Two customer service reps have seemed to answer one way, and some of the written PayPal definitions seem to imply a different answer. Which is it, PayPal?
