  1. So idk if you’d consider this heating up but I have to give a shout out to Matt Kindt’s new series cover A for Spy Superb - I saw it and immediately was drawn. It looks like a Trader Joe’s/paper envelope but is essentially a double cover with the cover A underneath. I think a lot of ppl overlooked the cover for other copies because of that fact at least at my LCS. Have yet to get enough downtime to read through it. Not sure how CGC would grade it but the outer cover is very nice cardstock like material.

Scream is one of my all time fav movies and Neve Campbell, Jamie Kennedy and a bunch of the cast will be at ECCC this year. She rarely is at cons - I wish there was some scream comic. I might get a VHS signed which I found out some ppl get graded ?

I am considering getting them to sign the Stray Dogs scream cover homage but not sure…

Just finding out about the VHS collectors market and this variant box is pretty sick. What I don’t get is apparently ppl like them sealed and will get autographs on top of the shrink wrap. Seems super weird to me I’d want it on the box.

  4. Hello all

I am woefully new to the yellow slab world and even more so to getting sketch covers or commissions done.

I’ve been to conventions before and I’d usually just get some non-keys or prints signed by the artists. When it comes to artists, especially ones that have a decent following - I can’t imagine you can ask for a sketch cover to be done during the con itself - or if they do open it up it’s gonna to be a long queue.

Is there a protocol in reaching out to artists ahead of cons and providing them with a blank and negotiating the fee - or is this actually all done on the floor and in artist alley. Also how does the CGC process work - whether they are on site or if I rope in a facilitator.

this is for ECCC btw, I’m probably hoping for a long shot here with guys like Jonboy Meyers, John Giant, Philip Tan, Humberto Ramos, Maria Wolf, Mateo Scalera, Terry Dodson etc.

They owe $6000 to Diamond, $4000 to Lunar, and $200,000 (!) to Penguin Random House, according to the document in the original post. How can the PRH debt be twenty times the amount of Diamond and Lunar combined? Does PRH give stores a four or five month grace period to make payments on their orders?

Potentially were given book advances - also they must do their trades? I know many a story of large book advance checks that the writer can never sell enough copies to meet.

In the case of this book I do like the Trade better.  Kaare Andrews cover?  Yeah, that old style price box with the heads is dope looking.

Yes sir - I saw it on anti-hero’s shop which I’m realizing lately is related to unknown comics?

There was the NM98 Spider-Man homage a few years back that was the same.

but to adamantiums point - if it’s art I like I’ll buy a virgin to display (if I did have a wall display). But for the average consumer or seller it’s really hard to tell what book is which, is it a key? I’ve seen ppl buy Strange Academy Finals 1 Peach virgin thinking it’s her SA 1 virgin since they both have magik. Some of these variants don’t even have the characters from said series in them - I just like knowing what’s a key, or at the very least is that great del’otto with venom a Venom, King of Black, ASM, etc.

I realized this was a problem for me when I was watching a whatnot stream where they constantly had to remove the NM comics from the Mylar to look to see which issue and series it was.

  7. Reading more through this thread their concepts both annoy and impress me. They are definitely deconstructing/playing around with a lot of the factors that drive a set of current collectors (the blank cgc slabs irritate me but some would call that post modern art) - and looking at the Kickstarter and eBay it all seems to be working.

I want to say good for them but I’m pretty uninformed- if I can’t read it and enjoy it I’m not going down this rabbit hole. This is however coming from the guy who didn’t buy SIKTC singles until I read the first deluxe trade and paid a premium for it.

  8. So I was away from the hobby during the bad idea became a thing - are any of the stories any good?  Some of their PR stunt stuff almost seems like conceptual art - an idea about the medium more than the actual medium (a good story and art).

A customer who had their merch told me this was the new Black Mask at my LCS - I remember Black Mask being built on some of the best comics of those years. Maybe I’m missing the point in this ultra modern variant world but if the comics aren’t good I don’t fully get it. But they did name themselves Bad Idea so touché maybe…

  9. Since getting more into the *variant* game - sigh I know - I am finding in a lot of cases liking trade dress more than virgins. Although the Virgin art looks amazing often I forget which issue or even title some of them come from when they aren’t slabbed. I’m probably in the minority especially with virgins seeming to have lower print runs.

Here’s a major one for me - ofc it’s a bit unfair due to the amount of nostalgia baked into the trade dress.

Well you beat me to it. This is the 3rd online retailer/publisher I have seen have major issues this year and either end online order or file or bankruptcy protection.

Be very aware of who you are ordering your comics from going forward this year. Covid money is over and it would not shock me to see several online retailers go under this year. Some just popped up over night and have been flying by the seat of their pants for awhile. Dont get caught holding the bag. If you play nice you will not get your comics or your money.

I wonder how much the pandemic affected these online variant driven sellers - I always assumed the hit LCS’ took but never thought of this affecting online only sellers to the same degree.

  11. I have always loved invincible and read most of the run week to week but the early part of my run is pretty well read/lower grade.

I was looking at 9.8’s of #1 which have skyrocketed since I last checked - I assume due to the show.

    a few quick questions.

    1) Why is the Larry’s Variant so much cheaper than A cover when it has a much lower print run.

    2) What’s your opinion of the Whatnot/Kirkham variants and their high prices. LOVE the art but still feels odd seeing a reprint so high in price.

    3) Speaking of reprints - is there a reason the Skybound Vault variants don’t do better ?  If I recall black label had something like - 200~400 print run?

    4) any other variants anyone likes or I should take a look at?

This is for PC purposes and not a flip most likely a sale would be down the road if at all.

Usually over priced and over hyped.  I watched some guy bid against himself to get more copies of new garbage.  He bought them blind for $250 and he was happy.  :screwy:

This is what I’ve seen not that high of a number but it’ll be 50 mystery packs that are just combinations of the same handful of variants. Also ive seen descriptions where it says 9.4 or better - when that was not at all what I received.

Buying on FOMO is what Whatnot capitalizes on. I'd avoid.

Yeah seems like it - I was hoping to find some cool sales of ppls personal collection books or a bunch of digging through their long boxes but that’s not been my experience.
