I just liked the story. I was told regular by the shop owner not to expect any to go up in price. It is good now to be able to make some money from a hobby, to see something go on ebay that you have and dont care about. Get it sold and get something you do are about.

I have to ask, why are you buying comics you don't care about? My collection was filled with things I liked because I liked them.

What would be the thing that happens only in the comic shop that wouldnt happen in another retail store or how does it differ? Obviously DnD and Magic and stuff like that maybe? The only thing Ive noticed different about comic shops is the mass of people chatting around the till to the owner for hours on end

Knowledge of your area and customer base defines what you order, and comics are not like any other retail product, even magazines. How do I know that? I managed a newsstand for ~3 years. Go to a department store and see the same thing everywhere you go. Comic-only shops are vastly different in that it is very clientele-based. Some comic shops do well with statues, others don't. Those that do, order them and have many on display. Those that don't, don't.

If you need more detailed info, I suggest working at a comic shop for a while.

Can somebody fill me in on this? Whats so dumb? The idea there are children buying comics?

Where the HELL did anyone ever say that?

    Quote

That they would be smart enough to see a thing one place at a much cheaper price than it sells for somewhere else, then take advantage? That they get help from their parents?

Curious, do you have first-hand knowledge of what kids do at all? The ones I see are playing video games, or picking up sticks outside, or picking their nose. I am around a few children and I don't ever see them looking at eBay for comic prices, ever, but I am not around every child so I can't say for sure.

    Can you?

You can always buy digital if you cant get ahold of a physical copy.

I'mma quote RMA here (sorry for stepping on any toes, Zeph):

"Paraphrase alert: 'you want a copy? Too bad! This one's fer MAKIN' CASH! You can just go buy that digital one if you want it so bad!!'

And that is how you kill an industry."

    and

"Those dummies want to read the story in the format they like can go jump off a cliff. You'll read it in digital or not at all!!"

All comic shop owners who order from diamond are speculators.

How so? The retailer has pre-orders, copies he knows he is going to sell, and the "table" copies he knows he will sell a good percentage of, and that covers his profit margin. That isn't speculation, that's just commerce.

Is there an updated beware of seller list somewhere in this thread?

I am not sure how pure that list will be (and I am at least partially to blame, as I put my own name out there as a joke and it got taken seriously) but here's mine right from eBay, if it helps.

Is it just me or did books selling out and becoming $20 books overnight part of the reason you started collecting comics way back when?

No. My first book was UXM 171, right off a spinner rack. I read my buddy's Spider-Man comics, but I just bought X-Men because I liked the X-Men. I am pretty sure I never sold a comic for at least 15 years after that, at least one that was mine (I worked in a couple brick-and-mortar stores back then).

No one just reads comics? No children buy spiderman? In over 30 years youve never seen anyone reading for fun? Who only had a limited budget to work with treating it as a hobby. Not starving or living on the streets. Just working within a budget.

"Ah man I wanted to start reading that Superior spiderman trade but it will have to wait until next month, not if I sell that Hells Arisen #3 it wont"

    Never?

Never ever. I have worked in retail for 20 years. I dont see why running a comic shop day to day would be any different. I understand about the advanced ordering I asked Diamond to send me information about opening an account. Then wised up super quick.

I have worked in retail, many shops, over many years. Some of them have been comic shops. There is a difference.

I live in Minneapolis now, and pick up poop out of my verge at least two or three times a year.  Now, I don't have an axe to grind against Minneapolis so I just assume some careless dog walker didn't pick up after themselves.  But were I someone who didn't like my city government you can be sure I'd be calling and reporting human feces on my verge.  Especially if a site had been created to track that kind of thing.  I assume something similar is the cause of much of San Francisco's poop problem.  Or are they actually testing the poop to find the source?  I do agree that San Francisco (and Berkeley) have a homeless problem that they desperately need to address, but this has always struck me as politically motivated.  And with me saying the dreaded 'p' word I will stop posting on this.

There is video online, if you really want to see it, of people dropping trou and pooping right on the sidewalk - there's even video of a man walking into a local grocery, pulling down his pants, and dropping a deuce right in the aisle, and the store has a working toilet.

So, your above post is foundless. It's true, whether you want to believe it or not. I sure can't make you.

I lived in San Francisco for about 8 years and didn't see a single piece of human waste in the streets or sidewalks the entire time.  Maybe things have changed in the 20 years since I lived there, but it sounds like an urban legend to me.

Go on the internet and look it up. And yes, it has become problematic in the more recent years, so I have no doubt you didn't see any of that.

Meh, I just read his little rant and its a bit much.  You aren't going to reach anyone by spouting off in an unprofessional manner.  I have no idea who the guy is but this article isn't going to do anything to help his cause.  Comes across like a child throwing a temper tantrum.  Go in the bathroom, cry for 10 minutes, then be done with it...

You do know that this is the day & age of the internet, where people go there and vent/whine about anything and everything, right? And not that I sought this article out, but I am much more likely to read something like this out of nowhere than Kylie Jenner's latest big-butt fashion tips.

Wait, of course you know that, you just did what that comic shop owner did - go on the internet and say something that was on your mind.
