  3. Tales of Suspense 58 VG- $85 1st Captain America in TOS, 2nd Kraven appearance SOLD! The book is flat with no major creasing some minor wear on the corners but no major blunting. There's a date stamp above Iron Man in marker and some minor ink transfer under "OF" in "TALES OF SUSPENSE". The spine is tight with no loose pages. The pages are complete and mostly cream to off-white. The book has two main issues. There is a 1/2" triangle missing out of the top corner of the back cover which is evident in the back cover scan and there's a not-to-dark moisture stain at the bottom of the book near the spine. Even so, it presents very well from the front. Both the missing corner from the cover and the stain are allowed in a G/VG and I feel like the attractiveness of the book overall allows a bump to VG-. Tales of Suspense 59 Fn $110 Iron Man/Captain America double feature begins SOLD! A nice looking book. It has a small tear on the top of the front cover near the left corner, some very slight raggedness along the top of the back and a bit of a top-over-bottom overhang. There's a fleur-de-lis stamped on the back in the upper corner which is the mark of a long-time local comic shop owner who passed away two years ago. He would mark books with the fleur-de-lis when he wanted to sell them in his discount bin. The rest of the book is consistent with a higher grade. Pages are complete with no coupons missing or tears. Tales of Suspense 60 G/VG $30 2nd appearance Hawkeye Spine roll with 1/4" overhang, top over bottom. Nothing missing from the cover but well loved. Pages attached and complete but four of the pages have an inch or so stain in the margin. Tales of Suspense 61 Fn- $36 Mandarin appearance I think this book is a very solid Fn but I nicked off a half grade because there's some tanning around the edges on the insides of the covers. The paper quality is cream to off-white and supple, and complete. Tales of Suspense 63 VG $45 1st Silver Age Origin Captain America Tales of Suspense 69 G $5 with any other book 1st Appearance Titanium Man Back covers:
  4. South Florida, eh? Maybe I can come visit it and slip down to KW for a couple of dives while I'm there.
  5. Thanks! I'm gonna miss that Hawkeye.
  6. Tales of Suspense 56 GD Tales of Suspense 57 GD-Pr 1st Hawkeye You can't see the biggest problem with the 57 in the scans. I tried to take a picture but it didn't show well. Most of the spine is missing. It seems to have just fallen away, not as in a spine split but a narrow band of paper centered on the spine is missing. Remarkably, the cover is not detached because the staples are biased a little toward the front. There's Marvel chipping along the bottom front and the pages are cream but complete. The top corner has been bent down on some near the back. The 56 would grade a little higher but there's a stain on the top right corner of all of the pages which can also be seen faintly on the top right corner of the back cover. I don't see it on the front cover so my guess is that the book was open and someone set something moist down on the right corner. Both books for $75. SOLD Back covers:
  7. Give that man a gold star! (and just for the record, I grabbed this from the Net; I did NOT open the book I have for sale and scan the page)

  10. This was the first issue of Thor that I bought on the newsstand. That cover still brings back fond memories from my childhood!
  11. As a postscript, I took the book by a local shop where I know the owner and his opinion is that, without the tear in the back cover, the book is a solid 5.0 and presents very well with good reflectivity and a minimum of wear. He would drop the grade a half-point to a point for the tear which, in his opinion, is hardly noticeable. So, his conclusion was 4.0 to 4.5 and anyone else would probably pick one of those two grades, depending on how much the tear bothered them. So you folks were dead on, not that I ever doubted it. I'm convinced that 4.0 is a solid grade for this book. Thanks again for taking a look.
  12. So, we're all in agreement then? 9.4? Seriously, thanks for taking the time to express your opinions. The tear still bothers me a bit so I think I'll go conservative and put this up as a 3.5. I think that's a safe bet.
  13. Thanks for the opinions. I notice in the grading definitions that I keep handy that VG/F allows up to 1/2" spine split and VG allows a 1" spine split. Neither grade says anything about a straight tear in the cover which would very helpful if they did. Which should have more or less impact on the grade: a spine split or a tear of the same length? VG allows for a 1/4" triangle out of a corner or edge which this book does have. On the other hand, this book doesn't have some of the other negative attributes associated with VG or even with VG/F. It's really a mixed bag, IMHO. The question I'd like to have an answer to is, when a book has such a mixed bag of grade characteristics, do you try to average them out or do you look for the worst issue and match that to the highest grade which allows it? Forgive me if I'm overthinking this but I'd like to hear some thoughts on that.
  14. Yes, this cover certainly ranks up there with some of my favorite Jumbo Comics and Sheena covers. What's not to love about strong women who get the job done and have such a flair for fashion while doing it?
  15. Robert, that Exciting 57 is gorgeous! I think I'm in love. I know you hate to part with it. GLWTS.
  16. I have an Iron Man 1 that I'd like some expert opinions on. I always feel a little unsure how to properly grade a book when I run across a material tear in the cover. The back cover has a 7/8" tear on the margin about 2/3 of the way up. The page quality is ow-w. Thanks for looking.
  17. Fantastic Four (1961) 59 Inhumans Appearance, Silver Surfer cameo The grade says it all. This is a nice looking book with nothing exceptional to mention. Page quality is off-white to white and the book is complete. Pages and cover are firmly attached to the staples which show minimal to no discoloration. Really. It's a nice book.
  18. Fantastic Four (1961) 55 The cover has moderate creasing. There's what appears to be a tape pull at the top of the front in the middle. A small rectangle is missing out of the open edge. There is some staining and discoloration consistent with the grade. The book is complete and I would judge page quality to be tan to cream.
  19. Fantastic Four (1961) 19 I would describe this as an average to above average, well loved comic book. It's flat with no spine roll. The cover and all interior pages are tight to the staples, which show some discoloration. Page quality is cream to off-white and all pages are complete; there are a few small stain spots on the page edges which don't bleed into the interior. The cover is flat with some minor to moderate color breaks, especially across the upper right front corner and a few minor color breaks across the lower right front corner. Some stress is evident along the spine. The upper edge shows a very small bit of Marvel chipping. There is a little bit of a suntan along the open edge. The biggest flaw is the 1/2-inch sliver missing from the open edge which fortunately blends into the background very well because of it's placement in the white background. There are no unusual issues with the back cover. Except for the missing sliver, I'd happily grade this book as a Fine to Fine -; I think the definition of Good/Very Good allows the half-inch sliver so I'd give this book an overall grade of Very Good - (3.5) and it's a very nice example in the grade. The third scan is a closeup view of the missing sliver. Includes a letter to the editor from Steve Gerber.
  20. I have a couple of raw issues of Fantastic Four for a friend. I have the books, I did the grading, and I will be doing the shipping. First, a few rules: I will accept checks or money orders (both of which must clear) or PayPal. Please, no HOS or Probationers. The buyer has seven days from the day of receipt to inspect purchases and books must be returned in exactly the same condition as when they were shipped. Buyer is responsible for return shipping costs. Any number of raw books will be a flat $6 shipping in the continental US. I'm happy to ship anywhere else the law allows for exact shipping costs. Insurance is not included but may be recommended as I can't be responsible for books after they're mailed. You're welcomed and encouraged to PM me with offers but the first unconditional in the thread gets it. You know..., the usual rules.
