  1. You can rant all you want. That's the beauty of a messageboard like this one. I've found TMNT collectors to be among the friendliest and most helpful on the boards. If one TMNT collector says another is out of his "ever-lovin' mind" you can bet that it's a gentle razzing.

Peter speaks the truth. I often jest with my follow turtle collectors as the "A-list" collectors (for lack of a better term) are for the most part, very close friends. Just ask Danny how many times I've told him nobody likes him and that his collection is . :P If I was serious I don't think hed be flying across country in october to attend my wedding.

However, if you'd like a serious response to your question, I will try to give you one.

Why are we out of our ever lovin' minds for wanting the best? Surely you collect CGC TMNT comics if you are on these boards. I didn't win those auctions because I already have those books but I'd pay that high for them if I didn't have them and needed them to complete my 9.8 collection. Some of us have money to blow and in this hobby, some of us like as close to perfect as possible.

I bought a TMNT #8 CGC 9.8 a couple of years ago but then later sold it back once I realized it had "off-white to white pages" on it. I only collect CGC 9.8 or higher with white pages only.

I do this because this is a hobby and the highest grade books get the bragging rights, the highest investment value, and the closest means of perfection for that hobby. I'm not a perfectionist in real life nor do I obsess over anything else. I just like my graded books to be the best of the best.

You can say it doesn't matter all you want, but i'm sure if you are a diehard TMNT collector, and you saw a collection of original volume 1 TMNT comics all CGC 9.8, it would bother you more than you think when you look at your colleciton of 9.6 or lower. Just a theory. I just think that us 9.8 collectors take pride in what we have as not everyone can afford it nor does everyone appreciate the pristine nature of the book inside. That's my rant. Now I said it. I've had my party and cried since I wanted to. The end.

    Two things:

First of all, best is an incredibly subjective term. My collection is extremely personal to me, and I enjoy books that feel as though they were personal to someone else. To me, a low grade book often feels more "loved" than one that was most likely sitting in a vault for the last 40 years.

For instance. I am a huge Thor fan. I recently picked up a Journey Into Mystery #83 that is a signature series (Stan Lee) 1.0. Let me tell you, that book deserves to be a 1.0. Significant cover damage; nothing white about the pages whatsoever; the book looks as if it were read into the ground. While many people would scoff at a book like this, I find it incredibly charming. I purchased this book from the original owner, who had kept it since childhood, and had the book SSed by Stan Lee himself. The guy loved the HELL out of that book, and now I have the honor of owning it. That kind of story is worth far more to me than a grade. This mentality spans throughout my collections of various things. I've opened VERY expensive action figures many times just cause I felt they deserved to be played with.

And hell, most of my most prized comic books are books the CGC won't even grade. So what do I care?

Secondly; I find the curve of the slabbed book economy to be apauling. For instance, taking a quick look on c-link right now theres a blue label AF15 7.0 and a blue label AF15 7.5. Both have sold. The price difference for the .5? Roughly $20,000. These are two books that, if raw, the average person wouldnt be able to decern the difference in quality of. That is a mind boggling concept to me. Yes, I used an expensive book to illustrate my point, but the same goes for any CGCed book, the scale simply slides.

In closing, did I litterally mean that 9.8 collectors are crazy? No, of course not. As a collector of...anything should; I would never seriously criticize someone for their passion regardless of what it was. But, on a personal level, it is totally past my comprehension :)

So there you go. I hope that sufficently answered your question.

Also, welcome to the boards. :)

  2. ok, here is my lone Turtle book....didn't realize it was worth anything until I went into this thread.

the book is near perfect with a slight blunt top left corner.

It really isn't worth much as that appears to be the white cover standard edition (unless Im wrong...what does the back of the book look like?). They go consistently on ebay between $25 and $50.

As for PMing everyone and their mother the scans...thats an awful lot of time and effort that I dont want to have to go through. I'll figure some way to age gate or censor the content and show it to you guys.

  3. Question for you guys. As you may recall, a few months ago I acquired an adult TMNT comic that, while produced by Mirage artists, was never distributed publicly. It was created as what was essentially the biggest inside joke in Mirage history.

Anyway, when I acquired it, I showed cover images in this thread...fully intending on showing complete scans upon having the book in hand. However...upon looking through the book I was suprised how....EXTREMELY adult it is. But I really don't want to deny you guys a look at some significant Turtles history.

So my question is...if I publish the pages here for you guys...am I going to get in trouble? I just dont know enough about how the mods feel about adult content to make the decision myself.

  4. Just as sure as I am that there is another gold out there even though weve only found one. It will be mine...oh yes! It will be mine.

    EDIT:

The silver came in today, and to put to rest any doubts about its authenticity (which are understandable due to the incorrect label) I did a quick color comparison against a standard edition:

    100_3065.jpg

Also, I have to say that this is the best looking 7 ive ever seen. There is a 3/4 inch split in the spine, other than that, the book looks perfect.

  5. Is this one widely considered an actual "error" or simply a variant? CGC slabs don't indicate an error on the label and while the light blue shade was dropped out by accident, it doesn't really affect the book negatively the way the #4 2nd print error variant did by printing the wrong logo.

Cool book regardless! 500 was the original print run. Anyone have any educated guess as to how many surviving copies are out there?

I personally consider it an error because giving them out as a con exclusive was an after thought. They didnt PLAN to print these with the blue dropped out, but once they were printed it was more of a "why the hell not" kinda deal.

But some people feel differently, which is why I I will refer to it as "New York Comic Con" in quotes :-)

  6. Hoping that Adam won it. :wishluck:

I won the book. (Sorry Peter! You know I love you!)

I just dont get why that book is valued so high. I mean a qualified 7.0 signed wont get a grand and unless its a good deal we dont see a lot of blue label 7.0s going for that price. Sure there is a very limited supply for this book, but why such a demand?

The book's qualified status is an error in my opinion, as they fact that it is signed and numbered is 50% of what defines it as a silver edition. I have already started a thread in the Ask CGC section explaining the situation and asking if I can resubmit the book for a label correction (Danny, if you could provide me with a photo of that 4.0 blue label silver you saw that would be totally helpful). As for demand...the book ran 100 copies, and of those 100 the tmnt collector community at large knows of 5 (including this one). That's pretty darn rare.

  7. Guess this isn't a TMNT item you see very often, maybe one of the rarer items.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170403251120&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

    Only 50 copies.

Anyone have any info. on these items?

I have a couple sets of minitures, but this packaging is much nicer than the ones I got that are simply in plastic backs with a cardboard top. I believe mine are actually originals as they are the original characters with their original weapons and I bought them the same day that issue #3 came out, they're advertised at the bottom of the inside front cover of an early issue.

    Hey gang,

I was recently able to secure a copy of this book from Steve Murphy @ Mirage (However not the copy in that auction). I actually picked it up today, so I don't have it in hand yet, but I thought you'd like to see the pictures I DO have. Additionally, I will be posting scans with a write up once I have it in my mitts.

I also have some new information regarding the book directly from it's creator, Bill Fitts:

Well, what this was is a comic I put together as a "farewell gift" to my friends at Mirage before I left to move back to california in 1993 :)

I wrote and did the layouts, and my friend Dan Seneres did the pencils, I inked it and Steve Levigne did the lettering. As it was sort of a "taboo" at the time (as the TMNT we're still enjoying popularity and we were careful not to tarnish the clean image), I kept it on the under and only printed a run of I beleive 50 copies, which were given out to the creators and some of the staff - it was done secretly and then I sprung it on them as a surprise, heh.

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted.

  8. Here is something I have been waiting for a little over a month to share with everyone.

If you recall, the copy of Gobbledygook #1 that was gifted to me by Kevin was a misprint. 3 images in the book appear twice (to see that book, click Gobbledygook error . The pages that repeat are labeled alpha-numerically.)

While this error possibly makes it the rarest copy out there (as we have yet to find its possible sister book, which would be missing 3 pages), I've still always wanted a copy of the book that did not have the error in it.

Recently, Steve Murphy of Mirage, was able to afford me this opportunity. Steve and I were able to work out an agreement for the purchase of a copy of Gobbledygook #1 which had been signed by Peter, personalized "To Smurph" (one of Steve's nicknames) and given to him in 1989. Steve was kind enough to draft me a letter of authenticity to go with the book.

Here are a few interesting pictures from the book. All of the photos of the book can be found via a link at the bottom of this post.

Here is the letter that Steve wrote for me. I have water marked across his signature for security purposes.

The front cover. This copy is extremely clean, with only one tiny color break at the spine.

The inside front cover showing the personal signing to Steve from Peter.

For the rest of the book, please click GobbledyGook Non-Error .

    Hope you enjoyed it!

  9. Hey guys! My copy just arrived and as it cool as it was to have the book in my hands, you can just imagine my surprise (and delight) when I opened the front cover and saw this:

    IMG_0106.jpg

So looks like I won't need to find a Peter Laird signature of sketch! Woo hoo!

He must have signed that a LONG time ago, because he has been incorporating the year into his signatures for a VERY long time.

  10. I was looking at your photos. Looks like you have a real set of these?!?! Are those yours? If so where did you manage to pick those up and how did you mange to get Kevin Eastman to sign eh lol?

Yeah, those are mine, and are real. They were a gift from Kevin. Use that link that rabid provided above for the full story :-)
