  1. Not a comic but a Sports Illustrated issue. There's a white spot on the I in AIR. It's a perfect circle that's slightly raised off the paper. I tried removing it, but stopped because I didn't want to cause any damage. No idea what it is or how it got there. Wondering if it may be a drop of ink that somehow managed to get on there during production. Has anyone else ever seen something like this? Opinions on how CGC would account for this in their grading?

    Comics too.

I sent a couple in with that, and they came back with less of that.

Had to weigh resending a 2nd time vs the probability of them damaging the books.   Decided to live with it.

Customer service gave me a $25 credit and told me to send it back for a second ME "fix". I think they may have done some minor damage during the first ME re-encapsulation so I'm in the same boat as you were. Trying to decide whether it's worth trying a second time...

  3. Not a comic, but I sent this Sports Illustrated in as a Mechanical Error return back in May due to scuffing (not really sure what to call it, more like streaky gunk?) on the interior of the slab. Got it back a couple of days ago and it has the exact same issue...

@CGC Mike A lot of fellow magazine collectors are getting slabs back with this same problem. One in particular said he recently received ten ME and has to send seven back.

  4. Another Fast Track Modern submission that was received June 1st shipped today. 12 issues — two 9.8s, seven 9.6s, two 9.2s, and one 9.0. These were all strong 9.8 candidates so more head scratchers here, especially the 9.0. One of the 9.6 slabs is a Fury of Firestorm #1 that was flawless raw. I'll have to wait until they're in hand to investigate further. Also, no grader notes.

This looks like an example of a book where the cover overhangs the pages and then when the book moves during shipping the overhang is crushed against the inner well. It sucks and has seemingly always been a problem that is difficult to avoid.

Always learning something new. CGC said to send it back as a mechanical error return (my third in the past couple of months) and that CCS would fix it. Does anyone know if the CCS press will be expedited at all?

The lack of graders notes boggles my mind. You pay for a service and it's a black box of 0 accountability.

Is it true that grades have to be aligned between multiple graders?

Are random books being spot checked by senior graders to ensure quality?

Couldn't agree more about the lack of grader notes. It's ridiculous. Also, grades are supposed to be spot checked.

Grading is a team effort, with multiple CGC professionals examining every collectible to ensure accuracy and consistency. CGC's graders enter a grade for each collectible into CGC's computer system. A consensus is then reached on the final grade of the collectible.

@skybolt and I have been talking about this the last month or so, there has to be some kind of an issue with whomever is grading books from the 80s and 90s. I have had so many books from that era get graded unfairly. For right now, I have decided to just stick with getting modern books from last 10-15 years graded and when I know that I want a book from the 80s/90s that is worth some money to be properly graded I'll just spend the money on a walkthrough. Some of these new graders I just do not think know what they are doing with books that range from the 80's to 90's.

My last submission was also Fast Track Modern — received April 14th and shipped April 20th. Eight of the nine comics were from the 80s and 90s, and seven got 9.8 (one lone 9.6). They are similar in quality (some maybe even slightly less) to the books in the submission that shipped today. CGC has a bit of a consistency issue I think.

Was the 9.8 a newer book? I've had similar submissions where only books from the past 10 years receive the 9.8 grade. Some newer CGC graders are hammering 1980's and 90's books if they don't have perfectly flat spines, have some overlapping of the cover at the spine, book is slightly miss-cut, book has some production type scratches for hard stock covers, cover corners are naturally overhanging, etc.

I definitely got a new grader then. The 9.8 is an X-Men #4 from 1991. The rest are from the 80s and 90s (the only exception being a book from 1978). Also, no grader notes. Makes me worried about my other submission that's sitting there waiting to be graded.
