  1. Interesting. I typically find Rockfords to be very unappealing, but I do have a few of them. The later ones in particular seemed to be quite nice.
  2. There's also a variability to different pedigrees depending on the age of the books. I won't rule out a book based off of a specific pedigree, but in many cases I'll want to see it in hand before deciding.
  3. I'm trying to figure out just how they are oriented in that car.
  4. Or we can ban you I don't take up much room, and I shower beforehand. I have my new passport ready to ravage the US shows for the next 10 years Hopefully we build a wall...
  5. I was sort of thinking of going to one of the Chicago shows
  6. Unfortunately not, I'm the second owner on about half.
  7. Although not in true high grade, a few of the latter Whitman issues present very well.
  8. Very high grade copy with great paper. The colors on this one stand out, with the gradations on the robot's leg making almost a rainbow effect. I sold a really HG copy of this one a few years back. I plan to hold onto this one.
  9. Another one of the nicer condition books. A great interior page, half man/half octopus? Murphy Anderson's Star Pirate is one of the gems of the run. Radiant colors on this one.
  10. A few fun pics from the recent collection I bought. This one is in spectacular condition with white pages. This one has particularly nice colors, I've not seen another quite as deep.
  11. I love the snide tone of your question, and since it is directed at me I can answer that! I collect high grade comics. I like for books in my collection to look as close to newstand new as possible so that when I thumb through them I feel like I am experiencing them as originally intended. I buy CGC graded books because in most cases high grade examples are already slabbed...and also by buying slabbed books I know I am getting what I pay for. I scan them slabbed so I can keep a record of them for insurance purposes as well as conversationally, and if I ever decide to sell I at least have a photographic record to go with the label. I then crack them out and read them, not only so that I can enjoy them as they were originally intended, but so I can say Booyah Mofo! to snide turds who question the way I collect. Cracker.
  12. That's really a nice example of illustrated storytelling. I've been reading a bunch of older books lately and some of the stuff was just terrible at having the illustrations contribute to the flow of the story. Heath was a great storyteller and artist from the beginning.
  13. I confess to having purchased Western Life Romances in the past, but never a Classics. But it does seem that there is a collector base for them.
  14. It is obviously hard to determine the tone of this quote, but given its placement I don't think it was said awe and respect. Probably something more along the lines of questioning amusement along with a head scratch. It got me thinking about what is the least desirable genre of the golden age? Some of the old standbys, like teen humor, are now highly sought after. Crime is on the rise. Romance is starting to pick up. Westerns are still slow for the most part, though some publishers are picking up (EC, Atlas, Ajax). I would say Classics Illustrated but there is a very rabid base of Classics collectors which exist outside of the normal comic collecting community. Heck, someone said there were bidding wars for Dell Four Colors on Ebay! So what is it that nobody is collecting these days? I started considering cross genres or subsets and I think I've come up with the least desirable type of golden age comic - Photo Cover Western Romance! When I said that I was perfectly serious. But there was dual intent, both that I'm amazed in a good way because it takes genuine dedication to dig that deeply into the hobby to find some of them, and secondly amazed in a bad way because some of those books are so creepy that I'd never ever want to own them. But most of all, I'm amazed that there's a thread that showcases these crazy covers and I absolutely loved paging through it. That was the most educational thread I've read in months, and this one follows it up nicely, so thanks for both of them! That being said, are photo cover westerns less sellable than high-HRN Classics?
  15. As a wise man once said to me, "It's only money..." My wife doesn't think that guy is very wise
  16. I'm amazed at some of the books that you all own.
  17. No, I think that's Dave Winiewicz, the Frazetta collector.
  18. Wow, I hadn't looked at the OA since last week and I'm now seeing 3 or 4 pieces that are must haves. What an incredible offering.
  19. Looks like we may have an answer. And as usual, we were all wrong speculating http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=9749306Post9749306
  20. But they're not truly nice until they have a self-determined eponymous sticker placed on them.
  21. But the Ents had some clear intent in their conversation. At least beyond simply being heard.
