  1. I don't think your examples are apples-to-apples at all, the GSP was not initiated to target these issues/problems. Ebay and Paypal have protection policies in place for shilling, feedback etc. The simple fact is the buyer doesn't want to (in some instances) pay double the shipping charge for essentially the same service for what is pretty-much a money-making scam by Ebay. Again, using my example above the laws on customs values are fairly arbitrary, they're being revised/negotiated as we speak.
  2. I think you're over-reacting, mail fraud, give me a break? Look, I ask very politely if someone is willing to do it, if they don't then that's fine I move on. I understand how answering an email is very difficult and aggravating, I bet you must be great to work with.
  3. One other point not directed to anyone in particular, I don't get why sellers get offended if a foreign buyer asks to mark something as a gift. For Canada the US anyway, we're supposed to have a free-trade agreement. Case in point, yesterday I came back from a vacation in NC. I purchased about $200 worth of clothes during my trip, because I was out of the country for more than 48 hours it's considered duty-free and not subject to additional taxes. Really, what difference does it makes whether I'm on vacation or at home buying comics?
  4. So I'm not taking an antagonistic approach to sellers, I understand why they use GSP, it's just the additional expense usually makes it less viable when buying certain items.
  5. Exactly, you're getting dinged customs regardless.
  6. The Ebay Global Shipping is such a scam, ever since they introduced it my ebay buying plummeted. I refuse to pay duties to Canada on top of very high shipping rates.
  7. Okay, I didn't think you got the TEC for free but was more surprised you didn't get it the first go-around. Was it not available, or did the seller not tell you about it? Either way, great books!
  8. That's what I thought were strange, these were books you passed on the first attempt? Maybe I'm missing something...
  9. Ya, if you got the vibe maybe this was all part of the long con and he never wanted to buy anything at all! I'm personally not overly worried someone will rob me, I've been to a very large dealer's house and was surprised he accepted people into his home given what he has, but maybe he goes by intuitive as well. I have a rule that I never go anywhere to meet anyone I haven't dealt with before; they come close to me on my terms. I consider my time more valuable than a sale, so I never risk a kijiji flake unless I can meet someone conducive to my schedule. I think the most frustrating online experience I had was some crook (with a different name) that would immediately ask if someone that was just posted was still available? Often he wouldn't respond to follow-up emails, it's possible because he knew I was on to him (the buyer scammer that would say he sent payment for items he never did), but after kijiji changed it to no longer be able to identify email addresses I couldn't rule him out. I went as far as to contact the company about this person who was trying to scam people, but they just washed their hands with it....
  10. Maybe this guy is banned from Tim Hortons ahaha......before I didn't care about letting strangers into my place it was more of a gut feel about the person I chatted with. This changed after I let a couple people go through cheap boxes and they took way too damn long going through boxes, eventually you just want them to leave! Lol! Now that I live with my girlfriend she doesn't want strangers coming into the place, and I also don't want to deal with scheduling kijiji flakes that don't show up - which there are a ton. Why do you even bother to meet anyone, just tell them to swing by the next show you do? You can even offer to hold comics. Then they can view them there if they decide they don't want to buy, if he/she doesn't like those terms then the person is probably mentally unstable to some degree and you couldn't get a deal anyway! Im sure we all have load of stories of these types of people on online, but things would derail your thread quickly.
  11. The high on 9.8s is over $2500.....this book is notorious for not hitting 9.8, before CGC loosened up their grading a bit a number of years back, no raws were coming back 9.8.
  12. Lois: Peter, where did you get this car? Peter: well, let's just say the car was a steal *winks* Lois: say that again. Peter: the car was a steal *winks* Lois: without the wink Peter: the car was a steal...... wink
  13. Cop: "So you're saying you haven't seen any Spider-Man collections"..... you: "no I mean there was one collection I just purchased with 3 long boxes from issue 1 and up, but the collection also had Daredevil in addition to Namor, so I didn't call you."
  14. I'm in Ottawa, it's a monthly show and fairly busy with 3-4 large dealers of comics, a smattering of mid-sized dealers, and a whole pile of sports guys. Considering it's the slowest month of the year (from what the big guys tell me) I was pretty happy to do 16 times my cost in sales. I'll try to get some more photos next time, this is a learning process for me and I'm making changes as I go. Actually the guy beside me didn't even man his table for half the show and I don't think he sold anything! He had some interesting sports memorabilia like old pennants, but I wonder why he even brings two end tables when he doesn't even sell anything?! Clearly, some of these older guys are doing this as more of a social event... On a cottage related note we're putting in an offer for a cottage! I can't wait, it will be co-mingled between investment property and personal use.
  15. Did you end up grabbing the stand? I participated in my second ever show yesterday, stealing some advice from this thread I brought three sets with me and sold two: Groo 1-42 and Hawkeye mini 1-4. The day turned-out to be very strong; I'm finding the delicate balance with what to bring and what to move, I might try and snake it a side table like the guy beside me!
  16. Nice group with the lots...I must have at least 2 or 3 Spider Man sets I can throw together....what are you asking on those? I think I was going to put them out at $2/pop for the run.
  17. Agree 100%. Go to page 1 or 2 of this thread and that's where I'm at, just setting up at my second show ever this coming Sunday. I spent 10 hours with my girlfriend yesterday driving around in Quebec looking at cottages, on the way back I picked-up a small lot of 100+ comics that I can move easily at $1/$2 each. When buying collections it's like you're always playing catch-up....trying to get buys sorted, your collection organized (updated), and then figuring out what and how to sell while trying to live a full and normal life.
  18. I didn't realize the 1 minus was also a UK price variant, I have a bunch of those too.
  19. I am not a big TOD guy, but I do have issues 1,16 and 19 in CGC 9.4. The covers are absolutely stunning!!
  20. I have a bunch, maybe a dozen or so starting as low as issue 7 (i think) and going up to double digits. There might be some bronze as well.....I'm happy with them regardless because as I mentioned they're part of my collection and represent a copy of a book I didn't have at all. I ask the question on value because it doesn't seem like there's many of these copies out there, in some cases none available at all and I have limited knowledge of ASM silver-age price history. I just know my first copy of a pence started from buying X-men 100 off a guy with a small collection, I saw it and thought it was a reprint at the time until I did some digging on it.
  21. How do the UK pence variants compare in value to their regular US versions, lower? I have a bunch of ASM pence books as part of a collection I bought, they're part of my collection and for the most part the only copy I have - a placeholder until I find the non-pence book.
