  1. According to this article on the Association of Comics Magazine Publishers, both Lev Gleason (publisher of Crime Does Not Pay) and Bill Gaines were founding members of the ACMP. The article states that the ACMP was formed on May 1, 1947, so it's probable Gleason and Biro already knew Gaines when this was produced.
  2. For those keeping track of such things, a new back cover version of E.C.'s 1947 giveaway "The Wonders of Wire Rope" has been found, the "Hazard Wire Rope" version. There are now FIVE confirmed back cover variations for this early E.C. giveaway comic, which last I checked wasn't in the Overstreet Price Guide.
  3. Crime Does Not Pay 58, 1947 This must be mentioned somewhere, but I just noticed it. Check out the name of the tenant of the apartment where the Jersey Kid hides out. Subtle jab from Biro?
  4. Love seeing these great comics around Halloween! Thanks to everyone for posting! Repost, still not Gold, but still one of my fave Halloween covers. Subtle in its terror. The pumpkin outside his window sees him...eating a piece of pumpkin pie. Simple art, almost like paper cutouts, adds to the atmosphere.
  5. Nice result on this very early 1933 Crime Comic. Large size, nice paper with heavy covers. Secret may be out on this. Still a deal!
  6. These prototypes for anti-communist comic books came from the estate of Reed Harris. Here is the story from the seller: We inherited a rank, musky, and very messy garage through an estate property of the late Ann Harris, daughter of Reed Harris, who's professional life was borderline incredible. He wrote a book in '32 that initiated correspondence with Bernard Shaw, He was high ranking in the WPA Federal Writers' Project '35-38, Office of War Information til '43 and served in Navy '44-45 then back to State department, was there when US Information Services (later USIA), faced McCarthy and subcommittee on TV and turned the tables on the senator initiating his downfall, resigned and ran his own publishing company until '61 when Ed Murrow anointed him assistant director of USIA, headed Valley Forge foundation, AMVETS and self government committee top 3, a few highlights... Then, his mother Lois was close friends with Adah Van Noppen, who's husband Leonard was a prominent writer and professor who had all famous artist friends. Two anti-communist comic book prototypes from this historic figure!
  7. Found this "Voyage To Freedom" prototype / presentation copy. Strangely enough, found another one years later. Different back cover versions...
  8. You guys are getting slow I have to post this...
  9. Thanks for this, Robot Man! This is the most comprehensive line up of oddball Beatles comic appearances I have seen!
  10. A subset of your subset Charles E. Chamberlain, MI - 1987-1974 Samuel L. Devine, OH 1979-1981 John Kyl, IA - 1959-1965 James H. (Jimmy) Quillen, TN 1963-1997 Dan Rostenkowski, OH - 1981-1994
  11. Last run from this batch... Western Crime Busters #1 to #10, Trojan Magazines, 1950-1952 Didn't know much about these, but who could resist GUNSLINGIN' GALOOTS! Two stories in each issue feature a female protagonist. Some of these stories appeared in black and white in Trojan's Western pulp magazines. Very surprised to see some of the later issues feature Wally Wood artwork! Western, Women, and Woody! Nice stuff! (Interior scans from comicbookplus.com)
  12. Border Patrol #1-3, P.L. Publishing, 1951 Issue 3 features a nice Harry Anderson story. (scan from comicbookplus.com)
  13. Robot Man I am kind of surprised they have you chasing these gimmicky new releases. I had you "pegged" as more a fan of the classics...
  14. A while back, someone on eBay was selling complete runs of Golden Age Western titles. They weren't all in great shape, but the price per book was very reasonable. These might not be the kind of books you would want to hunt down issue by issue, but it was fun to benefit from another collector's obsessive work! Here are covers from the run of Premier's Masked Ranger. Really like the George Woodbridge covers on the later issues. He did some nice historical stories in the later issues as well (scans below from comicbookplus). There is also a nice Angelo Torres / Nick Meglin story in Issue 9: Some have speculated there is an assist by Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson and Roy Krenkel.
  15. I don't know if this applies to this particular item, but I wanted to share something I once saw that opened my eyes. Several years back I visited New York City. We went to a large indoor antique market. Outside, several groups of people were hanging around. One guy had a small fire burning in a pit in the earth. In the fire was a metal figurine of the Yellow Kid (an early comic character). The man poked and stirred the figurine in the dirt and ashes while the fire smoldered. After a while, he removed the figure and put it on a table to cool. Then he removed another shiny brand new metal figurine from a carton that had about a dozen more brand new ones inside. He put the new clean one in the fire and stirred it around to get the "aging" process started. He then gave the "aged" metal figure with its fake "patina" to a kid who walked it into the antique market. @Robot Man and others can probably add stories of similar fraud. I'm not saying that this cover is definitely a new print that has been deliberately "distressed" to look like a beat up old comic book cover. But one should always consider the possibilities for fraud when looking at a potentially valuable "vintage" item.
  16. "Why collect romance comics?" It's nice to find issues you have never seen before. Enchanting Love #5 from Kirby Publishing, May, 1950. And discover hidden gems inside, like art by Bruno "Doom Patrol" Premiani. And a previously uncataloged story by "Ghastly" Graham Ingels.

  18. You snagged a rare one. Out of all the other experienced collectors I've known, yours is the only other copy I've seen. Welcome to the club - more people have Action #1s than have HELME'S SNUFF-MAN. Was lucky enough to get one with the original mailing envelope.
