IDK about reattachment. If a wrap is detached, the paper is usually torn, so there's not a good was to reattach without finding somewhere else to attach the wrap. I'd call that restoration (purple) & it would misalign the centerfold with the rest of the wraps. I don't think people do this. Replacing a wrap with an undamaged one from another book is called marrying, and that would be qualified (green). If one tried to replace the wrap, I'd bet the staples would end up breaking & need to be replaced. Replacing staples is conservation (grey). None of these options make any sense with this book. The wrap isn't the most impactful defect IMO & restoration or qualification of this type only makes sense if the book is really high value. FMV for a Universal copy in this grade is under $100. I mean maybe if it was a 9.6/9.8 candidate with a detached centerfold, but even then I'm not sure this book commands a high enough value/interest with a green or grey label. A good book to enjoy ungraded as it looks pretty nice.

Thanks for going further in depth with all of that, your help has been greatly appreciated!

By the cgc guide, the upper limit for a range means an otherwise perfect book with only that defect would grade there. The lower limit means if there were other defects (e.g. staining or missing pieces) warrant a lower grade, the defect would not cause a further deduction. Where a book falls in the range with the combo of defects in the same range is the tricky part.

Thanks for clarification. That makes a lot more sense to me now. I also heard you have to be careful sending books to a presser to reattach your staples, because CGC can catch that and green label you

blunted corners with color breaking creases, moderate edge wear with color breaking creases, color loss and a small tear on the top edge, moderate spine stress with color breaking spine ticks, stress lines and staple tears, moderate tape pull by D.D.'s right foot, color breaking scratch/tear at the lower left between D.D.'s hands. slight spine roll, small tear at the lower right corner of rear cover.

IMO, The tape pull prevents this book from grading higher...VG 4.0

    5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN):  Back to Top
An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.

4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG):  Back to Top
Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.

4.0 VERY GOOD (VG):  Back to Top
The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.

Those staples look sketchy to me as well, not experienced enough to justify if they are original staples or if it’s been restapled. Appreciate your help!

  4. Hello all,

rough condition book here. Noticeable major flaws being top right corner front cover, detached staple on bottom by splash page, chunk missing on back upper corner, as well as some folded over edges on top of back cover that are still hanging on.

appreciate everyone’s input and thank you in advance!

7.0 maybe a 7.5 after a press... most GOOD sellers are conservative with their grade estimates or at least SHOULD be. It encourages repeat business. I dont' think I ever had that issue or read it. One of the few ASM's from that era I haven't read.

Definitely check it out. It’s a really good read!

Unfortunately it doesn't have 8.5 ceiling.  Too many flaws on your copy.  I have to agree with everyone here.  It's 7.0/7.5 at best.

This particular copy was graded a 5.0 by seller. Any thoughts why they would give it this grade? Over Conservative?

According to the Guide (recommended), the corner shows "wear", which is good for 8.0-9.6. Scuffs 6.0-9.6. Both depend on severity, so I'm just guestimating where in the range this degree of defect falls. IMO, the wear probably "doesn't matter" given the level of scuffing & stress lines. But, my read of the book is scuffing isn't considered as bad as creasing. My 7.0 is an absolute max. Probably a grade lower. Worse if they are a little hard on it b/c it's a modern book. I also noticed fingerprint(s) on Deadpool's leg on a second viewing. I wouldn't test the CGC waters with this copy. If I was selling it, I would grade it closer to what you said to be on the safe side

Thanks for clarifying. Makes sense in what you gave it initially. I’ll keep it at my FN grade
