  1. Nah, lots of people have fond memories of this particular issue, and pages from it are scarce (I've only seen/heard of two others before this one).

And here's one of the two other pages from MTU #79, which is just like the Heritage page, except for no Red Sonja, or Spidey, or action:

But I still like it. Best, Lee

  2. I reached out to Terry about his previous post but he can't find it either. Does anyone have the link handy for the posting of the RC catalogs mentioned above?

    Chris

Hi Chris! You can find the beginning of that epic series of posts here:

    http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5955545&fpart=1

I'll try to scan and post more of the earlier auction catalogs (#2-#10) in the months to come.

    Best, Lee

  3. Thanks for the kind comments! Terry, I can see how your catalog posts from a few years ago were a total labor of love. It's interesting to learn about the Frazetta Sweet Adeline strip. Here is the strip in the current Heritage auction:

  4. Hi all! I just scanned and posted another complete catalog to www.comicartads.com

This time I was inspired by Terry Doyle, who posted complete scans of many Russ Cochran auction catalogs here a few years ago. (That was some great reading!) Terry started with catalog #11, I believe. I have posted the first catalog, from 1980. The previous owner of the catalog accurately wrote in the winning bids for each piece. You can see the catalog here:

    Enjoy! Best regards, Lee

  5. Great idea, Lee !!!

Comment: The typed question/answer format has it pluses and minuses. On the plus side, it keeps things brief. On the minus side, there's no give & take which could lead to interesting tangents, but we can't miss what isn't there.

Either way, I enjoyed the read. Also, any time I've seen Mitch post something on this board, he's brief and to the point.

Helpful hint, I unfolded and flattened the smaller catalogs so they are 8 1/2 x 11. They're less bulky. Then you can save them along with the large, true 8 1/2 x 11 catalogs.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! This was a first attempt, and I may tinker with the format over time. Best, Lee

  6. Hi all! In my quest to become the (very) poor man's Felix Lu, I decided to start a rather old-fashioned interview series on my ComicArtAds website. The first interviewee is the patron saint of ComicArtAds, Mitch Itkowitz.

Mitch's Graphic Collectibles catalogs are the backbone of ComicArtAds due to the clear and easy-to-scan comic art images in every catalog from 1977 to 2000. Mitch was very kind to answer some questions from me via email, and you can see the interview here:

Big thanks to Mitch for this interview, and for all he has done to get amazing art into the hands of collectors (including myself) over the years! Best, Lee

ps. Look out for additional interviews in the future from other dealers whose ads appear on ComicArtAds!

  7. Yikes, voting started already?!? For what it's worth, here's my nominations, with a few words about each:

    Captain America #206, page 16 (Kirby/Giacoia)

    http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8454

I had long admired this disturbing page, and I'm glad that Paul Handler traded it to me in a moment of weakness in 2016. The Swine is a real jerk!

    Incredible Hulk #222, page 22 (Starlin/Alcala)

    http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8455

I came across this page in a comic book store in Chicago during a visit to the city. This unusual art combo created an odd but memorable story.

Marvel Fanfare #27, page 1 (Salmons)

    http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8460

This splash comes from my one complete book purchase in 2016. The very stylized art is quite effective in several instances, including this image.

    Master of Kung-Fu #35, page 2 (Gulacy/Adkins)

    http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8458

I have wanted a MOKF page by Gulacy and Adkins for a while, and this fit the bill wonderfully.

The Comic Book History of Beer Promo piece (McConnell)

    http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8461

My brother-in-law co-authored the book that is the inspiration for this piece of art.

I look forward to voting for your amazing submissions! Cheers, Lee

  8. Thanks for the responses. When I got began collecting in earnest in 2011, I was surprised at the number of resources available. I'm sure I would have found it daunting and frustrating had I started collecting pre-internet, however I'm sure it would have been very gratifying finding a desired piece, much less a grail.

Hi Hekla! If you want to learn more about what art was available during pre-internet days, as well as who was selling and what the prices were, you should check out the searchable ComicArtAds database at www.comicartads.com

    Best regards, Lee

  9. Hi Greg! I ended up winning the FF #178 splash. It is (will be) the most I have ever spent on a single piece of art. I was willing to go up to around $8K-$9K but was getting close to tapping out when the pesky cut bids stopped and I won. I really love Dave Hunt's inking on that issue and am lucky to have three other pages from that book. Sorry! Best regards, Lee

Congrats, Lee! That's a killer splash. :applause:

Thanks Gene! I'm very happy it worked out.

And yes Greg, I will get the splash framed, together with another pretty sweet interior page from the same issue. I'll share that will folks when it is up on the wall.

    Cheers, Lee

  10. The one page I really wanted was the Thing splash by Perez. I was doing the live auction and did a cut bid at the end, got out bid and by the time my phone was ready for me to bid again, auction closed  I figure whoever won it would have gone higher than I was willing to spend (at least that is what I tell myself). The other pages I was watching was the panel from Spiderman 109 with Dr Strange. I really liked it but too high for me. The MoltenMan panel was also interesting. I sold at a previous HA auction for just over 10K but this time went for more. I was hoping it would go for less than 10k but someone else wanted it more. :sorry:
