  1. This is my first purchase from ebay in about 2 years. There are a few gems there every now and then I guess. The Big Apple copy just went for over 3K (I saw the book in San Diego and it was beautiful) which was more than I could afford, then this appeared on ebay, so I felt very lucky. Of course, I could have bought the Mile High copy in San Diego - it was also a 7.5 like the Big apple copy and the asking price was only $12K. Anyway here it is:

You beat me out for this one, congrats on a great pick-up.

  2. Nice copy of Jesse James # 1 :applause: The only one of the three books you posted I don't own :(

Is the art by Kubert and / or Infantino in that early issue?

I don't know who's art it is but based on my very limited "art detecting" skills I say no Kubert. Here are some pages though.

  3. I just recently read the first Walt and Skeezix volume (1921-1922).

I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to seeing how everyones lives play out. Interesting little scenes involving getting alcohol during prohibition. A great trip to Yellowstone also.

I also read the first two volumes of Prince Valiant (Fantagraphics).

The great reputation these strips have are well deserved. I love the adventure stories and the artwork is spectacular. Beautiful colors. I wish I didn't have to wait six months for the next volume.

  4. I have a question for any of the Centaur experts regarding Star Ranger #1 and Western Picture Stories #1.

Overstreet notes "1st western comic" next to the issue number of SR #1 but next to the title of WPS #1 with each having a February 1937 publishing date. Is it known if one issue hit the stands earlier than the other or is it generally considered a tie?

  5. Here is one for the L.B. Cole fans. Back in 1994/1995 I was exchanging a few letters with L.B. Cole which eventually led to an interview (along with Scotty Moore) that was published in the Comic Book Marketplace. During our conversation with him he mentioned selling a number of his color proofs to a couple of collectors. I managed to track one guy down in Nevada and still remember part of the conversation on the phone. I asked him if any of the proofs were Suspense Comics or Terrific Comics. Yep, one is a Suspense. Do you know what number? Nope, no number on it. (I was thinking it has to be issues #3-#6). Can you describe it? It has some guys that are torturing or sacrificing a girl. (Now I knew it was #3 or #4). Any Nazi guys? Nope, guys dressed in cloaks. So it was the Suspense #4. What was really neat about when I got it was that it was not trimmed like the comic is after the bindery, so the cover proof clearly shows L.B. Cole's signature at the bottom.

Now for those fans out there that might be able to help. There was another L.B. Cole Suspense Comics proof that was sold in a Wooley's auction in 1983. It is a steel tentacled Octopus making its way down a city street with cars and people in the grasp of various tentacles. I would love to find this some day, or at least get a color copy of it.

    Enjoy!

This is a great book BP and made me want to get some issues in this run. I have a question about Ibis #3 though and you would seem to be the man to ask. Is there confusion over whether #3 is a Raboy cover or not?

Gerber doesn't note it but Overstreet does and Comiclink has an old label stating "Raboy cover" but a new label that doesn't. (shrug)

i don't believe #3 is raboy. not on my raboy want-list, at any rate. and i checked some h'tage archives and saw a label that noted "raboy art" but not "raboy cover," but didn't look at them all.

I saw some of the "Raboy art" notes also. Overstreet and the old label copy on Comiclink are the only "Raboy cover" notes I've seen.

I'll assume it's a non-Raboy cover (Gerber, new label and Billy Parker vs. Overstreet and old label). Thanks.

  7. I've been picking up some westerns lately. Here are a few.

I picked up some Blazing West's from Jim Payette after seeing honkey cat's great group shot. I like them and will post my own group shot of them in honor of honkey cat when I complete the run.

I wish they would have lightened up on the western "slang" a little though.

sufferin' sassafras! way to go, yuh ornery polecat. and here i 'uz thinkin' ya a tenderfoot.

hmmm, mebbe i read too many of these here books over tha years....

Cool books. I never realized that Fujitani ever did work on Western. That was fun to see.

I have heard of Fujitani before but don't know much about him. I fell in love with that cover though as soon as I saw it. Did he always sign his last name as "Fuje" or was that due to the anti-Japanese sentiment so close to WWll?
