  1. Superman 1 in unrestored mid grade or higher [/quote Dear Mr. Gator What will be the worst comic book to own in ten years time?
  2. Dear Mr. Gator! What will be the best comic book to own in ten years time?
  3. On second thought nevermind. Because assuming the date you joined the boards is just a coincidence, I'm going to feel like a real *Spoon*. There's a guy who's been banned from the boards 6 or 7 times now under the names AlleyBat, BucOne, WaltT, and I believe JH1 (unless I'm confusing shills now.) I think his last few usernames have been a first name and last initial. He used to make a lot of short posts, usually ending in "?"s. I'm pretty sure his latest shill account was banned the day before you registered. In any event, the guy is a complete dirtbag and a known criminal. Just about the lowest form of life you're ever likely to meet. CGC keeps banning him but the next day he usually comes back under a new name. Hopefully this time he decided to crawl back under his rock for good and actually STAY banned. In which case I'm an for even mentioning anything and I sincerely do apologize You can't be too vigilant when it comes to this guy though because after padding his post count he has tried on several occasions to use these boards to steal from other board members. To this i'll add sending Sharon a nasty PM. This is something WaltT was also famous for. (sending board members nasty PM's) Oh I am sorry to hear that. I hope there are no shills around ...
  4. I personally don't think you'll ever see a Detective 27 sell publicly for $50k again. (I bought the Tec 27 7.0 from Heritage and already have had multiple opportunities to sell at $70k+ but haven't done so because I don't think I'll be able to replace it at a similar price down the road.) My Why didn't these buyers bid on the heritage auction? it's only a few months ago. The market has been changing rapidly lately. Filter81's evidence above suggests that I think (thumbs u
  5. That book has traded hands a few times since that auction at considerably higher prices than it sold for @ Heritage. Since they were private sales, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say how much it sold for so I will leave that decision to others. I can say the book has sold in the 6fig + range very recently Wasnt this particular copy the Tec27 1.5 universal which was resubbed and received a considerable bump (Matts pressing service? ).
  6. You could be absolutely right. I don't think its possible to say for sure. My guess is that PLODs will continue to rise on these two books (but at a slower pace than unrestored copies) But thats just my opinion and until proven otherwise the scenario you mention is definitely possible also. Personally, I wouldn't mind if the scenario you mentioned does play out that way. If I had a chance to buy a second restored Tec 27 in similar shape at $50k I'd do it in a heartbeat. The reasons I think PLOD Action 1/ Tec 27s have already jumped in value are 1) The sale Rick mentioned at $75k for a 4.5 PLOD Tec 27 2) The 6.0 slight Tec 27 where the owner turned down $125k. 3) The fact that I've had multiple interested buyers at $70k+ on that 7.0 Mod copy even though I'm not trying to sell it. (I brought the book to SDCC to use it as a "draw" to ultimately help sell other books. But this is a book I bought for my personal collection.) In SD I had one of the long-time, well-respected dealers there tell me that if he were selling the book today he'd price it at $150,000. And several other dealers throw out numbers north of $100k 4) 2-3 years ago an Action 1 in EP 6.5 was a $55k book. Earlier this year one sold for $90k and I know that book could/would resell for at least $110k+ today. 5) If even low grade (2.0/2.5) unrestored copies are selling for $150k-$200k, I think mid to high grade restored copies "should" sell for more than $50k. And I think there would probably be a few buyers at $75k-$100k that will be in the market for a nice restored copy that can't afford $200k for an unrestored. These are basically the data points I'm using to form my opinion that $75k-$100k is the new entry point for mid grade or higher restored Tec 27s. But until one actually comes to market and sells at auction its all speculation. If that Action 1 court copy in the November Heritage auction is auctioned off without a reserve this time I know I'll be watching with quite a bit of interest since I think that will be a good gauge of how the restored market is currently looking on these two books! I can say that I have sold more restored Golden age books in the past 10 years than most. (Its kind of been my niche I guess) And up until a few years ago, I always considered $50k to be the ceiling that just about no restored book would cross. (And as a result this is the ceiling I set for myself anytime I looked at buying a high end restored book no matter what the book was) But in the last few years we've seen several Action 1/Tec 27 sales in the $75k-$100k+ range and even a Batman 1 PLOD (albiet a slight P / pedigree copy) sell for $60k. So I personally think that barrier has been broken. Similar to the way the $300k barrier was broken recently on unrestored books. Whether or not Action 1 / Tec 27 will eventually see a short term price correction, what the price will be on the next restored (or even unrestored) Tec 27 etc I think is still very much open to debate. Anyway sorry for the essay. One of these days I'll figure out how to say what I'm trying to say using less words Yes I agree that the indications of a PLOD price lift as of late are certainly there. Question is: are this externally investors warming up on restoe, or is it collectors pouring out there heart of gold to snag 'that' book for their collection? I will be following the court copy also!!! Now this fine little essay proves in the most splendid way that the boards here are not only for leisure and fun, - But also for education.
  7. That book has traded hands a few times since that auction at considerably higher prices than it sold for @ Heritage. Since they were private sales, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say how much it sold for so I will leave that decision to others. Its very wise words that are being uttered here. Unfortunately the conclusion drawn from this is that me thinks this market for the 'big two' is moving so fast I just can keep up I feel that I will become increasingly unable to catch this elevator with the speed its picking up. And my bankaccount cant keep up at all Can somebody grant me a generous loan? Do I hear 100K? 130K? Prices are rising faster than one can save up. Now THAT is not fair
  8. Keep in mind, a year ago the highest recorded price ever paid for a comic book was roughly $300,000. Now there are three "recorded" sales at over $1 million. A year ago an Action 1 CGC 6.0 sold for $317,000 (current owner has turned down offers for much more than this) and a year ago Detective 27 CGC 4.0 could be purchased for probably $125,000-$150,000. Today an Action 1 CGC 3.0 could possibly sell for close to what the 6.0 sold for, and a VG Tec 27 could cost you upwards of $300k. I'm not sure if its the media attention caused by the million dollar sales or what, but there are definitely some big buyers in the market right now for Action 1 & Tec 27 and for the moment supply appears to be having trouble keeping up with demand. (particularly for Action 1) I sold an Action 1 CGC 2.5 (the infamous copy with the piece missing) for $45,000 a few years ago and can verify for a fact that the current owner turned down a $175,000 offer for it. (The offer came to me through heritage make an offer option since thats where I bought the book, and I relayed the offer to the new owner) Where prices go from here, who knows. Unfortunately MOST of the recent action 1 / tec 27 sales have been private sales brokered by Metropolis, and there's no way to tell which of those sales are legitimate and which (if any) are simply market manipulation on Metro's part. But that aside, its not so much that the PLOD market has changed much in the past year, as much as it is that sales from 6-12 months ago for Action 1 / Tec 27 might as well be ancient history. This is just a guess on my part, but aside from maybe an Extensive 1.5 or something, I personally don't think you'll ever see a Detective 27 sell publicly for $50k again. (I bought the Tec 27 7.0 from Heritage and already have had multiple opportunities to sell at $70k+ but haven't done so because I don't think I'll be able to replace it at a similar price down the road.) My Filter81 - Thank you. Very illuminating overview you present here. Now Gators position seems much more understandable for me. But: it *could* be the universal grade copies only that skyrockets now. I dont think there is any evidence suggesting that PLODs are being pulled up by the blue lable sales of T27 and A1?? Why not a scenarion whre youll see Tec 27 PLODs stay flat in the 50K ballpark. While the unrestored copies explode?
  9. Wasnt it an 8.5 Ext. that went for almost 70K? I didnt notice a 4.5 going for that? the 4.5 was a private sale about 2 months ago...yes, last year my former 8.5 went for 66 and change, and that trimmed copy went for 55 or so...and 8 years ago, a blue 4.0 went for $48K (and recently they are 300Kish books)... I am already looking back on them as "incredible bargains" , and we will continue to look back and say "wish I had of...." But Rick - these sales: the trimmed 7.0, your former 8.5 + the 4.5 ext as well as the 4.0 universal; they are hardly the only copies sold and bought?. Surely there have been a number of other copies which have changes hands during the timeperiode mentioned here. Alone Heritage havent they sold quite a few Tec27-PLODs over the years? I just dont understand why exactly these sales mentioned here should be taken as "incredible bargains". Havent "many" plods gone for the current price range over the years?

Gator: "now, while I do think there was a bargain to be had at the last heritage auction, since then a 4.5 ext tec 27 sold for almost 70K, and I know that a 6.0 slight (non reversable) had an offer of 125K turned down..." You can say that !!! The 7.0 on Heritage was only moderate. And It went for 55K That is a price If the 4.5 ext sale is confirmed - that is.
  11. I think the actual census # is 46 (if I remember) some say 300 exist some 200. Its impossible to tell how many books are sitting raw in oldtimer collections - like the gentleman who have just put his T27 7.0 universal up on Heritage to sell next month I think. He bought it back in 1972 or something. Quite a wise investment
  12. Rick -- you could shed more light on this than me , if you'd like to chime in I bought the book slabbed, but it was a very nice job...not "franken" ext from what I could see, just normal accumulation of defects repaired/replaced... and, as fish will tell you, appears nicer than assigned grade...probably in the 3.0 range before resto (thumbs u i would have left as a 3.0 unrestored, but looks nice 3.0ish = 250-300K apparent 7.0 PLOD = 50K I would have left it as a 3.0, but that is hard to say without seeing what the book looked like. As a side note 7.0 PLOD aren't 50K anymore more like 75K++. James G Hmm ...with all due respect didnt the last 7.0 moderate (trimmed) go for approx. 50K just a few moons ago (at Heritage) ?? I have no scientific, logical analysis to back up this belief, but I just "feel", if you will, that the stigma associated with PLOD comics will lessen with time, where a 3.0 unrestored vs. a 7.0 PLOD (same book) will not be the 250K vs. 75K difference it is today, rather will be "closer" in price/value -- well the only "logic" is that I just don't understand why the $$ wouldn't be closer -- if same book, intact, just the disclosed acts performed on it like sealing, cleaning, reinforcing, colour touch, so big deal, why such a difference -- just doesn't "make sense" to me --- not by a "factor of 4" type of sense, anyway I hope you are not right. You see - I have a few books to scoop up before the fog lifts and reality rears its ugly head.

  16. I can only begin to imagine what it must feel like to own a copy of Detective Comics #27. It's a book so legendary, so important to our hobby, that I would be thrilled beyond belief to own just a single non-Batman page. Yours is not only complete, but has its cover, and is about as sharp as any collector could ever hope for. This to me is an example of restoration gone very VERY well. It also presents so well within the CGC slab; you must be one proud owner. I don't want to sound overly cheesy, but could you describe for those of us who have yet to (and might never) own a Tec #27, what the feeling must be like to finally have the privilege to own a book of that magnitude? Sorry, but cheesy is what you'll get -- how about owning a book you want to just look at and hold anytime you are within 100 yards of where it lies ?? How about picking it up in the holder so gently as if you were picking up the actual book, not wanting to damage it, what about wanting to sleep with it under your pillow every damn night an.................OK, sorry, too much information. Fishbone - I wonder did Gator supply you with a qualified bid as to the pre restoe grade on this gem? Not that it matters, this book being as huge and mindblowing as it is - but I just thought about it. In hand how do you see the the book before the work was performed: 3.0ish, 4.0ish?? And why did it get extensive? How large is the pieces added? (I guess thats the center question). I find it interesting to shed some light on what distinguishes mod from ext. If it was Matt who did the book. Did he believe it would come out moderate? There must be a lot of thinking and pondering on what to go for when such a book is on ones radar? Congrats - super book
  17. what's the grade? Wow! Nice book Comics N-erb wow - what a #31 copy. Restored? (slight/mod/franken?) Grade? Story on acquisition? I picked up this book from a old friend for some cash and trade. We were both happy at the end. The book is moderate in resto. Tear seals to the cover but no pieces/chunks added to cover! Pieces were added to back and spine area. Paper is cream to white. Book is graded by.......some company.......other than CGC........as a 6.0 which I actually agree with. Very nice looking book! Happy to call it mine! Beatyfull book. By the way: Happy to see a mega 'pre robin tec' encapsulated in a non-cgc holder. I have just never fancied monopoly in any form it comes.

  19. It very much counts. Thanks for sharing; this thread needed it. (thumbs u *** WHAT HE SAID *** Bat-Hound - whats the story behind your #27 ?? Quite a feat to able to add a T27 into the collection

  21. Disappointing census - No 27 .... We NEED a #27 to be flashed in this thread. It deserves it. There must be a boardie volunteering to showcase his #27 book here. C'mon ... we deserve it, - the thread and the posters deserve it. But then again what do I know ...
  22. Maybe it's the summer blues. I am beginning to think its the economy, food/mortgage/healthcare/insurance/gas vs. slabbed comic? Easy choice: ... slabbed comics off course fixed that for ya' (thumbs u
  23. Tell me about it. I know that feeling all too well ... But on a side note: what is iceman hoping to achieve hurling snow balls towards Magneto's magnetic protection field? Go figure ...
