C'mon, calculators where the stuff of sci-fi in 1972. I didn't get my red led digital watch and first calulcator until 1975. The first one we had was about 3" x 5" x 1.5" and all it would do was add, subtract, multiply, and divide. DG

The ones with the $1.50 cover price are MUCH harder to find. They were reprints of the stories published in the $1.95 comics. They had much lower print runs. I just scanned my two HC collections yesterday. Best of the Nintendo Comics System (Mallard Press Hardcover) Best of the Super Mario Bros (Mallard Press Hardcover) Mine are from Mallard Press. There exist versions that weren't done by Mallard. DG

Although it's been a low priority, I've been trying to compile a list of all the Eclipse hardcovers. Scans would be great to see. DG

Wow -- the elephant almost looks like Doctor Seuss! Jack Dr. Suess did advertising art in the 1920's a political cartoons during WWII. It is possible. DG

I partially opened my Italian Alpha/Omega poster and laid it on my scanner. Here is what a little less than 1/3rd of it looks like. It comes with the comic above. I was supplied with an extra poster when I bought the comic/poster combination. DG

Ashcans weren't really being produced in 1983, so that would be an oddity. Maybe it was something produced for a DVD release? I have an Ashcan sized "Land of the Giants" #1 that has the Gold Key logo and everything. It was produced for a DVD. DG I passed on it but I will pick it up during the Christmas break. I still can't find any info on it anywhere. Do you have a scan or something? I wasn't even aware an ashcan existed. No. It was a typical ashcan. IIRC the cover was on yellow stock. Black only printing, not color. It wasn't typical for 1982 & 1983. It could have been created to promote Pacific at conventions. If your discovery is true, collectors would have viewed it as something easy to bootleg/fake and not had a lot of confidence in it as a collectible. DG I'll post scans of it when I pick it up in a few weeks. My Christmas break started this past weekend, so I'm still looking forward to seeing the scan of this. I like rarities and oddities. DG

Newsstand issues are rarer because unsold copies are returned and destroyed. The ones that don't get bought within the first few hours started looking rough with spine creases as people flip through them on spinner racks. Newsstand comics dropped in sales when the direct market was born. Publisher made more money when the product wasn't returnable, so they quit promoting newsstand sales. DG With Borders closing shop they might just be that much harder to find nowadays as well given that was a big national chain that had rack comics....although maybe not if the "rare" seekers are now searching out newstand copies on the day of delivery. 10 years ago folks weren't really thinking about it much. With comics costing so much, I don't think many buyers of modern comics are looking to add newsstand variants to their collection. If there are any differences, I'd expect them to be very rare in the future. I'm not a fan of modern comics, so I can't bring myself to buy any. If there was a modern comic I wanted, I might look for the newsstand version. DG

My new scanner doesn't give good results for CGC comic scans, but I'm happy with it for everything else. Don't get a "Mustek A3 USB 2400 Pro" if you want to scan CGC graded comics. If you want to scan Treasury Comics or anything flat up to 11" x 16.5", it's great. DG

Any chance that some are Canadian? or sold on military bases? DG

As long as you realize the real newsstand version has the bar code. Diamond didn't distribute and with a bar code. DG

Hexenmeister, Hopefully this won't frustrate you further, but you don't have the "real' newsstand version of the first printing with the bar code. Ironically I had a 5 pack sitting on my printer because I've been meaning to scan it for the past month. DG

I don't think the "JC Penney" variants were exclusive to J.C. Penney. I picked up a pack at a local comic shop one year. They came shrunk wrapped together when I bought them. I got the older X-Men titles.. #62 I think... maybe a #28. DG
