  1. I'd never considered it that way, but yeah, it's crazy how much a book can be devalued for even a tiny bit of CT. I hate that minor CT can devalue a book almost as much as trimming. Seems like those two types of restoration are miles apart, but that PLOD doesn't offer much distinction. I know, the resto is described on the label, but it doesn't matter. That PLOD is the kiss of death for some collectors.
  2. It's my impression that the other areas they found are very small and on the spine and it's not that they missed them per se but that the book fell somewhere in between a C-1 and a C-2. Since the removal of the more obvious CT, they're going to see if it leans C-1. It sounds a bit wonky, and I do think they either missed the CT the first time or didn't adequately notate it on the grader's notes. And they are going to run it by CCS as well to see what can be done there. Not a great situation for me as a collector, but they're trying to make things right.
  3. I know you don't want to, but please contact CGC. I'm sure they would want to know so they can address the weak link in their grading chain. I paid thousands for a book that was C-1 (minor color touch). I had the CT removed, sent it in for regrading and it came back C-2 (grader's notes now say THREE more areas of CT). I contacted them and said that I wouldn't have bought the book if it was C-2. (The original grader's notes didn't list the other areas of CT). They botched it. Not sure what they'll do. They're intimating that they'll take it back to C-1, since the other areas are small. They sent me a mailing label, info to send it back as a mechanical error. They're also running it by Matt Nelson. They're trying to make it right.
  4. RIP. He was a creator, an editor, a teacher--a giant. I have a few books that he signed (on the inside cover, old-school). I treasure those.
  5. I don't think he'd take it that way if it was presented constructively. I've bought from CC for years. The one time I had a problem Vinny fixed it that day. Transferred money directly to my bank account and then followed up the next day to make sure I was good. I was impressed.
  6. I can't believe they went ahead and slabbed that book, as if you wouldn't notice? I've had CCS reject books, for fear of popping staples, weakening spines, so they're not a factory that just smashes everything...but...yikes.
  7. I did. He reached out to me and wanted to buy my Hulk 181. He made an offer that was at the top of GPA pricing, but his screen name seemed familiar. I jumped on the boards, found this thread and wrote back to him. I told him it looked like he was buying slabbed comics, unslabbing them, then reselling at inflated grades and I didn't want to be a part of that. I even gave him a link to this discussion. He never responded.
  8. I have recently. Removed a tiny bit of water-soluble paint from the cover. It was C-1. Sent it in for regrading. They found three more areas, C-2. I would avoid removing it and attempting a regrade if their grading of purple books is that wonky.
  9. Really great guy. Gave me advice when I bought (and slabbed) a bunch of Zap, FFFB, and Air Pirate Funnies. Is it true that CBCS doesn't grade underground comics?
  10. I just got off the phone with PayPal customer service. They were great. They looked up the tracking info, saw that it had been delivered, and put the money back in my account. It's my understanding that their resolution center is automated, so when you file a claim, it's a program, not a human, delivering the verdict. Which is bound to be a hot mess.
  11. I did. He's saying it never showed up. USPS shows it was delivered. I don't know how this one went in his favor.
  12. That's exactly what happened. It was a $400 book. I'd heard of this happening to other people. First time it's happened to me.
  13. It had to be a Walkthrough the first time. Its value is higher than the other categories.
  14. Add fantasticbeast47 to the list of scammers. He bought a comic. Tracking showed that he received it. He filed a PayPal claim that he didn't get it. I google his mailing address and it comes up in Amazon seller threads as someone running an "empty box" scam. I present that info to PayPal. Along with delivery confirmation. They rule in favor of...the scammer.
  15. Is there a reason why people don't use Bestine for tape removal? I've use it to remove tape, stickers, spray mount, anything that's applied with adhesive for years. It's what's used in art schools. I haven't used it on comics though.
  16. I remember that JIM 83. I still don't understand that one. I know they process a TON of books. Mistakes will be made. I have books with label errors. But grading errors...that's a whole other kind of problem.
  17. Okay, it came back Purple 5.0. Which it was originally, so at least the numerical grade remained the same. But...now there's restoration that was NOT caught the first time and is not on the old grader's notes. Grader Notes:Color touch (Non-archival material up to 1"" x 1"") Full Left Front Cover C-2 Color touch (Non-archival material up to 1"" x 1"") Full Top Front Cover C-2 Color touch (Non-archival material up to 1"" x 1"") Right Bottom Front Cover C-2 To miss three C-2 areas the first times seems like a horrible job of checking for restoration. If that were on the grader's notes that I read before buying, I never would have bought this book.
  18. Very true. I've dissected several cheap restored books and usually the light table in a dark room will pop any work done. Curious to get this book back and see what's up.
  19. Thanks Joey. I've sent in 800+ books and had never seen that. But that makes sense. I'm still a little puzzled how upon second grading, after resto removal, they're finding more CT. (Going from C1 to C2). So did they miss it the first time? Also baffled because the black light picks up nothing, and I thoroughly looked with the glass and a light table and couldn't find anything.
  20. I picked up a decent value silver age book. It was restored (C-1 minor, color touch) but I examined it with a 10x loupe and it looked like tempera paint. (Like craft paint, which is water soluble). I sent it in to CCS and it got rejected for resto removal. They were worried about loosening the top staple. They even didn't crack it open. I was puzzled by that because the grader's notes already say the top staple is detached, but whatever, perhaps CCS doesn't look at the previous notes and they were erring on the side of caution, which is a good thing. I get the book back, bust it out of the slab, and everything seems fine. The paint flecks off easily, so I touched it with a slightly moist q-tip and it started to come off. I took my time (I'm a graphic designer by background) and gently removed the paint with a few swabs. Then I examined the cover again with the magnifying loupe, used a black light, and could not find any other restoration. I send it back. It got walk-thru graded today and came back UNIVERSAL (Blue) Yay! Then an hour later it was C-1 Another hour later it was C-2 I'm still waiting on the grade, assuming I'll know tomorrow. Also, hoping they don't mysteriously find more restoration, but I'm really confused by the gradual degrading of this book. And ultimately, finding more restoration than was there originally, especially after I easily removed what was there from the initial grader's notes. Thoughts? Call/email and ask for more info? Ask them to send it to CCS and see if they can remove whatever else there is? Burn it in a fit of frustration and eat the ashes?
  21. He is now. Who would have thought someone reported for not paying would keep buying?
