Captain America Comics from 1941 is a very valuable comic. A complete copy with its cover would sell for tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands depending on condition. A copy in the condition you describe would still be valuable and very sought after. People even collect single pages from that book.

Is this a comic that has not previously been certified as CGC Signature Series? If that’s the case, then the signature is not relevant to the grading tier. Just submit it as he would submit any other comic. CGC will treat it as a comic that has a writing on the cover, because that’s what it is.

Hi. I did a CPR on an ASM #50 8.5 W hoping to get an 9.0 W.
This backfired and I got an 8.5 OW/W. I know it was gamble.
Given white pages are a premium on silver age books, I'm tempted to resubmit and maybe get a 8.5 W back.
Q. Is there any way to contest not a grade but page quality going down on a book (I still have the original label and pic of the book before) ?
I'm assuming not possible. I figure a screening at ccs would not help either since that is just for Pressing purposes.
This happened to me on two huge keys also. The grade went way up but the page quality went from W to OW/W.
For those I won't risk resubmiting them just frustrating haha
First off, I'm sorry for your loss.
If I were CGC, I'd consider the prior grade, including page color, to be completely irrelevant. The old label shows the grade including PQ, in the opinion of the graders, back when it was originally graded.
When it was re-evaluated, the graders deemed it to be a different PQ. There are two possibilities here:
- The pages haven't changed at all, and the more recent graders had a different opinion.
- The pages have aged and have lost some of their whiteness since the original grading.
CGC does not, and should never, take into account a prior grade when re-grading a book, because a grade can and most likely will change over time. Even under the best of conditions, the pages will eventually get browner. Under less-than-perfect conditions, the book can be damaged (shaken comic syndrome, for example) and the book can age poorly in its slab (especially with exposure to light, heat and/or moisture). So a prior grade should never matter on a regrade.

Doesn’t even have to be fading from the sun.
True. I once faded some books pretty badly by keeping them in a lighted display case.

I can't figure out why the last couple rows of the table above keep coming out askew. Something's wonky, and I've tried fixing it a few times without success.
Well, here goes the list of as-yet-unidentified works. This includes the works posted at ImageDuplicator that seemed to me to be comics or comic related. It does not include any of the nudes or works that seemed to me to be unrelated to comics.
Ok, comics sleuths... how many of these can you find?
Fingers crossed that the last couple rows of this table display correctly...

I went to the ImageDuplicator site and noted Lichtenstein's works that seem to have a comics source, along with any attribution that the site provides for the sources.
Then I spent a bunch of time with David Barsalou's amazing "Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein", adding artist attribution where he's found it.
Then I went through this thread and did some Googling to try to fill in some gaps. What I have is a list of Lichtenstein works, artists, and sources.
Whew. I have a bunch of information in Excel, and have struggled with a way to present it here that is legible. I went with having the Excel create an HTML table. I think that works well, but I'm open to suggestions if you know of a better way to get data like this displayed.
First off, here are ones that I could find that have been identified.
Each row represents a painting or other work by Lichtenstein, except in the cases where multiple rows are needed because the painting had multiple sources. I included most of the attributions I found, even if the attribution seemed to be incorrect. When I seemed to be incorrect, I noted it as such in the "notes" column.
I would have loved to include images of all of the works noted here. However, I've read that the Lichtenstein estate works hard to prevent such use of Lichtenstein's work (even when it's a work that he copied from somebody else), so I'm just putting URLs here where you can find those images if you wish.
Fingers crossed that the last couple rows display correctly this time. I've tried several things, but each time the last couple rows are out of whack.- szucchini, GACollectibles, Juno Beach and 3 others

Wasn't aware that the label would call it graffiti. Doesn't the label say something like: "John Byrne written on cover."
That has been my experience as well. I have never seen CGC use the term “graffiti” for a signature. They have used something along the lines of “(name) written on cover” for all of the ones I have seen. Here’s an example.
-
As for your question about how CGC confirms that it was signed at one of their events, it all has to do with a chain of custody. If you have it signed at a CGC event, then CGC retains the book immediately after the signing, and encapsulates it. Then they send it back to you with certification. If at any point you remove the book from his holder, then it is no longer certified, and can never be recertified by CGC. Does that help?
-
CGC certifies only signatures that they witnessed, with one tiny exception. In some circumstances, they also certify signatures they received directly from the creator who signed it. That’s it. If you have a comic with a name written on it, CGC could give it a qualified grade, or they could deduct from the grade because of the writing. Under no circumstances, would they validate a signature on a book that you have. That is not one of the services they offer.

I've looked through scores of ACMP coded crime books, and haven't located that story. Are you SURE it had that early code seal?
I'm sure Wertham said it had that early code seal. But Wertham said a lot of things.

This is a Hulk 315. I couldnt match up signature with any of the credits.
Dennis O'Neil , Don Daley ; Jim Shooter , John Byrne; Keith Williams, Andy Yanchus, Rick Parker
Anyone?
I'm no expert, but I'd say it's the inker Keith Williams. Here's a signature borrowed from an online source.

SOTIcollector, you've referred to the subject book as "Comic Capers", but yet the title seems to read, "Comic Crimes"...What am I missing here?
AFA the story of the guy faking to get out of the military, I've read that story and may have the book, I'll have to look. If so, maybe we can do a trade.
Ummm.... that was a test to see if you were paying attention? Actually, I used two different names for the book, and they were both wrong. I have now corrected that. Thanks for catching my goof, and for being so kind about it.
I have a ton of goodies for trade, so I'd be happy to trade for or buy that draft dodger story from you.

Congrats on the pick up!
I'm curious, did you already have Dynamic #17 and wanted the Canadian version also?
Yes, that’s exactly it. I completed the collection of all known SOTI books, and now I’m hunting down items I think of as indirect SOTI stuff. Technically speaking, Dynamic #17 isn't even a SOTI book because Wertham saw the red hot poker story when it was printed in Crime Reporter #2. So I consider Dynamic 17 and Comic Crimes to be SOTI-related, but strictly speaking not SOTI books.
Some other SOTI-related books I've been hunting down include:
- Pre-code non-US versions SOTI books (Captain Video #2 UK version, True Crime #2 Canadian version, Wanted #12 Canadian version)
- Collections of retail return books (Fox Giant, EC Annual, XMas Comics and so on) that contain SOTI books.
- Relatives of SOTI books, such as the Avon paperback that gave Reform School Girl her cover, and Peter Penny merchandise.
I'm also still trying to hunt down SOTI books that haven’t yet been identified, like this one:
In one which has the "Seal of Approval of Comics Magazine Publishers" [referring to the ACMP code, not the Comics Code] young men fake disease to get out of the army. Coming out, as it did, during the Korean War, this lesson was directly useful to upper teen-agers and indirectly to schoolboys.
"Didn't I bluff my way out of the army?" says the hero-criminal. "Got a medical discharge without having anything wrong except indigestion! If you work it right, no doctor in the world can prove you're bluffing!"- KCOComics, Paul © ® ⚽️💙™, Point Five and 1 other

I’ve focused on collecting SOTI books for a couple decades, so it’s getting harder to find SOTI books I don’t already have. So it’s always a thrill to add a new SOTI book to the collection.
I present to you, Comic Crimes, featuring the “red hot poker” story that Wertham loved to hate. Thanks to @rjpb ‘s sales thread, this is my newest SOTI collectible. It is a Canadian version of a Dynamic #17.

@ThatNerdyCanuck Feel free to reach out if you'd like assistance with any documentation for SOTI books. I'll be happy to provide a photo of the appropriate page of SOTI for you, if that helps.

Thanks for posting. It's always a good to ask the experts when you're a newbie.
There is definitely value to some coverless comics. A coverless comic might sell for anywhere from 10% to 50% of a complete, well-worn comic, depending on how high demand it is.
The comics you have pictured are Superman Annual #4, Raggedy Ann and Andy #2, a reprint of Amazing Spider-man #7 (the comic is Marvel Tales #4), a reprint of Amazing Spider-man #6 (which most likely came from Marvel Tales #3), and Amazing Spider-man Annual #4. As @Kneel Before Dox pointed out, the fact that it says "originally presented in" is your first clue to the fact that it's a reprint and not an original.
It's unlikely these would sell for a lot without covers. If you want to be sure, offer them on eBay and see how high the auction goes.

Experience of a newly minted CGC subscriber and a couple of questions for CGC.
in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Posted
Others are probably better qualified to answer the questions you ask. I do feel the urge to chime in and say that this is the most impressive "newbie" post I think I've ever seen. There are many posts from people who say they are newbies and who ask questions that could easily be answered with a simple Google search. You have done far, far more research than any other newbie post I can recall. Well done!
